Doesn't that kill off a whole bunch of the functionality for their VPN service?
Yes; I chose mullvad specifically because it supported port forwarding.

Without it, I can't be discoverable for torrents, host RTSP streams, or play any of a variety of games that allow me to self-host a server.

edit: Omg windows is so fucking stupid. Fixed a bug that was just because 'microsoft' though it would be a useful feature, killing the feature makes my comp feel fast AF again.
What bug?

They changed how they index files to try optimize explorer for the media types you have (aka scan everything for telemetry). It was optional before but now its on by default. If you have loads of different media types in a folder then it takes forever to re-index every single time.

Its stupid that telemetry features would slow windows down so much. IT was an optional feature introduced with Windows ME, it was crap then and stupid now.

Also HP is kinda evil, they released a subscription service for their ink, if you sign up to HP+ you get six months free ink, but they then install firmware that prevents you from ever using generic cartridges on the printer ever again. It was illegal to do that by default but if you are opting into a service that you opt to install the feature then that is okay... Its written in the micro fine print of the HP+ TOS.

I remember back when it was cheaper to buy a new printer than to buy the ink refill but they solved that by shipping the printers with a 'trial' ink cartridge that had far less ink than normal.

Edit: Smart devices on the cloud are stupid. Amazon shut down a dudes house for breach of TOS because his door bell thought it detected someone saying something racist and committing a thought crime.

Edit2: Nvidia already talking about launching 5000 series whilst still trying to sell off 3000 series stock.

I don't mind reddit, I just preferred where there was more of a diversity of forums. Google specifically focusing on reddit and quora has made the internet worse.

Damn, just saw a command line window quickly open and close...again!
Maybe I should just get find a lightweight (if that's even possible (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)) antivirus/antispyware for a single scan, but I suspect the culprit to be Windows itself (despite windows update being delayed, WU often causing this phenomenon), and in this case, those would just waste space and lay rotten eggs all over the place like all programs do nowadays (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Some people seem quite determined to continue using windows even as it's been made clear that windows doesn't want them to use it.

I doubt. Their little stupid blackout is like, words borrowed from some youtuber whose name I can't remember, an abuse victim telling the abuser "I'm fed up with your shit, I'm leaving for the weekends and coming back next Monday, you better change your way by the time I return" instead of filing for a divorce.

It's a bit annoying to see some of the troubleshooting subreddits being brainless but well, let them virtue signal.

Virtue signaling is the Internet's favorite pastime, meaningful change like moving to a better platform is too inconvenient.

I think a fair number of these people never used linux for more than 5 minutes; just watched that linus tech tips video where he doesn't learn to fucking read and then wrecks his own installation as a consequence.
If you know how to think critically, or are willing to learn, it's fine.
Still, you're right. Pretty damn ironic to be saying something else doesn't work and therefore you'd rather use... something else that doesn't work and which you have less control over or ability to fix.

having a really bad time with the proliant server I arguably bought way to cheap, kept freezing couldnt figure out what it was. hoping to 'fix' it with finding another board that supports this awful raid controller, power supply, memory and everying else didnt seem to be at fault.
turns out HP isnt the best enterpirse hardware experience.

now ordered some supermicro boards in the hope they'll treat me better. see the current everything is falling appart setup:
Attached Image
the shitty mini itx board on the right is what I'm using as backup to at least run some services while the main raid and server is down.

makes me think whats the point of all the enterprise hardware if its less reliable than the consumer grade junk I was using beore

Most humourous newsletter from Windscribe yet.

QUOTE
Well, it has finally happened. For the first time in our history, we have made a decision that has upset some people. This has definitely never happened before. Last week, we announced we would be deprecating the early Lifetime 50/60 GB plans. We are now restoring those Big Gig data members to their original sensual luster…for now. We can do that because we never called "no backsies” when we made our Big Gig downgrade statement to our free users. However, in order to cover our meticulously sculpted butts in the future, we hired some extras that played lawyers on the hit TV show/legal drama Suits to review our previous downgrade statements and guide us forward. They told us that in a TV court of law, saying something on Reddit 7 years ago could hold us TV-law-show-accountable for using the word "lifetime."

