The difference is going to be marginal anyway, if the HD600 is the predecessor model and uses the same or similar open backed design. Even open backed headphones aren't a super new technology, since the HD414's are from the 1960's (1968).

Speaker technology, including headphone technology, has been very mature since the 1960s and 1970s, and the main things that change now are materials (less biodegradeable/weatherable construction compared to older ones that used more "organic" material like paper) and weight reductions. But to my knowledge (and I used to repair loudspeakers as my job, so I was in proximity to this field and think I know what I'm talking about), there has not been a recent major earth-shaking change in headphone design. Open backed ones have simply become more mainstream and perhaps more affordable.

Oh, and the pads are probably nicer on high quality new ones than they were on high quality new ones in the 70s.
QUOTE(EsotericSatire @ Feb 19 2024, 06:34) *
Checking out some good reviewers. Its the HD 600 with the improved headband from late model HD600/650, different ear pads, and the latest revision of the coil dampening, similar to what 3rd party upgraders were selling.

With the HD 600 pads it measures within 5% of the HD600 with better treble control due to the dampening upgrade. With the HD 490 pads it measures a bit more mid / treble forward.

With the HD600 pads it is 'technically' objectively better, however it may take the HD 490 ear pads to be able to hear a subjective difference (pads that are included).

The headband is supposed to be more comfortable but won't be much of an upgrade over very recent HD600/650s.

As with all Sennheisers since back in the day when I was an actual reviewer, it depends on price, and also probably your musical interests. Higher end Sennheiser are usually good for soundstage, classical, music with instruments and female vocals.
Currently rolling with a 600 and 800S for the Senny collection. Both are great, but with the former, I'm looking for a successor that doesn't try to squeeze my head into pieces. Sound-wise, I'm not looking for an improvement so much as just the "same sound (and longevity) but more comfort". Not exactly the biggest fan of the 600 series in terms of that.

QUOTE(dragontamer8740 @ Feb 18 2024, 06:26) *
So anyway, I recommend you just go for a predecessor model from sometime in the last 10 years, save a bunch of money, and get something that's 90+% as good. Better that way than being the lucky one to find out senheiser did some cost cutting on their shiny new product.
I don't like buying used HPs mostly due to uh... hygiene reasons. Arguably just OCD since you can just swap the pads and band (unless you buy Focal in which I dunno how the fuck you are expected to swap the headband), but I can't stand putting a used (and potentially filthy) thing so closed to my head.

I didn't say used ones. I said old ones.

Like, still in the box, but just outdated by 10 seconds and therefore worthless.

Usually when something new comes out the old one's still available for a while.

Ah, I see. I don't mind those yeah, but never had much luck in finding "new tho aged but still nice" HPs. Maybe it's because of the specific models I'm looking for, god knows.

No Sennheiser are dicks. They cracked down on a lot of stores and sellers. If you want to be an official seller and have access to distribution you have to obey their marketing and sales (if they have ever have them these days).

It used to be possible to get older models or versions for big discounts but they have eliminated all the legit sources.

Got fed up with fixing my Model M keyboard by drawing over broken traces on its membrane with a conductive pen; just ordered a new membrane from Unicomp.

Thankfully I've already bolt modded this keyboard so it should just need unscrewing and re-screwing. Easier said than done, but still I hope this is the last thing I'll have to do for it for a while.

[www.pckeyboard.com] https://www.pckeyboard.com/page/product/MEM

Once again I am very happy Unicomp exists.

--

also if anyone's got a job (repair, hardware modding, programming some tool for them, etc) they'd pay me to do then I'd consider it. Still trying to find a job I don't hate and could use some money to hold me over.

Debugged the sound on my arcade. Still don't entirely know what the problem was apart from arcade system jank.

Seems my experimentation returned the setup more to what it was stock, with a audio step down and a linear power supply.

