QUOTE(Kudowafu @ Dec 7 2023, 01:33) I really want to switch my AMD based Ryzen 5900X to Intel 14700K but trying to hold back one more generation, maybe Intel will actually surprise with 15th gen. I'm probably 10 "generations" behind (actually years; I don't really consider die shrinks to be true 'generations'), and still don't feel like I'm missing much. I think a lot of this is in peoples' heads. I get that some people need more power than I do, And maybe AVX2 instructions. But upgrading between top-end products every 2-4 years still feels excessive, even if you're playing the newest games. It's not the 1990s anymore where CPU speeds were doubling every couple years. I am not planning to upgrade my 5900x until 2028.

The fact that my old Ryzen 3600 died randomly months ago still confuses me. Checked pins all fine. Dunno if it's just my luck really sucks bananas or what.
Edit: Started experiencing random software crashes and, occasionally, a good'ol BSOD about six months before it became an e-waste.

Could be heat problems, there were issues reported six months ago of some CPUs running too hot and causing issues. Are you able to get into bios? Tech Yes City was able to res some of them by disabling four cores, lowering the clock speeds then re-enabling the cores one by one and testing if stable. Someone mentioned a better option to tampermonkey? It was working fairly well for me but something updated yesterday and then firefox stopped being able to load webpages unless I disable the plug in?

Was using a Thermalright TS120 for cooling. Would be pretty enough for a 3600 I reckon? QUOTE(EsotericSatire @ Dec 8 2023, 19:37) Are you able to get into bios?
Sold the motherboard back in June, when the state of the CPU became more and more unstable, and switched to an Intel platform, which was a 10400F. Basically the only choice I had considering my budget and needs. That old Ryzen's still collecting dust on my shelf though. Was considering buying some resin to repurpose it for a little tech-themed craft. Watched that video from Tech Yes City. Very informative! I might scout around for a cheap used A320 board (or B350s) just to see if I can sorta revive that poor soul, and prolly to see how far I can go without it start dying again. Sounds like a fun little project to do. And if things don't go as planned, I can always go back to the resin part. (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) Thanks for helping!

Had to do some searching on that one. Googled "electromigration CPU", and literally in the top three search results, there's that one article titled "Why AMD Ryzen Current Boosting Won't Kill Your CPU" published in June 2020. Guess that didn't age well for me... If that's what happened to mines, which I kinda felt like it was. Then I guess my little "project" is going nowhere now... Welp, guess I'll whip out my phone and order some resin now. Ahh, so that's why that 10yrs old i3-3240 in my dad's PC runs better than back when I'm using that Ryzen... at least from the perspective of stability. QUOTE(dragontamer8740 @ Dec 9 2023, 13:34) Heat does accelerate the speed at which electromigration occurs.
Just checked the current temp of my 10400F, around 28 to 30 Celsius (82~86F) at light load. Hope that electro thing won't occur on this one... Thanks for those infos!

Every 10oC below 70oC you double the life of the CPU. At 70oC it should last 20 years, at stock voltage. In theory Intel and AMD claim that it is safe to push the CPUs to stay at 90oC. The problem with some Ryzen CPUs is that mobos are pushing CPUs with SoC voltages that are at the limit of safety with temps that are at the limit of maximum. Over time that is not a great combo. The auto overclocking algorithms from some vendors have been a bit too aggressive. Its getting complicated for intel and AMD though, as with AMD you might have one chiplet that can take more voltage and temp than the other, and even within a chiplet some cores can run higher frequency/voltage/temp than others. Same with intel with the big little design. With my current AMD 5900X, the original bios was running very high voltages to be stable. I was able to get the ram to incredible timings but the voltages were worrying. A newer bios update lowered the auto voltages but I could not get the extreme timings to work again so I had to dial them back a bit.

Hm, your cores might run at about the heat mine do, then. I am using the old stock intel cooler with the copper slug in the middle. That's a pretty reasonably low/cool temperature. CODE $ sensors|head coretemp-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter Package id 0: +34.0°C (high = +85.0°C, crit = +105.0°C) Core 0: +27.0°C (high = +85.0°C, crit = +105.0°C) Core 1: +32.0°C (high = +85.0°C, crit = +105.0°C) Core 2: +28.0°C (high = +85.0°C, crit = +105.0°C) Core 3: +30.0°C (high = +85.0°C, crit = +105.0°C) I have an i5-3470 in mine right now. And an i5-3350p as a backup if it ever starts having problems. The 3470 was traded to me in payment/exchange for me fixing someone's game boy, but I've had the 3350p since it was new. You will probably be fine, but maybe check if your motherboard will let you reduce the CPU voltage. It might be that the voltage the motherboard says it is using is a little bit lower than what it is actually using. If so, it might mean there's some small issue with the motherboard's voltage regulator and you might need to undervolt it to correct for that. If you run the CPU at a somewhat lower voltage, it will run cooler and probably last longer. Not all CPU's can be undervolted very much, but a slight downward tweak is very likely possible and can significantly impact temperatures and longevity. Especially if the 'undervolting' is actually just bringing it down to the voltage it was designed for. This post has been edited by dragontamer8740: Dec 11 2023, 08:57

