Christmas Fever tried to push me to buy a new screen, but it just ended up being too complicated. I would probably have to buy a separate "screen holder" (not sure what the right keywords are) to be able to use it in portrait mode, but this is a very user-unfriendly thing, so for now all plans are failing.

I accidentally stripped the screws that hold the hinge in place for the front door of my Coolermaster Silencio s600 case. What's the best way to get the darn screw out? Have tried the rubber band on a tip of a screwdriver trick but I can't get it to turn.

monitor stand or monitor arm, depending on your intended usage

I have an intel CPU and flashed my drive anyway.

Wait? Intel has dropped the SGX extensions now? So flashing the drive for a new comp is required unless UHD ditch the requirement?

Hm? Did they?
My CPU is over 10 years old now in that desktop.

That's hilarious, though.

Got a Plextor external SCSI CD-ROM drive with a CD caddy today.
I already love CD caddies.

thought gonna buy a new LED display phone. currently using Samsung N10+ with OLED which is kinda rough on my eyes while normal LED display devices are fine (e.g. desktop monitor& laptop)

There was an exponentially growing list of spectre like vulnerabilities and zero day malware vulnerabilities.

Though its still on xeons for cloud and enterprise where they have uses other than DRM and charge a sufficient premium to cover the increased security costs.

Edit: I was going to update to the latest bios for my mobo for security vulnerabilities but people are saying the hit to performance is huge, like can be 10-20% FPS for my CPU.

dang.

I never update my BIOS/CPU firmware for this kind of thing. And actively turn off security mitigations in the linux kernel.

I want the performance I paid for.

You turn off the security mitigations in the linux kernel too?

Yes.

If an attacker is running code on my computer (and therefore in a position to utilize these kinds of bugs), I've already invited them in.

Also I'm not going to cripple my already limited performance just for something that I don't think I am particularly likely to be a victim of.

I treat every platform I use as if it's about as vulnerable as Windows 2000 was in 2010. And take precautions accordingly - but this usually is in the form of me asking myself about the implications of something I'm thinking of doing/running.

I don't think spectre and meltdown have ever actually been used outside of proof of concepts. mitigations=off all the time, especially on older hardware you lose like 20% performance.

I believe you are right about that, but I hadn't checked back in on it recently so I wasn't going to mention it.

CODE
mitigations=off noibrs noibpb nopti nospectre_v2 nospectre_v1 l1tf=off nospec_store_bypass_disable no_stf_barrier mds=off tsx=on tsx_async_abort=off

I use all of that (redundantly), in case something ever gets categorized separately from 'mitigations,' to make sure it stays off in future kernels.

They have been used and such things increasingly are part of script kiddie toolkits. Predominately though they rely on user error and/or zero day vulnerabilities to gain privileged / elevated access or remote access.

Vulnerabilities in things like pngs and gifs to allow code to execute are probably the most annoying until patched.

Getting a d-sub socket pin crimping tool to redo the wiring of a joystick I got.

I'd just get a new cord, but practically no one makes coiled cables anymore. And I love coiled cables too much.

I have nearly all Asus hardware and peripherals ... yet their all in one software (can't even install stand alone software anymore) still causes memory and hardware conflicts.

I had hoped after nearly a year of updates they would have fixed it. All they have fixed is that the uninstaller now removes nearly everything.

Drill it out.

Or if the screw face is bulging out beyond the front of the case, cut a slot into it with a dremel and then turn it like that.

tried out librewolf (yet another literally why firefox fork) on some peoples recommendation, runs better yet also worse than firefox. seems theres still no escaping mozilla
I wonder if I'll ever escape the worsening browser hellscape and get something good that'll also put up with semi modern webware, though I fear just the sheer horribleness of the current web will greately limit how well a browser can perform if you want some of that stuff to run.

in other thoughts strongly considering dumping opnsense again it remains a hassle compared to openwrt, despite openwrt on x86 seeming a bit overkill its starting to seem a lot nicer than the 'proper enterprise' wares of opnsense/pfsense

Friend of mine spilled water on their WRT1900AC V1 (which they got on my recommendation - since it has an active cooling fan unlike the later models - and had OpenWRT on).

I don't have physical access to their locaion to help them figure out if it's fixable; do you guys think it could just be a blown surface mount fuse or some shit like that? Maybe the power brick itself self destructed upon overcurrent?

I will admit I have never spilled water on electronics and broken them. Once got a game boy to malfunction playing it in the rain, but it worked after it dried off. Not so in this case.

I'm sending them one of those chinese T12 soldering stations for their birthday. Wondering if you think it might be something they could attempt to fix with somewhat low stakes that might actually be successful.

malware you mean. I had to install it to config my LEDs since each light plays by their own rules and the only thing that works for me is ASUSSY armory crate. Tried openrgb, the GPU LED doesn't work.

if the uninstaller actually works, that's a big step forward. from their 12 miles backward with the stupid app.

honestly if its just a small spill a lot of the times cleaning it off gently with isopropyl and a toothbrush will do it, it turning off will have just been a short somewhere or an ic not liking the moisture.
realistically, unless you dumped and entire glass over it theres really not that many places where the water will have gone with how covered the board is in heatsinks, could just be some (partly) shorted connections in one of the connectors or some moisture in the coils. if it did get into more and theres moisture under all the heatsinks it might be slightly more of a challenge, laziest solution just let it sit in rice for a day or two then keep debugging when you're sure theres little to no moisture.

if all easy steps dont work its usually a case of checking what gets hot (assuming power it doesnt trip psu instantly) and then replacing or reflowing that part. rarely parts will die in less useful ways like fully open or ic packages that take no current but I'd say at least 9/10 some package shorts internally and it'll call itself out as being fucked thermally

how not working is it anyway? nothing? some frozen on leds? bootlooping?
