I usually don't download ISO copies for 3D Blu-rays due to misconception that the video might look wonky on a non-3D display. Only today I learned 3D Blu-rays consists of two identical video streams (for left and right eye view) and I only need to extract one stream during the remuxing process.

Yes, but isn't it an infinite trial still?

the software (winrar) is only free as in free beer and the format is proprietary .

"Free" except not as in freedom.

The decompression code carries a stipulation that the code not be used to reverse engineer the format to create competing archivers (even non-commercial ones), so it is in no sense "free (libre)."

Amazon was going to cull DPreview. Looks like they may have been rescued by another company now though.

Takefile's server sucks. Either that, it failed my downloads at the last minute on purpose in order to force me to buy premium account.

Running Firefox with a lot of tabs on my desktop (nvidia X server) causes me to hit a "Maximum number of clients reached" when trying to spawn an xterm sometimes.

Seems firefox's multi process thing might be doing something fucky with background tabs, maybe?

Also I bought a brand new 12" CRT composite/s-video monitor from 2007. Should be RGB moddable, too.

How many tabs are we talking? Never had that happen to me with 100+ tabs open.

More than 100, fewer than 300.

I blame nvidia and also the very long uptime of my system I guess.

Firefox was probably running for three weeks at least.

Bought a new old stock CRT composite/s-video monitor from 2007.

Planning to RGB mod it sometime soon. You can feed analogue RGB signals in to most newer CRT's via the provisions they make for OSD menus.

I think it should be great.

People say it's a descendant of the Commodore 1702 but I can't find any source for that claim other than the fact that JVC apparently made both. I'm not sure I buy that they're actually related though, based on the ~22 year gap between the two.

My oldest working color CRT is from '87. Takes a while to fully warm up (around half an hour - although five minutes or so is enough to have a nice viewable image) but otherwise it seems like it's doing fine.

So today the CRT that I just said was working fine started doing some 'blinking' along with making noises that make me suspect arcing inside the flyback transformer.

And of course, since it's an Apple IIe composite monitor, there's no part number on the flyback transformer, since Apple wanted you to buy a whole new monitor.

FML.

----

In happier news, I mailed someone a playstation (ps1/psx - one with a modchip installed and the drive tuned up by me), along with burned copies of Symphony of the Night and Breath of Fire IV and a digital controller. They got the box today. Did a phone call with them and I could hear their smile over the phone. Made me feel really nice.

If it's a high pitched whine that's a very common problem with crts of that era.

The only time my tinnitus has been beneficial.

Is this your flyback transformer?

Nope, there is no label on it.

The high pitched whine happened for years (not a 15khz one; slightly lower than that). This is actually 'pop' noises accompanied by momentary flashing or blackouts on the screen.

There were two manufacturers for the IIe composite color monitor, Hitachi and Samsung. Mine's the Hitachi model B version.

I found a part number or two that look physically similar and have the same number of pins, but that means very little for flybacks in my limited experience.

New day, new post.

I had forgotten how much I despised most general purpose file hosting sites.

It's kind of amazing that with Mega, anonfile, and catbox around, there are still new file hosts cropping up with the 'free and incredibly slow/paid and decent speed' business model. It implies there are still people who visit those sites regularly enough that buying 'premium' would be a good investment.

I moved to torrents for everything ages ago; just found an artist that I'm going to have to use some of these file hosts to get content from now, though. Others used those sites to upload them.

Mega blows everything else out of the water speed-wise. I really am not sure how they make money.

Ads? (I have an ad blocker, no idea if they serve ads)

Newer sites tend to have lax rules, thats how they make their money.

Axel (and other multi-part file downloaders) work on anonfile(s) to improve speed. Nice.

Went from 500 KB/s to about 5 or 6 MB/s before I hit the asymptote and adding more threads stopped improving speed.
