QUOTE(Red_Piotrus @ Apr 8 2011, 11:08) Is there any translation discussion thread not in the Cove? If so, I missed it.
It wasn't here. It was someone taking a potshot at me on a translator's website. Funny thing is, the guy commissioned the translator to re-translate the doujinshi I did and him being pissed by my translation was pretty much his reasoning for doing so. Needless to say, the translator most likely just took the money and laughed at the idiot in quiet for shoving money up his ass to redo something that didn't need to be redone in the first place (in my humble opinion). I can understand it in some cases where the translator pulled some poor shit on something and people aren't satisfied with the result, but this? Fucking hilarious. QUOTE(Red_Piotrus @ Apr 8 2011, 11:08) But professional translators can get a lot of crap thrown their way, or at least cause major discussions. Some time ago in my country a translator localized LOTR, changing all names - from Bliblo through Shire to hobbit - to our local equivalents. Trust me, this did not go down quietly...
Ouch, I can imagine... Names are a toughie. I'd leave those alone for the most part... LOTR was localized pretty well in that regard, though some names, especially of locations, had to be changed because they were written with English speakers in mind anyway... but that's just a tiny portion, changing all names is over the top lol.

Given the same situation, I'd have took the money and laughed too. Maybe facepalmed first though. It can't be helped though. Seems some people just have to have their translations strictly "by the books". But anyway, you translators sure do have it rough.

QUOTE(vlad @ Apr 8 2011, 16:49) A wild guess is that with EH gaining popularity as a place to release translations, more people see an opportunity to enlarge their e-penis by "translating" stuff. Back in the good old days when you just dumped your stuff on 4chan there wasn't much of a incentive for people to read moonrunes for the e-penis since all the crap you'd (rightfully) get for tripfagging would offset the e-penis enlargement you'd get for having a name associated with a half assed translation. I'm not sure what e-hentai popularity has to do with it, but I find it plausible that in the past most people who read the translated manga had enough knowledge of kanji to be able to detect bad translations, and today the majority of readers have no idea at all about Japanese, and often about English dialects as well, so it's easy to get praise for a bad translation, and no incentive to keep up any standards. QUOTE(Red_Piotrus @ Apr 8 2011, 18:08) But professional translators can get a lot of crap thrown their way, or at least cause major discussions. Some time ago in my country a translator localized LOTR, changing all names - from Bilbo through Shire to hobbit - to our local equivalents. Trust me, this did not go down quietly... Well, that's because there already existed a translation of it, made by another professional translator years ago, and that previous translator was in correspondence with Tolkien and got direction as to pecific translation details from him. If this was the first translation, it might have gone unnoticed, but people would probably think LOTR a mediocre book and wonder what the fuss is all about.

When it comes to novels, sometimes I wish they'd give the characters a new name AND in square brackets provide the original name immediately following. This would have made it much easier for my coworker, whom I loaned by copy of Battle Royale to and promptly had it returned in less than a week because he could not identify anyone by their names. Thou he absolutely love the film adaption.

I'd never thought how much of a turn-down bad translations could be....

QUOTE(Anon M @ May 9 2011, 23:01) Just wondering if anyone ever took the time to fix up the grammar and re-edit the doujin mentioned in the first post of this thread lol? (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/mellow.gif) If not I may do it, if I get bored sometime. (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I think someone needs to. I have a couple more of my own stuff that needs a re-edit(I seriously don't now what the hell I was thinking at the time), but if you pass it up, i'll take it. Not to mention the dozens(?) of others that could use it(but that's another story) This post has been edited by Super Shanko: May 10 2011, 08:54

I took a look at the galleries and couldn't find another english version of it so I'll work on it. (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) It definitely needs some work, it's painful to read it as is lol. (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

QUOTE Good job Thanks (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) QUOTE Then I guess i'll do that Shinigami Onsen one(the one with the bad engrish) You mind posting a link to it? I just want to take a look at the original. Also if anyone could post links to doujins which need some work, like the one I worked on, that way it would be easier to find them and help the poor needy one's lol. QUOTE Here(but it was taken into the shadows) That's all I needed to know. (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) It's gonna be tough to make make that one sound better when read, there's quite a few grammar mistakes, but the whole translation seems like it just doesn't flow as it should. Looking forward to seeing the result after your done with it. (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Once I have the script down, the edit shouldn't take long.

Ok.... I finished Shinigami Onsen, but (unfortunately) while doing so I came to realize the translator/editor isn't all that good(or mentally unhinged) since there were some obvious errors(which make me question the whole doujin) Long story short, there were a some mistakes on it that look like they'll need a quick trans so I can post this(or just continue to edit based off the original) Page 10: Page 18: Page 28: Page 37:

First: Uuh, why?
Second: A bit hard without context. Basically expressing irritation about someone laughing (maybe laughing something off). So depending on what it was, there are a number of possibilities.
Third: Seems to be something series-specific. What is it from? The gist of it is that it's some sort of training facility under some hills or something...
Fourth: I had my first time with a cat...
A cat made me cum...
I... I'm... (expressing disbelief, but he doesn't even really start the sentence)