Logged some numbers with HWiNFO last night for about an hour while I'm doing my translation/Photoshop stuff. Says my CPU voltage were at 0.966v Lowest and 1.074v Highest. Clock speed were at 3.98GHz and 4.28GHz. Also checked the bios for voltages this morning. CODE CPU: i5-10400F MB: MSI MAG B460M MORTAR Voltage Setting CPU Core Voltage Off Set Mode [Auto] CPU Core Voltage Offset 0.854V Auto CPU SA Voltage 1.052V Auto CPU IO Voltage 0.946V Auto DRAM Voltage 1.200V Auto Think these were already on the low side. Should I still tune them down? Without them causing troubles, of course. Heard undervolting the CPU too much could cause some stability issues. All settings were stock. Only tuned fan curves for the sake of my ears. Edit: QUOTE(EsotericSatire @ Dec 12 2023, 13:08) Which CPU is that with? Those voltages seem okay depending on platform.
Oopsie, forgot to include that. It's an i5-10400F. This post has been edited by 侯羽哥: Dec 12 2023, 07:25

My current 5900x autos at 1.1 to 1.48 which seems a little high sometimes. Though my temps are 40-50oc.
Seems a bios update I did a while back fixed an old issue. Running prime 95, the voltage is going to 1.1volt which is okay. The problematic behaviour for people was when it was going to a high sustained voltage under max load. Temp maxed a 70oC under prime 95 but its water cooled.

If you're struggling with temps, downvolt at -10mV steps, stress test for at least 30 min using an up2date version of linpack extreme making sure the score stays in the same ballpark and residuals match. If all is fine, you're still stable. Generally i learned that anywhere between -25-50mV works well for Intel CPUs on stock clocks.

Today, while seeing a TV being transported, the type that set up vertically is as tall as an adult, and thinking about my pc screen especially picked for its ability to rotate by 90° included, and that already feel big in portrait/vertical mode, I wondered if one day I would have a screen like that, and how reading a manga on something that big would feel (at least it may be easier to read without getting the eyes tired on small characters lol)

I want a 1:1 monitor so I can read manga or watch a movie and have the same size picture.

Back when I didn't have any income, I also looked for exclusively monitors with the ability to rotate by itself lol. These days I just grab another monitor arm. Massive monitors give me motion sickness when I play game while sitting close to them so maybe reading manga on a huge monitor might not be the best experience.

When you get really old and start losing the ability to focus up close (this is independent of whether you are near or far-sighted, or have otherwise perfect vision) then a really big TV/monitor helps.
This started happening to me only kind of recently, and I wouldn't have been able to play this game anymore if I hadn't moved to a 65" screen. It does pose some unusual challenges in that your standard keyboard and mouse cords may not be long enough if you go much bigger than this.

Your opinions on unbranded USB 4G LTE modems sold as "modded" or "unlocked". Firmware was modified so that it would also work with sim cards or mobile plans specifically designated by Telco for mobile phone use only. Due to this, there's a risk that the firmware could contain malicious codes e.g. intercept data traffic & redirect to a 3rd party client/server. A possibility? Or hogwash?

There's a chance of that, but there's also a chance that was slipped into all the non-modded chips at the factory in China when they were made. I'd not worry so much about it, especially if you are using HTTPS and other encrypted connections. Even if the modem "phones home" it can't decrypt stuff the CPU encrypted before sending to it. At some point, you have to trust trust regardless. [ www.cs.cmu.edu] https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~rdriley/487/papers/...ustingTrust.pdfThis post has been edited by dragontamer8740: Dec 14 2023, 04:46

New nerfed 3050 released as people were buying the old 3050 instead of the 4060.
Its more like 3040, it performs 20% slower than the previous 3050.

Did they offer any defense for why they did that?

My Chinese T12-tip soldering iron and controller came today. Works pretty well. I cut a corner off of the heat sink where it overlapped with a mains power trace, and now it's probably rather safe, I guess. I still hate OLED screens, though. Would much prefer a standard dot matrix backlit monochrome LCD. They'd also last longer than this OLED one will before going dim. Not quite as powerful at 75W as my Pace iron (150W), but much more compact and much more affordable.
Packing a second iron I ordered up as a birthday gift for someone (this poor soul has a birthday very close to christmas).

Another thought: 8GB of DDR2 Laptop RAM (2x4GB) is so expensive.

I don't do kemono imports often... I really don't want some of the artists I care about more to be imported very frequently. But there's one I'm importing out of spite and want to unsubscribe from afterwards, since they randomly deleted all their old (awesome) patreon posts and switched to drawing seemingly exclusively fat fetish art without warning or explanation. Thankfully their old posts were already upped, I just want to get it up to date before I pull the plug.
But Kemono has been stuck with importing 'In Progress™' for the last 48 hours. Can't even try to import my session key again because it says "there's already a job running."
That site is so ass sometimes.
There are a couple people I support who post something maybe once a year, just apologizing for not posting more. Maybe I'm super gullible, but from past discussions with them when they were more active I really think they're telling the truth about their mental health crises and work exhaustion... since I experience a fair deal of that myself. I know probably they aren't getting many new supporters when they're this inactive, but I want them to find happiness. Plus they actually communicate their situation rather than just say "welp, time to start drawing exclusively fat fucks and memory holing my old patreon content that was inactive for a year because I failed to live up to a promise I made there."
TL;DR: Kemono importer is shit and I'm not sure it will ever actually import my stuff, but the moment it does I'm pulling the plug on someone I've been supporting since 2016. I can deal with their stupid political opinions (which they frequently shared but which did not interfere with their artwork), but not with whatever it is they're doing now.
Come on, Kemono. Hurry the fuck up.
Edit: Their image board says that they're migrating stuff. Would have been good to put that on the importer page, IMO, but okay.
