Several of my 3.5 inch sata HDD just died or showing some problem.
And I just noticed they died just a few month after the warranty expired.
God damn it.

I need to buy new HDD to store and recover what media I can recover from those HDD.
No idea which brand is better nowadays, Seagate or WD or Toshiba.
cheap and redudant is the way to go.
majority of my hdds in use still are 'untested' batches from ebay datacenter writeoffs thrown in raid

they shouldnt suffer too much from the firmware hellscape of (modern) ssds

You seem to know a lot about data storage. I also want to backup stuff but I’m scared when I buy multiple drives (3) that they will fail on me after 10 years. I like to backup but I’m not sure what to look out for among the sdd/hdd to know which are the most reliable(long term storage and not failing) and where it is cheapest to buy. Anyone got some tips or sites I can visit to become more experienced with data storages? I thought about using cd’s for safe long term storage but probably the data transfer on those are extremely slow.

You should not be scared your drives can fail in 10 years. You should trust that some of your drives will fail in 5 years, and even one can fail tomorrow, then set up your storage accordingly to handle that situation.

Now, there's no one fit all answer. It depends on your storage requirements. HDDs are cheap and I can easily afford them so I just get bulk recert drives to store a lot of media. But there's no reason for you to go for the same setup if you only have 5GB of critical data and store around 2TB of anime or something like that.

Optical storage is ok but it is quite unwieldy so don't rely on it for easy access. Best to write some critical data there once and keep as offsite backup.

The most reliable option is a lot of cheap drives. You can splurge and buy a brand new drive, one of those that are reviewed to be more reliable but if it fails and you have no backup, you are fucked. Even if you can get back the money with warranty, your data is already gone. With the same money, you can get 2 recert/refurb drives. Now even if one of them fails, you can just grab more cheap drives to replace, and I can bet you they aren't that any less reliable than brand new drives, or some people even believe they are even more reliable than brand new drives due to HDDs having a bathtub failure curve (i.e. HDDs are more likely to die during the first year of operation or after very long usage of a decade or more).

If you want to get a lot of drives for cheap and with decent customer support and reliability, check if there's a local server part dealer in your area. Else try serverpartdeals.com.

Also don't use SSD for long term storage. It's just a bad idea. Both financially and for the safety of your data. Use SSDs for what they are intended for: hot data.

Damn, the first Arrow Lake reviews are brutal. Performance in applications and power/temps have improved somewhat from Raptor Lake, but gaming performance fell off a cliff.

Despite that, I still think I could give this CPU a look, since it shows good results in AI generation which is important to me right now, and I don't play a lot of AAA games often enough that I would notice the bad gaming benchmarks (or to justify in investing in an X3D chip). But still, I'd preferably like a CPU that's an all-rounder at both productivity and games, because I never know what games I will play in the future.

I'm not in a rush to build now and I'm still waiting on the B-series motherboards from both AMD and Intel and the non-K chips next year before making an informed decision on my new PC. Hopefully, the initial problems with Arrow Lake would have been ironed out by then so I can decide whether to go for AL or Ryzen 7000/9000.

Really glad about my Raptor Lake CPU right about now. The last ones before a major shift in technology are usually the good stuff, and this time seems no exception.

Except for the degradation from voltage spikes on some mobos.

Yeah, that stuff sounds scary but so far I haven't had any crashes or issues. I bet having a good mobo and a good cooler helps too. And luck. And not having an i9.