No clue if Q-Sound is working but I think the channels are no longer dropping out, also far less cross talk and the noise floor is lower.

edit: It doesn't have a sub-woofer, but apparently there is a compatible logitech one which is the cheapest option that I could throw in.

With high end OLED monitors they are still trying to meet the latency / response / input lag / motion clarity and blacks of CRTs.

Though I was reading you need a 1000mhz 4k oled to truely eclipse CRTs in all areas. Currently I think they are maxing out at 300mhz.

My main concern is the relatively short life expectancy of some OLEDs though.

480hz actually, i'd say the only real advantage crt has is rolling scan.
I'm hoping to sit out oled out, too many issues. I just hope microled doesn't take too long to come to the consumer desktop market.

No native resolution
I'll be using plasmas and CRT's until I can't anymore probably.

LG has a OLED that can switch between native 4K/240hz and 1080p/480hz modes, which is kinda cool if you're into playing fast paced games with high fps.

yeah I am kinda worried about some of the problems with OLEDs.

I went with QLED (a few years ago now) because of the burn in issue. Still have a plasma as well.

All the monitors I have are IPS though.

I wanted to get a new screen, but I'm having trouble with selling websites, and it doesn't help that searching something can be quite the trial.
One big worry I have is that I would need a desk arm for monitor, but even when saying they "support 40+ inches" and "allow 360° rotation", I'm not sure that guarantee the bigger monitors can be used in portrait mode (because the screen would go too far below and hit the desk before reaching 90°).
I wish AI took power already or something, they would never deliberately leave holes in information to hide defects of products like that, or just be too lazy to fix it if it's not intentional.

That's not quite the same as what I mean by "no native resolution"; no native resolution is when the number of color phosphors on the screen don't correlate to any specific resolution and no scaling math has to be done to display any resolution within the scan rates the screen supports.

It means 480p looks crisp just like 1080p does. As long as the phosphor fade time and slew rate of the amplifiers for the electron guns allow for it at least.

Anyone used those credits card sized FM radios (e.g., Sony SRF-201)? Looks pretty cool, but I donno how practical they are even back then. Feels like the thing is gonna go dead in just mins of use.

I haven't, but I can tell you you will get plenty of hours out of one... if the battery can be replaced. Probably uses less power than a Game Boy (which also has to drive a speaker). Looks like it uses 3x AA batteries, so I'd guess it might even be able to go ~18-24 hours on one set of batteries. If you use rechargeables it'd be good.

EDIT:
Was looking at [www.radiomuseum.org] https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/sony_walkman_srf_201.html - which has an external battery holder.

This has pics of the internal batteries. I'd still expect multiple hours of battery life possibly. But you might need to solder to replace those.
Be careful if you use NiMH batteries since the chargers for those need to be more careful than NiCad chargers. Or get a trickle charger (very slow).

I did ages ago. Used it up in the mountains where it somehow had reception. Stopped working after a few years when I got it, but it was quite old by that stage.

Then I switched to an old walkman back when mixtapes were all the rage.

Been messing with my browser cookies because I changed my password and NONE of the browsers on my powerbook G4 can do the reCaptcha on the login page properly anymore. Eventually got it (changing cookies to log me in) to work... but it was still stupid.

Thought: I hate recaptcha.

Also I noticed netsurf, when loading the page, seems to request the image in my signature multiple times, so that within a single page load the signature image varies across posts. That's cool.

Sigh.

Debian's rolling out 't64' (64-bit time ABI) packages in Sid now for 32-bit systems. All packages now have 't64' at their ends... super fucking annoying.

So there's effectively now two 32-bit (non-'x32') ABI's. One for ancient 32 bit programs and one for newer ones. Yay.

Optical storage may make a come back with the latest petabyte capacity.

Oh its a CCP tech. Hmmmm. Maybe / maybe not then.

edit: Oh good, AI viruses already. They also have zero click attacks exploiting all the AI integration.

Typical.