You see, we never specified whose lifetime when we made our statements. We apologize for our oversight, and deserve to be spanked just gently enough not to break skin. You deserve justice for this despicable blunder and we also don’t want to go to TV jail. The beds there look uncomfortable and TV tells us that everyone there gets stabbed in the butt. With knives… or worse. So we are revising our original changes, as to avoid prosecution in a television court of law.

1. When we said lifetime of free bandwidth, we meant President Putin’s lifetime.
2. We are restoring all of your early 50/60 GB plans to their original sexiness, for fairness. That’s right, you will all be re-upgraded from the downgrade of your previous upgrade.
3. We are still going to downgrade these free 50/60 GB lifetime plans, but only when Vladimir Putin aka Putler aka Senator PalPutin dies.
4. Yes we are serious. When Putin dies, all Big Gig plans will be downgraded. It could be tomorrow, it could be in 20 years. We don’t know and neither do you.
5. Your new conundrum is that if you want your Big Gig plan to last longer, you will have to actively try to keep Putin alive. The sooner he dies, the sooner you lose the plan. That’s what we in the business call a "quandary”.
6. We know this downgrade will still upset you, but at least when it happens you can be happy Putin is dead. At the end of the day we are a self-funded business and we need money to hire more people to make our vision come true. We tried training mice to manage our infrastructure, as they don’t require paychecks or have bank accounts, but the mice ended up demanding more pay than our human employees.
7. In the future, all "lifetime” statements (if there are any) aimed at free users will be pegged to the existential span of specific people or animals.

I hated windscribe. Worst mistake of my life to try them.

Their support consisted of "go into our "app" and do things." (link is to my writeup of my experience with them).

I will never use a vendor-specific "app" for openvpn or wireguard configuration.

Cumcast died again; now doing a SOCKS5 proxy using my phone connected to my only PC with USB3 ports which is then tunneled over the USB (via ADB) and then relayed to other computers on my network using SSH with TCP forwarding.

It's awful.

But even more awful is comcast deciding that the weekend was the best time to break. My only reprieve from bullshit. And specifically saturday, the single best day of the week.

I did fix a playstation in that time - but now that's done and there are people online I was hoping to talk to today since I never have the energy to do fun things with them on weekdays.

That's an ACS V2; I now also have two 1900AC V1's. One of them needs a power brick (which is on the way from Digi-Key). It's kind of hilarious that they (1900AC v1's) need 48W power supplies (12V @4A).

I chose V1's because they have built in fans so I wouldn't need to do this stupid fan hack on them to make them run stably under OpenWRT.

One of the AC V1's is being sent to a friend once I'm done prepping it so they can use it as a VPN gateway behind their horrid "Xfinity gateway" router/modem (and also never have to deal with the stupid comcast "app" ever again for things like port forwarding).

The IoT firmware these things come with is trash, though.

It's been running alright on openwrt for me, some issues with wireless at first but I leave that off anyway these days. pretty happy I managed to set it up as main router behind the dumb isp fibre box instead of what they supplied, just needed to add a vlan and add a PPPoE connection on it for it to work.
how bad is it you need to add that extra fan?

thought/rambling:
in recovering whats left of the server, if anyone is ever interested.
the 6 pin dual fan turbine things in hp servers can be repurposed to work with the more common 4 pin connectors:
CODE

HP 6 pin fans:
pin, color,        desc
1,   orange,       12v
2,   grey/black,   gnd
3,   red,          12v
4,   blue,         tach
5,   white/yellow, pwm
6,   green,        tach

common 4 pin case fans:
pin, color,        desc
1,   blue,         pwm
2,   yellow,       12v
3,   red,          tach
4,   black,        gnd

the 6 pin connector is effectively two fans (front and back of the turbine) with pwm and gnd merged. and you can get away with merging 12v and tach as well to get to the regular 4 pin.
meaning if you pop out 6 and jam it into 4 and 1 into 3 it runs as a regular fan, might have to set the rpm a bit lower as they're quite agressive.

It overheats when I seed torrents and malfunctions; the only way to get it working again in that situation is to let it cool off and turn it back on. That's the ACS, which doesn't have the built in fan like the rev. 1 1900AC does.

I see that you also haven't found a way to disable the LEDs from within OpenWRT.
Mine doesn't need active cooling but i use my server for torrents and stuff. I only needed a high powered router from SQM.
