I ordered a new monitor. Asus ROG Swift PG32UCDP.
God damn these 4K OLEDs are expensive, but it's not like I found any noticably cheaper alternatives and this one's supposed to be the new and improved.

They finally got some in stock, and boy it sure is big. Have to do some testing with video games, but so far my buyer's remorse percentage is zero. No dead pixels or any issues of that nature.

QUOTE(Drone-chan @ Oct 9 2024, 12:54) *

The phone company has been bitching at me for years to change phones, ''muh 4G/5G", ''Muh secure Sim cards", "muh smart network!" but I told them I don't give a shit. Worse comes to worse I'll just get a new dumb phone that has 4g. They can keep their big brother bitch chips, I aint paying money for the privilege of being cattle.

I recently had to "upgrade" my old 2G phone to a new 4G flip phone dumb phone when switching carriers. They say they support 2G, but my old Nokia didn't find any reception despite working flawlessly on the old network.

Well, luckily the new Nokia does, even though it's dogshit because it's just some chink jank with the "Nokia" brand slapped on it. But at least it's not powerful enough to spy on me.

After 2 days of playing a bunch of different games and watching some youtube videos, I wholeheartedly recommend the PG32UCDP. One thing that surprised me is that I got used to the size/resolution almost instantly. It just feels right, and I have it at the same distance or even a little closer than I used to have my 27" 1440p. This is the correct size monitor for this setup and what it always should've been. 3D action games feel more immersive and 2D strategy and autism games that I enjoy playing have a lot more room to display information or leave floating windows up to keep track of things.

The deep blacks still blow my mind, and maybe it's thanks to them that I feel satisfied leaving the monitor at 50%-80% brightness most of the time where as I used to blast the old one at 100% brightness all day every day. The color balance and the "vibrancy" of the image doesn't feel any less so at lower brightness like it did with the IPS monitor. My eyes just adjust.

Also I noticed some new reviews came out after I had already placed my order: [www.rtings.com] https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/asus...t-oled-pg32ucdp
tl;dr 9.2 for PC gaming, 9.8 for Response Time and 9.9 for SDR Picture. Sounds about right. Also ranked #1 (tied) on their best monitors for PC gaming list.

10% more expensive for 5% less performance but in theory they do not randomly die because they are more power efficient.

People were expecting a P-core only model but there's nothing to see on that front yet.

Also Nvidia is getting around the US export laws to China with their tech fusion monster card.

Nvidia: "if you buy a 4090d, a 3090ti and a RMA'd 4090, we can fuse them together into a 4090d 48gb vram ultra, premium pricing on all cards of course. Then if you buy two of those, you can match the FP64 precision of the last generation base model A100 40GB GPU for AI. If you then configure three sets of those, then you are matching the A100 80gb latest generation"

So they are charging $5000 USD for the two 4090d, new 3090tis were back up to $2500 for China. So $7500 x 6, so they are probably getting $35-45k instead of 25k for the A100 80gb.

Several of my 3.5 inch sata HDD just died or showing some problem.
And I just noticed they died just a few month after the warranty expired.
God damn it.

I need to buy new HDD to store and recover what media I can recover from those HDD.
No idea which brand is better nowadays, Seagate or WD or Toshiba.

That sounds like high temp issue? Does the case have proper airflow?

It is really annoying when they do not list whether it CMR or SMR and you have to deep dive to find out.

There are some reports of the new Arrow lake having stability issues as well. Not sure if people are paranoid or intel is just screwing up. They reduced the power limit by default, so I expected far better stability.

People are now flipping to say Zen 5 is good because its not so unstable.

edit: Its the cheat detection in some games booting people for potential data corruption which was how they found problems with the previous 2-3 gens. So nothing is confirmed but people are on edge.

Especially when the "same" product can be either like is the case with WD Reds, so you need to know the product code to know which one it is. Both are sold under the same name though.