i have that computer in the thumbnail, or a very similar one.
(Olivetti M24; mine's an AT&T 6300 but it's the same thing, just in a less handsome color scheme because americans can't have nice looking things)
Also interestingly the keyboard has a quadrature mouse connector on it, and this is from before the AT PC's even came out.
[files.catbox.moe] (IMG:[files.catbox.moe] https://files.catbox.moe/41gsqc.jpg)
It used an 8086 and a 16 bit expansion bus before 16 bit ISA was a thing, when most PC clones and the IBM's themselves used an 8088 (an 8 bit data bus version; 8086 is 16 bit). It's got a sort of VLB-like thing where the initial slot is normal ISA and then there's an extra slot behind it for special 16 bit cards. There's a Z8000 CPU card for it that I'd like to find some day.
The display is also a ~24KHz one that does something like a 640x400 pixel screen (with special translation hardware so that IBM PC stuff is compatible). Mine's a green screen but there's also a CGA version of the monitor out there somewhere. The graphics chipset is the same so replacing the monitor would get me colour.
Mine's maxed out at 640kb ram and uses 360KB floppies.

People were laughing at AMD's 5-10% improvement in gaming performance until Intel launched its new CPUs with -5-0% gaming performance.

The 9800x3D has 'upto' 30% increase in gaming performance with an 'extreme' overlock to 5.6ghz but requires some beefy cooling to get anywhere close to that. Also like with last gen, I wonder if AMD CPUs will have large variation between units even within the same product sku.

Even 30% increase in performance was not very exciting back in the day. The marketing must be working.

edit: 9950x3D might be good if they put 3D cache on both packages but I think its pure speculation at this stage.

edit2: Wtf, I bought a small high capacity portable hard drive (traditional) it must put out bonkers EMF as it affects my PC audio when using it. My PC uses all SSDs but still.... seems a bit yikes.

Could also be a USB problem. One of my mobos USB ports is fried, when searching online I can see has happened to other people with this premium ASUS mobo... wouldn't surprise me if its an ASUS manufacturing problem.

i dread whenever this forum migrates to some newer forum software

it "might" be necessary technically, but so much will be lost of this experience and it is one of the few forums I can use that still feels like home.

I switched to a 3-monitor setup for the first time. Or more accurately, I re-connected my old 2nd monitor in portrait mode so now I have this mess.

(IMG:[i.imgur.com] https://i.imgur.com/VGngzdN.png)

Honestly I doubt I'll turn it on very often, but at least now I can have a youtube video AND a video game AND a chat window/browser open if I want to. Not sure if this is something I want to encourage. My excuse is that I already had the thing just laying around so I might as well try it.

9800x3D takes the gaming crown and improves the frame pacing/timing gap with intel.

better power and thermal headroom means it actually gets closer to the rated all core speed.

if the 9950x3D has v-nand on all CCDs it might beat intel in production as well.

Gigabyte leaked that with overclocking you can get 18% more performance out of the 16 core X3D processors and 5% out of the 9800x3D. Previously there was no overclocking headroom.

Kinda ranting, but personally I enjoyed it more when most website didn't have dynamic content updates.
I know that it's probably more convenient or efficient for most, but I got distracted too easily with modern style website.

And for some reason I can't explain, I just don't like using modern website/apps.
It's like they are built to make me spend as much time and focus on those, and preferably make me want to subscribe to hopefully get better experience or support.

I agree, ehentai hasn't changed much which is a massive bonus in my book. I can't stand modern sites or shitty apps. may the rest of tech giants burn in their AI fires, forever overflowing with ''content''

the main issue I have with most modern sites is they run terribly, somehow things on way better hardware run like ass compared to how the internet was in the era of flash and java web horrors on an old xp laptop.
that and everything looks like a phone ui these days

Same. I also dislike so many sites relying on notification systems now. It seems like a handy feature, getting notified of a reply etc. But it quickly diminishes the "culture" of the website to people getting fixated on what's "relevant" for them. It's a subtle thing people might not pick up on if they didn't spend years or decades on the older style platforms, but it's quite noticable for anyone who did.

Back when people had to browse sites rather than react to notifications, even if it was a few seconds slower, it lead to a lot more organic participation among a wider set of topics. You'd see thread titles, maybe read a few posts and realize you had an anecdote to share. Or whatever it was. Not just following the thread of breadcrums left by the machine to guide you through the "most efficient" content.
