(Adding an apology here: I'm sorry this is getting so stupidly long. I'll just shut up about it after this post.)

Right... just in case you were serious, the fact that these are called TV shows doesn't mean the TV is necessary for them to exist. It's just a name.
And there's a lot more ways to get around the ads. I think I turned some of them on years ago, I don't remember how, but I'm not seeing any ads with my shows, wherever I watch them. Usually streamed from my NAS. That might explain it (IMG:[

I was trying to point out that it's kind of weird to say you haven't watched TV when you do watch TV shows. Seemingly there's animosity toward the television set itself, which just seems odd to me. Anyway, I'm not sure what else we would call an episodic form of visual entertainment, but if it's on the Internet then maybe TV show isn't accurate. We need an alternative name, I guess.
Also, I don't know what an NAS is.

Yes, indeed. How exactly do you think you're countering his point?
Wait, it is? Oh dear, I completely forgot about that... y'see, I have this [

handy addon installed on my browser for a very long time now...
I was being a smart-ass, so I guess I had that coming.
I know about ad-blockers. They do nothing to stop ads playing during a video or before it starts, which a lot of sites are doing. If you know of a reliable site that never does that, please share it with me, because I haven't seen one.
There seem to be some Flash/Flow player ads that display despite having ad blocking enabled as well. For me, anyway. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

You can't install ad blockers on your tv.
DVR, and hit the >> button a few times. Also, my whole spiel about HBO.

I don't mind ads at all. They keep me from having to pay for most stuff and the site still makes money to operate. The only time I get annoyed with them is when it's the same ad over and over again.
Overall, I prefer ads to paying. Take this site for instance. There aren't nearly enough donations to cover its expenses.
Now, this is a good point. In most cases, I agree with you. I turn my ad-block off for all my favorite sites and webcomics. Aside from wanting to support them for free, their ads are typically easy to ignore, or at least not annoying.
Advertising on TV is a much bigger issue, both for the repetitive nature of ads and the sheer stupidity involved in their creation. This would be an easy argument in favor of using the Internet instead, but as I've been trying to say, a lot of Internet sites that offer video content (by a lot, I mean the actual copyright holders typically) will either make an image ad pop-in to cover the lower part of the video, or worse yet play a video ad first, only allowing you to watch the video you wanted after the ad is over. It's a cumulative waste of time and usually more repetitive and annoying even that TV ads.
Edit:
I realize there are alternatives to the standard network-owned sites, which will offer a lack of advertising breaks. The trouble is that those will either be pay sites, or will be free but are offering no compensation to the people who produced the shows they're giving you. So, it's a little problematic. I envision a lovely future where shows could be shared for free without any legal or moral problem because the people making the shows have all the compensation they need, but we're a long way from getting there. For now, producers want money. Big money.
