Yeah, I knew most of that; I've hacked a vita for a friend before, too, so I've had some of those experiences.

The PSTV prices are retarded, it's also retarded that there's no official dock for the vita. I wasn't aware of the Vita dock part but it doesn't surprise me, since the later revisions of the non-Go PSP had video out too, iirc.

[github.com] https://github.com/SilentNightx/VitaDockPlus

Seems they resumed the project and got the slightly higher resolutions working.

960x544 @ 30FPS or 864x488 @ 60FPS native with Lanczos up-scaling.

edit: seems they have sorta gotten 720p native output but it requires resolution patches for the games.

Seems like they are trying to make it switch compatible as well to some degree, maybe for people that want one dock?

It's a shame the SXGA+ (1400x1050) LCD's in the thinkpad X61 tablets suck so badly (this glue layer under the top glass starts seeping out and leaving pine tar everywhere, and leaving bubbles in the visible area of the display).

Thinking of trying peeling the glass off, since SXGA+ panels from the X60 tablet (which didn't suffer this problem) are stupidly expensive or else fakes (X61 tablet screens with replacment polarizers after dissolving the glue and original polarizer away, coming from china).

Cutting the glue away is going to be a bitch. I've seen a video of someone doing it, but they don't explain jack shit in the video about the supplies involved. Actually, they don't speak at all.

Anyway, I still think I might be able to do it. But it's annoying, for sure. And I'm going to need a heat lamp for it (to keep the glue soft). And some tough paper, maybe artist's easel pad paper or something thick-ish like that. And some kind of oil to lubricate the paper as I shim it in.

This LCD's really nice besides the bubbling, so I'd quite like to salvage it. I like the X60/X61 tablet form factor immensely, and it's just straight up a higher resolution (both horizontally and vertically) than my X201 tablet was ever offered with two years later. Plus it's 4:3 which is nice for reading manga or viewing portrait images.

The CPU is pretty low-powered in my specific example, but everything is in really good condition besides the screen bubbling and some rattling from the fan (fixable). All the plastics seem intact, which is a big thing. I bet I'll have the same problem I have with the X200/X201 of finding batteries for this that actually will still fit while plugged into a docking station, though. All the chinese batteries like to use only 18650 cells, which are too fat for this laptop so they bulge out on the bottom of the battery. Prismatic cells are harder to come by cheap, I guess.

- SD card compatibility. They basically nerfed the device due to the cost and limited size of their memory cards. Now that you can use 400 gig sd cards that are faster, the PSvita reaches its potential.
Their reliability is very questionable too. I owned a 32GB and a 64GB card, both of them went dead eventually for some reasons.

Or 3DS for that matter. But D-pad positioning on the 3DS is awful.
Speaking of which, ever used the nipple c-stick on the new 3DS? Sent a couple of mine to RMA before, yet none of them is what I would consider as a reliable second joystick.

Yeah I had two 64gb official cards fail. I think they found the OEM and they were just mid tier cards at ultra premium prices with a weird form factor.

It was a like 150 bucks fro the 64 gig cards too....

Now using good quality SD cards, they load about 20% faster.

Yeah, the stupid thing about the vita SD card slot, is that the restrictions are hardly on hardware level. Sony just decided to softgate their memory cards in order to print some money.

You'd think they learned from the near failure of PS3 (i.e., hard to access shit = less adaptation). But apparently not.

Yeah it was stupid, 3G model + largest memory card at launch ($480) was close to the PS4 launch price $499.

Then a few months after release Sony decided to disable the ability to make calls and text msgs on the 3G model, why market features that you will just nerf lol? Seems they wanted everyone to buy the Sony phone but that is a bad reason to nerf your other products.

It was kinda hilarious silly, talking on the Vita like a phone.

Wasn't it just Skype they are planning to do? It's been so long though so I can't remember.

Skype over wifi was all they supported after that. It was weird. They said it was an accident or they did not register it as a mobile phone or something and removed the other 3G mobile features. They were selling the PSvita in phone stores here at release.

Also TikTok strikes again and bankrupted a bunch of fools. Cash App had a glitch where it made it look like you could send yourself money and spend it, but really you were just going negative and it was effectively loaning money. Some people went ham racked up tens of thousands of dollars in debt at ultra high interest.

The glitch allowed people to effectively borrow way more than $200 at the 52% pa interest rate...

