As for creativity, well....Creating monsters after existing characters or users is not particularly creative for choosing names, yet if you look at high-level monster list it is apparent it is the most popular way of naming. One could argue that choosing a character to name after is more creative than creating something named "Named Humanoid", though. Anyway, the problem is not recent.