Cheapest dollar/TB you can get, then get a few extra for backups, also the cheapest possible. Though, do avoid the weird 3TB/5TB ones. Worrying about which brand is more reliable is silly unless you are buying a significant quantity (hundreds). If I were in your shoes, I would just get 10 of [serverpartdeals.com] these then call it a day.

Just checked my orders from last year and I bought at 11.6 bucks/TB. The current price seems to hover around 13+, which is dog shit. I recommend waiting for a drop if you want to buy bulk.

Yeah, I already got scammed by Seagate with SMR drive once.
I bought the same Seagate external HDD model like the one I usually bought almost every 2 year.
From the first day, I kinda think the HDD have bad performance but I didn't know better.
I only realized later it's actually SMR, after the drive turned raw after 1 month usage.
I still hold grudges for that.
I will never want SMR HDD anymore.

QUOTE(EsotericSatire @ Oct 24 2024, 13:47) *

I don't think it's temp issue.
For one of the HDD, I suspect it was old stock or something.
When I checked the SN on seagate website, it said the warranty already expired (before my date of purchase).
And the retails store bought it from local distributor, it should be new not refurbish.
Though next time, I'll just check the SN and HDD bad sector before using it.
Really can't trust anything nowadays.

For the other one, I think my external HDD dock or the USB slot on my Windows 10 PC have issue.
Or it was that fucking Windows 10 fault.
For some reason, that PC won't allow me to safely removing my HDD.
So I just shut down my PC before removing the cable.
After a few times, the HDD become RAW.
That HDD isn't SMR fortunately.

Ironwolf Pro model huh.
My almost dead HDD is normal Ironwolf 4Tb model.
I kinda want to try Pro but I heard it was hotter than normal model.
Though I doubt the local price for that model is the cheapest/TB.
It was Seagate Barracuda model, and I believe it was trash SMR.

Is local and new non-negotiable? Even after I eat the shipping fee, buying recert drives from SPD is still much cheaper than most other options for me (besides buying 2nd hand well used drives but those have higher risk than I can tolerate).
Why 4TB though? Being constrained by size and having to use 2.5" is another matter, but bigger 3.5" HDDs cost less energy in the long run, and are usually much less likely to be SMR. IIRC anything >8TB is gonna be CMR and only a selected few 8TB drives are SMR.
Tbh I don't think warranty is gonna be helpful. I would rather get 2 recert drives for the price of a brand new one and use the extra drive as backup.

Even if in the end you managed to save a few bucks (I highly doubt it), who wants to spend any more time than necessary swapping out drives and worrying about then crapping out early?

AI generative hentai image…
What’s your thoughts?
I feel like there are lots of people hating them, which I can understand from an artists’ point of view… but as also someone likes technology, I am also fascinated by how good they are…

AI generated hentai looks like dogshit, and the fact that there are people amazed by it once again highlights just how utterly low the standards are for the average human (also see: state of modern media, facebook memes, fast food, mobile gaming etc.)

The only real use for AI in porn would be to replace human actors considering all we know about the harms of doing porn and exploitation going on in the industry. Or if you really wanted child porn to be widely available without abusing minors, or some other weird fetish material that would require hurting real people otherwise. But neither of those are really an issue with hentai. I guess there's some potential promise in interactivity that AI can deliver. But for plain hentai images? It's a case of "you can have 10 000 shitty pictures in the time it used to create 1 good one!" As if anyone out there would have the time to read even just all the human artist created doujins. It was already a quality over quantity market.

Thanks for the reply, and you have a good point at having AI to replace some of the harmful aspects as well as the insights for how the potential danger of encouraging the ‘fast food’ culture.

You seem to know a lot about data storage. I also want to backup stuff but I’m scared when I buy multiple drives (3) that they will fail on me after 10 years. I like to backup but I’m not sure what to look out for among the sdd/hdd to know which are the most reliable(long term storage and not failing) and where it is cheapest to buy. Anyone got some tips or sites I can visit to become more experienced with data storages? I thought about using cd’s for safe long term storage but probably the data transfer on those are extremely slow.
