The new Monster Lab is spamming out monsters by the bucket. It is fun, and can add significant value to the game - but it can also create annoying spam'a'monster garbage. Sure, there are (fortunately) limits on that (Chaos Tokens being rare), but it *may* be a problem. And even if the spam scenario won't come true, there is still a question about what constitutes an acceptable name.

Ten is currently screening the monsters and deleting what he doesn't like, but he may chose to delegate this to us (like he did with gallery vigilance). If it comes to that, it would be nice to have some idea of how we will handle the situation.

His current guidelines are:

Don't create monsters that are obviously based on people on the forums without their permission. You can, of course, make yourself. Also, don't be retarded.

Looking at current names, most of the names fit a fantasy theme, with some erotic humor, non-hentai Internet humor, and Japanese/anime/sci-fi/member username references in the mix. I'd like for the future hentaiverse monsters to keep to those themes.

Here's my breakdown of monsters and their name origin:
* Amphibious Sperm Whale - erotic humor / fantasy
* Blue Slime - fantasy / hentai
* Cockatrice - erotic humor / fantasy
* Cookie Monster - ?
* Fire Fox - ?
* Giant Panda - ref to EvilPanda? / also hentai / fantasy
* Green Slime - fantasy / hentai
* Mantitcore - erotic humor / fantasy
* Mutant Peacock - erotic humor / fantasy
* Rabid Hamster - ref to blade? / also fantasy
* Scary Ghost - ref to Spectre? / also fantasy
* Tentacle Monster - hentai / fantasy
* Apathetic Canuck - I think it may be a ref to some member...?
* Blue Hedgehog - Sonic ref (game/user?)
* Manthra - ?
* Mind Raper - ero / hentai
* Zombie Cow - Diablo? / fantasy
* Manbearpig - South Park? / fantasy
* White Bunneh - ?
* Mithra - I think this may be some gaming ref, but I cannot trace
* Dalek - sci fi ref

Legandary monsters are named after Japanese/anime characters. Trio bosses are named after folklore/anime characters. Bosses are named after Internet humor.

This gives us some idea what names are acceptable.

I will ask Ten to post here on what he things are acceptable monster names.

Some big questions:
* profanities
* acceptable languages (English, Japanese, anything else?)
* name length
* "feel"

What I don't want to see is monster with typos, monster which use alternate names of a character ("aerith" and "aeris", and so on), and monsters that don't fit the "hentaiverse" theme ("feel"). The latter category is hard to define, but just consider if you'd like to see monster with names based on:
* people's names that have nothing to do with hentai (George W. Bush, Osama bin Laden, Michael Jackson...)
* somebody's favorite music groups, song names, movies
* weapon names (F-16 Falcon, AK-47, so on)
* troll crap like "YOU SUCK" and "I WANT MORE P0RN"
* and probably a bunch of stuff I am missing that would be BAD

Other points:
* should we report monsters for renaming / expunging in a forum thread? Yeah, we have a chat spam-a-new-monster-name thread, but I am talking about something useful that wouldn't be for spamming (here?)
* or will there be a voting system like for galleries?

I'd also suggest that we create a wiki page, where we list acceped monsters, noting their reference. Monsters that cannot be tied to anything, or don't fit an acceptable theme, should be listed (here?) for discussion and expunging.

also, the monsters you tagged as ero: none of them are really ero. only if you want to interpretate them that way! each of them really exists in mythology or reality! (sperm whale, cockatrice, mantitcore, peacock, et c.) so after all, only the mind of the reader makes them really erotic humor, yet they are not really "pornographic", in opposide to a monster named "penis-girl" or something since that would be way more obvious. and also the hentai ones are fairly only "porno" if you interpretate them that way or, in other words, had contact with that kind of material.

regarding this, i guess monsters names should be chosen in a way that a child that never had contact with the internet would not suspect any sexual jokes in them. in other words, monsters should be named so the game can kind of remain safe for work. (okay, the site title itself defies this idea, but the hv-script lets you remove the logo and change the title, so it can really be considered fairly safe for work - except for the special attacks of some monsters!)

I think you are right about all of them; the only thing to trace remains manthra/mithra. I thought one of them was some mmorpg gaming slang related to to males playing female characters... but my google skills fail here, or I am just plain wrong.

I thought there was a wiki page about the references, but it seems it only lists them for artifacts (link). The monster references must be from some forum discussions I cannot trace...

Good point about monsters. I thought Cockatrice was a mispelling, it is in fact the correct one. But Mantitcore is a mispelling of Manticore. And Tentacle Monster is, I think, a very clear hentai reference...

Safe for work is an important concept here; also, most people never heard of the word hentai. Monster attacks where always more daring (check bestiary for a list), but we are not up to that point yet.

Anyway, I think monster names in the ero-humor factor require, how shall I put it... a little more creative than needed for gutter humor?

All existing monsters, I think, have a chance of evoking at least a smirk the first time one sees them. As you point out, Penis-girl is hardly up to that level (unless you are an immature schoolkid, of course - but the very point of the naming rules here would be to ensure this game is fun for everyone, not just a kid punk who laughs at hearing the word "sex").

White Bunneh is from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
Mithras are an all-female race in that MMO Final Fantasy.
Manthra is a term used to describe males who play as Mithras.
The Canuck is a reference to Grahf, IIRC.

Until then, going on a crusade to cull what you deem "unacceptable" is overstepping it. I agree that some of them are stupid as shit, but that's the user's right to be a dumbass just like with their Spirit Attacks.

Spirit Attacks are personal. Monsters are functional already enough to be public, and I want to enjoy my hverse game and kill monsters I appreciate, not some troll spawns or 10-year old idea of what's cool and funny. I am afraid that if we don't take an action quickly, we will see the problem spiraling out of control.

Just thing how the galleries would be without any vigilantes to keep them in order.

Spirit Attacks are personal. It doesn't matter because we can't do anything about it other than sending Tenboro a PM. He's probably already got a plan or two ready to deal with the retards, but hasn't been able to implement it because of time constraints. There are only so many hours in the day and troubleshooting and fixing bugs on a patch that just went live takes a lot of time. The galleries are different because everyone has the power to keep it tidy -- some people are just more invested in it than others.

so maybe we need something like "Monster-Keepers" that have the ability to keep an eye on existing monsters and to delete bad ones? that could reduce tenbs workload quite a bit. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)


yet tenb somewhere mentioned he wanted to do something like "vote-downs" of bad monsters, in other words, maybe there will be a link in the monsters lab to a place where we can enter bad monsters to be voted out? like a big grinder which is standing in the middle of nowhere with lots of seats around and the monster chosen to be expelled hanging above that mixer with a big scissor on the holding rope? with the scissor being connected to some trigger-mechanism that triggers if enough people are sitting on the seats around the grinder? i so could imagine that. ^^

I don't like the vote down idea. If there's some powerful monster someone created, then lots of people would want to vote it down to make lives easier.
Of course, tenb also mentioned that some updates from now, you would want more powerful monsters.

The white bunneh is also referencing bunbun.

You can pass or reject the name, and then the same name gets bounced to another reviewer who does the same. If the reviews agree (pass/pass or fail/fail) it goes through, mixed signals go to tenb for final review.

That could work.

People who consistently vote in a way that Ten's disagree with should lose the reviewer rights.

Already wanting to crack down with an iron fist eh? Seems kinda heavy handed honestly. So what if someone wants to name a monster after something not related to hentai? Maybe people will find a lot of enjoyment out of using their spirit attack against George W Bush? Honestly, this addition of monster creation is just fun/funny to work with. No need to take it so seriously as to just starting all these arbitrary rules.