Never had a new 3DS. I'd like one, but only the small kind (not the XL). So it's a little hard to find one.

I do like trackpoints a lot; even got one instead of a scroll wheel on my mouse. And my laptops don't even have touchpads because they don't need one (they have trackpoints). But I'm not sure if I'd like one on a video game console.

Damn why are 3DS so expensive still, I was going to get one when it was cheap but they are pricey still.

I heard the Sega Super Scaler games are cool on the 3DS.

Coz Nintendo stopped making them. I got lucky and sourced a new one right before the announcement. The price went nuts right after that IIRC.

I managed to snag an old 3DS for under $100 in 2018. $100 was my threshold, which I set because that's how much a GBA SP cost when new.

If I had a spare i'd offer it to you... but unfortunately I don't.

I do have a sealed in box DSi XL that I've been holding onto for a while though. Should be worth something in a few years at this rate.

Set up my music server today so I have something to listen to during commute. Not sure why I thought it would be difficult considering it's the same shit I did for a living a few years ago.

my music setup slowly went from players/files to the full mpd setup. then after realizing I never wanted more from music than playing an album or song once every while I lost interest again. didnt even bother to install mpd on server this time, if anything I listen more to the cassettes and cds or even radio than music on the server these days.

in thoughts:
after years of happily using a bodged together hakko t12 knockoff soldering setup I saw my main argument of 't12 tips are just so cheap' is gone. jbc tips can also be picked up for not that much. so I made the jump to a jbc c245 knockoff. cartridges should be a lot more powerful for the few times I remember my t12 setup being a bit too little. and more obscure tip type choices.

Used to do the same but with my ever growing library, I decided to spend some time so I have full access to the entire thing whenever I want. I listen to music for around 80% of my awake time so it's kinda a big deal.

I have an ancient Pace soldering/desoldering station (with digital temperature readout; very fancy); tips are expensive but I've not had to change mine and it's been a decade.

Wish I could say the same for the desoldering iron side of things (which needs a new heater and filter and glass tube). Hey, at least parts seem to still be available. Not bad considering this is probably from the 80s or 90s. It's certainly built like it, overall.

----
Thought 1.

Just updated my signature picture shuffler manager script thing; now it provides metadata on the sources of the images (which can be checked on the link in my signature). Just got to re-sort all the older pictures now to make it more manageable.

----
Thought 2.

Thinking of selling some of my extra vintage keyboards.
  • A couple Wyse terminal keyboards with vintage MX black switches (1888 or so)
  • A couple ADB protocol Apple rubber dome keyboards
  • Maybe a gateway rubberdome PS/2 keyboard
  • A Mitsumi miniature mechanical keyboard with cherry-style key mounts.
  • Some ALPS mount keycaps
  • Maybe one of my Model M's... but it'd have to be someone really special to me if I was to get rid of that one.
Wish there was a way that didn't invade privacy or break forum rules to offer them up somewhere unusual like here or an imageboard or some other out-of-the-way place. I'd feel a lot better about selling them if I felt the risk of them ending up in the hands of some collector who never fucking uses them was a bit lower than on ebay or a keyboard-centric forum.
And I'd be less hesitant to price lower, just because on a keyboarder forum I'd imagine some collector would snap them up if they were available at affordable prices.

Maybe a vintage computer forum would be slightly better. At least there, maybe someone would actually be intending to use the keyboard regularly... or be more inclined to reunite it with a matching computer.
But even there I'd still worry about the people like the fucking Amiga/Sun SPARCstation/DEC Alphaserver hoarders who just have garages full of shit that they will never share with anyone because it's all "SUPER RARE. ONE OF A KIND... I KNOW WHAT I'VE GOT, NO LOWBALLERS!"

Ideally, it could all go to someone who doesn't have a lot of money, but has enthusiasm or curiosity and wasn't around when the stuff was available cheap because no one wanted it. Someone sort of like me, but maybe even worse off (born later than I was, had less opportunities to find cool stuff, didn't have a chance to befriend older local people who shared interests, etc.).

I'd want a little money, just because I splurged on an old thinkpad more than I should have, and need to recover funds. But it'd make me really happy to sell them under the table at under half their ebay price points to see someone smile/get excited.

Collectors/hoarders who don't try to share their passions with others (or people who scalp collectors/hoarders) are the worst.
