...Not quite the essence of my musing - but you do have a point as English is ascendant right now as a global language, and has become a lingua franca of sorts - much like how French was in the past.
Coalescing around a single existing language as an international standard is indeed also a way of achieving a "universal" language/common tongue, though I'm rather averse to that option as it encourages loss of one's native language -
I personally see beauty in the multiplicity of languages.
There are expressions, concepts, and emotions - for example - that simply have no easy translation or counterpart in English, regrettably.
