QUOTE(Lolicon_of_Sin @ Jan 18 2014, 02:14) So, I hear everywhere that FFVI is considered to be either the best or second best game in the series. I'm playing it right now, I'm about 12 hours in, and I'm really wondering, if it's so fun, where's the fun going to start? Thus far I would consider it to be the one of the blandest and glitchiest ones, having incredibly poor character development, and a rather odd balancing of the battle system with really boring fights as a result.
Really I'm hoping it's actually going to become good at one point or another. I'm preparing for major disappointment.
The second half is a bit better, but not too much. I'm not giving you spoilers, but you'll know when you get there. I also played it for the first time not too long ago and didn't find it that great, either.

Those people are speaking with nostalgic influence. People say/do the same thing with every Final Fantasy. Someone will say a certain older FF was the best and someone else, who's first FF was one of the newer ones will go back and play the older one and be like '...this is whack.' TL;DR: It was before your time. This post has been edited by Marien : Jan 18 2014, 07:47

I've played almost all others in the series, all of them in '12-'13, so no nostalgia goggles for me, and I can comfortably say that V, VII and IX were the best. Those games were the shit. V for the gameplay, and the latter two because they damn near brought tears to my eyes. And the only one I can possibly have some bias for is VII because that was my first. II and VIII however were abysmal. I really can't say VI is among them, either. Its just really overrated and therefore a bit disappointing, I suppose.

I played almost every ff game except VI, VII,VIII,IX,XI,XIV. I found FFV and FFXIII the worst ff games ever to me. If XIII didn't exist. I would say FFV is the worst I've seen. I wasn't into it.

If you're only in it for the story, yeah V sucks balls. But clearly they weren't trying to make the story the shiny part either. I absolutely adored that job system. So fun and rewarding.

Dang everyone keeps telling me that. I'll make that my next then... EDIT: and plus, I really liked those fire emblem games too. It seems kind of a similar thing. This post has been edited by Lolicon_of_Sin: Jan 18 2014, 09:18

Final Fantasy Tactics is amazing. That's a FF I'd argue as one of, if not THE best in the series. It had everything. Great story, gameplay, music, characters and 'cute' graphics and sound effects. It's a 'real' timeless game, like Chrono Trigger. Just doesn't get old. Not even Pillowstank could hate on it.

If you're playing the smartphone/tablet version then you're going to hate it. It was dumbed down for the non gamers, the original FFVI had a game mechanic in which the monster that attacked you had at least 5 levels above yours, the encounter rate also increased the longer you stayed in one area, there where also "unbeatable" monsters it also had several hidden items/equipment /espers even another character to play with. The story is amazing (not as rich as the ones in the new games but decent for it's snes time) the coliseum was a favorite mini game of mine. Regarding tactics, yeah it's above many tactics games for the introduction of the terrain in battle mechanic the cards, laws and judges mechanic takes some time to get used to but increases the game difficulty - which is nice in the long run - As a personal opinion I like the tactics ogre games better. (Tactics Ogre: Knight of Lodis for GBA or Ogre Tactics: March of the Dark Queen for snes, for example) This post has been edited by Azraelgt: Jan 18 2014, 20:27

I never understood why people are so adamant about VI being great either, always found it rather dull. Then again, I'm one of those weird people who actually like VIII, so there's that.

Wise words LoS, wise words. At least finish the game. The story alone is worth the time. See if your emulator can run Super Mario RPG, best SNES rom I've played. This post has been edited by Azraelgt: Jan 18 2014, 23:30

The only good fantashits are the one with Cecil on SNES and FF9 on PS1.
Anything after 9 is lazy-story-transgender-emo crap.
I've been playing Chrono Trigger lately and i've just got to defeat Lavos, the final boss. It was actually pretty boring playing it again. Tried playing Chrono Cross for PS1 but it's kinda meh. I'd rather play Vagrant Story or Legend of Mana when i finish my other games.
Also i've been playing the 3 GBA Fire Emblem but stopped after 6 stages or so when the fucking enemies kept oneshotting my units and i missed a couple of recruitment chances. So instead of starting over i said fuck it. I think this was why i dropped the game when it was new as well. It doesn't help that dead units die permanently or that when someone levels up, their stats randomly increase probably gimping your unit over time...
Tried fantashit tactics advance for GBA and it's suuuuper slow, the battles actually piss me off.
I finally found a good GBA tactical game called Rebelstar - Tactical Command. It's an X-COM clone made by the original creator, pretty good so far.
And on the PS1 i'm currently playing Front Mission 3 which is a great military mecha game as far as customization goes.

That's one of the reasons i don't like Fire Emblem, the dying units adds a depth to the game that very few have, but since the enemies units are so strong it becomes frustrating instead of challenging, it would be a nice balance if the user could assign the stats. have you played the Advance Wars games?

I keep trying to like DOA5 but I can't do it no matter how much I play it. I'm as down as the next guy for some of the outfits and vato bayman in a white shirt chokin' fools out but that's it. I feel shades of Skullgirls when I play DOA and by that I mean a game I can enjoy visually but not actually enjoy playing.
The game comes across as a really fucking bad Virtua Fighter and moves just as fluently. I mean yeah some critical burst combos are fun and the hit stop makes them feel meaty but that doesn't everything else from being not enjoyable. I don't know how to quantify in words DOA feeling stiff and unresponsive as fuck but it's like a SF4 player trying to play SF2. you'd question why there is no dashing forward or backward, WTF is up with the walk speeds and why in the fuck inputs are this bad. (in DOAs defense the inputs work as well as anything and combos are not hard, I mean at all but I'd rather play Tekken, SC, or VF)
