The Brave One (2007)
Having since seen the original Death Wish (1974), I can say with a fair degree of confidence that The Brave One draws clear inspiration from the former - to the point of returning to some of the same spots, with similar cinematography/camera angles and general ambience.
It is interesting to note the differences as much as the similarities between the vision of an unsafe NYC depicted in Death Wish vs. The Brave One, separated by a number of decades. In both cases, any lingering attachment to the city is shattered and forces dramatic character shifts. The Brave One is able to use the protagonist's career as a way to vocalize some of the changes in viewpoint in realtime, as it were.
I still prefer Death Wish overall, and for other films in the same vein I also quite prefer Ms .45 (1981) over The Brave One (the latter two both featuring a female protagonist who acts as the vigilante).
