I went to go see Kingsman: The Secret Service on Monday. I'll admit that I went in with pretty low expectations-- I saw a trailer for it a whole ago (jeez, I don't even remember when I first saw the trailer) and I wasn't all that impressed. I was expecting something like an Alex Rider ripoff. Fortunately, what I got was nothing like the sort. It was more like a James Bond spoof, but not overly silly-- this was a movie that was aware that it was ridiculous, and took that fact in and of itself very seriously. What I'm trying to say is that this was kind of a dumb film, but just because it was dumb doesn't also mean it wasn't equal or greater amounts of awesome. I had a good time when I was sitting in my theater chair noshing on Milk Duds. The plot was amusing, the action scenes were fantastic, and there was humor enough to keep the whole thing running nicely alongside the drama without one or the other feeling like it was heaped on too heavily.
Should you go and watch Kingsman? Yeah, I think so. It's worth the price of a theater ticket. Go see it with friends, though. I can imagine that this is a movie that grows exponentially more fun the more friends you watch it with.
I concur. I think they had a little too much fun playing moments of horror for comedy when making it. Especially with the use of Pomp and Circumstance with fireworks.
As far as criticisms go, the worst I have is about Samuel L. Jackson - I think the lisp he affected added nothing to the film, but he wasn't difficult to understand the way some of the slang was at times.
If you want to kill time watching a movie, this is a good choice. On the other hand, if you had trouble understanding Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises," you might find it productive to wait for a version with subtitles, just for the denser bits of slang, and possibly the worst moments of lisping.
