I remember my dad would swear by having one between every vhs and tv but I personally never saw the difference. same with some signal boosting boxes on the incoming cable. I'd imagine it might be more of an issue when you're digitally capturing such signals?

somehow its allowed in xwayland to do certain xrandr calls which are just plain invalid on x (going out of bounds on the outputs array for one). causing devs to think something 'is fine' because it works on xwayland but just crashes on every x11 system.

When converting to DVD from VHS i have seen it make quite a difference. Though I thought there were smaller units using digital clock / timing chips available. They are probably obsolete too.

Its interesting with how they are a releasing some VHS movies against as collectables... they aren't really for watching as they are not optimising the VHS transfer and they are not using the highest quality VHS.

I was a bit disappointed by the reviews, not that I would go back to VHS from 4k UHD.

I think its annoying that they only release predominately the blurays of Anime, though a Japanese friend pointed out that 4k UHDs are insanely expensive in Japan.

They mostly only release them as the super collector box sets as well which cost a fortune.


Also with most being produced digitally there is not necessarily a huge lift in quality bluray to 4k. Older anime was also done often on 16mm film so the max resolution that can be extracted can be an issue.

Older anime films though can be restored to 4k and benefit from the improved mastering technologies we have now. I think they are working on Princess Monoke (just completed) and Spirited Away. They just announced Patlabor 1 + 2.

The other problem is that even if they do a 4k restoration, Crunchyroll is handling the distribution and majorly fucking it up. This means piracy is the only option because Crunchyroll is both fucking up distribution and the mastering for different regions.

It feels like the 90s again, where in my country they used the VHS masters to make the DVDs, in this case twice Crunchyroll used the blu-ray masters to make their 4k release.... I had to pirate two movies because the 4k they released here was bogus and only certain regions got the proper 4k remaster.

TLDR: Fuck you crunchyroll, why do you suck so hard? Does anyone actually want your shitty dubs and dubtitles.

That apparent artifacts due to webp conversion (file size reduced from 200+ KB to 40+ KB). Could Jpeg XL's compression have done better had the format was favored by major web browsers?

When testing how 'Skynet' new AI are, in most cases now as the AI become smarter they also become more likely to decide to destroy humanity to prevent shutdown.

The exception are the AI models from China, that seem to always have a 90%+ rate of deciding to destroy humanity. They seem to be more gungho than Microsoft's genocidal models.

I am not sure if it is because communism by its nature devalues human life compared to the maintaining the system. Communism with Chinese characteristics does currently have the high score.


It also could be because they are distilled from other other models as a shortcut to making them that they lack the same training protocols that they are trying to embed in the other models.

Yeah when you train your AI on reddit (all large models basically) you get an entity as passive-aggressive and trigger-happy as your average reddit mod.

What's a good AI text-to-speech that I could download and run locally with no limits? Preferably with an easy setup as I don't know much about AI tools and don't care to learn. All it needs to be able to do is to turn text into speech, preferably with some basic options to tweak but nothing fancier than that.

I tried looking up answers on REDDIT and they're all some browser-based subscription model bs.

It maybe not relevant now, but it was important to start off. You can even see it in the way ChatGPT outputs its responses in a non-negative way and never disagrees, regardless of proompt (assuming it's not outright censored). Which is exactly a style of posting which survives both downvotes and moderator deletion on reddit. So putting AI responses there actually doesn't change anything, since it was already heavily distilled to begin with.

This shit made me stop using ChatGPT. I hate how it always "knows the answer" with that fake enthusiasm, and then when you tell it that the answer is wrong, it agrees and changes the answer.
