Nitro-9 from Doctor Who was likely named after Kurt Vonnegut's Ice-9 since the second plot arc in the New Adventures is called Cat's Cradle.
Cat's Cradle is my favourite Kurt Vonnegut book, and one of my favourite books ever.
It starts off kind of slow, but it does a fantastic job building a sense of dread/apprehension (you know it's going to go wrong, you're just waiting for it) and does a great job describing human foolishness as well.
It's the only book I can remember having a nightmare about. And that nightmare did involve his depiction of ice-9 contacting a body of water.
Bokononism is also great. It's the most self-aware religion ever. And as Terry Pratchett put it, people need to believe the little lies so that we can believe the big ones. Bokononism is special in that people are aware it's all lies and yet they believe it anyway. It's like the idea of being crazy to prevent going crazy.
Anyway, the book resonated with me, in a way that I don't know if any other book really has. In my opinion, it, rather than Slaughterhouse Five (which is a good book, too), is his masterpiece.
