Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Day of the Dead (1985)
Land of the Dead (2005)
Diary of the Dead (2007)
Survival of the Dead (2009)
Working my way through Romero's classic and modern trio of films, I was most struck by elements of Day of the Dead. The pervasive hopelessness, isolation, and loss of social cohesion in particular stood out - aided by the actors' performances. In general across all of Romero's titles, I found the "zombies" are a directorial tool that helps shape the script and characters, rather than a focal point for mere shock factor. Very refreshing.
I prefer the older three films, though do feel Land of the Dead deserves special mention and is not to be discounted lightly.
