Godzilla 2014. Not enough Godzilla for an origin film, it was more about other damn monsters that he fights that you don't care about since you're only waiting for them to die. Pretty boring designs for his foes, also.

I thought it was pretty good. It was a different take for sure and that may put off people who have more experience with the series than I do.
I remember reading an article in the WSJ about how the director(writer?) wanted to portray the monsters this time around. He felt that the monsters were an embodiment of the fears or threats of the times the movies were made in. Nuclear warfare in the original and god only knows for Godzilla Jr.
I feel that he's pretty spot on with that which is a good indicator of why the 1999 movie failed. It was just some generic monster and there was nothing to it, it didn't feel like anything special. In this one he said he felt he had to portray Godzilla in a way that captured the essence of recent natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina and the Tōhoku earthquake. Something that was entirely out of our control and we just had to bunker down and wait it out. I feel he did a really good job of that but I agree, needs more monster screen time.
