QUOTE(255555555 @ Dec 22 2022, 00:02) They are more efficient from a production cost perspective. They kinda match 4000 series efficiency within their power envelope. And the 7900xtx can trade blows with the 4080 except in ray tracing. The only reason they are competitive is because Nvidia raised their prices to the moon and aren't really delivering value. You pay for every percent of performance increase.

I want to try amd because nvidia drivers have been giving me trouble with vulkan and everyone is always saying that amd drivers are so much better (on linux).

Just got some Akira Kurosawa Criterion laserdiscs. ...Now I just need a laserdisc player. It's mostly because AMD doesn't insist on using its own X.org server implementation and all sorts of other annoying, somewhat incompatible stuff. People in general get less attractive as they age and the stupid saying about men aging like fine wine is just wrong. Well in my opinion it's wrong.

It maybe actually pay off in the future, as some parts of the chips, in particular for CPUs, are not scaling at the newest smaller nodes. If they can offload cache to chiplets they can potentially work around the issue. Its more that Nvidia intentionally borked their linux support. I think they got annoyed at people unlocking features that were software locked on older cards or something. Not entirely sure. edit: Oh good, they are putting increasing amounts of nano particles in food for stupid ass reasons. Totally won't backfire like asbestos. Also they have found increasing amounts of micro-plastic particles in rain. This post has been edited by EsotericSatire: Dec 23 2022, 16:14

Nvidia started requiring signed firmware which sabotaged the nouveau project to make better free/open source drivers for their cards from most maxwell cards and up; supposedly this was to stop resellers from flashing modified firmware to cards to make them report themselves as a better model than they actually were.

Yeah I do remember the open source drivers being better than the official for a short while. I think scammers still do find ways to scam on cards though, but I guess its kinda less common and from dodge sellers on foreign sites or wish.com etc. Nvidia does the best scamming on cut down versions of low end cards with no indication on the boxes. Its like they saw the scams and though.. oh thats a good idea. Edit: Interesting about people talking about old Thinkpads being good value now. it looks like chiplets will be the future everywhere, i think nvidia are already planning to go chiplets next gen and intel 15th gen should be using "tiles" as well. I'm also interested in what will come out of this [ videocardz.com] https://videocardz.com/newz/intel-raptor-la...-power-up-to-25QUOTE(EsotericSatire @ Dec 24 2022, 01:08) Edit: Interesting about people talking about old Thinkpads being good value now.
I asked my mom if the IT dept at her job had any laptops or hardware to "get rid of" and they gave her (me) a T480, been my main laptop since. Talk about good value.

I think my second laptop was a thinkpad and lasted ages. Even though quality dropped a bit with the take over, they seem to be good value second hand because they don't have 'gamer' tax. Gaming laptops with similar specs may be 50-100% more expensive. Edit: After Gamers Nexus did a negative review of Intel and their execs a year or so ago, they have been trying to copy all their merc and steal their suppliers. Its kinda weird. Maybe there was a fan that got spurned. This post has been edited by EsotericSatire: Dec 27 2022, 02:41

QUOTE(EsotericSatire @ Dec 23 2022, 22:08) Edit: Interesting about people talking about old Thinkpads being good value now. They are as much as ever, but only if you go back to 2012 and earlier. For a couple models, maybe 2013 if you retrofit a good keyboard from a 2012 model in. Old latitudes are better value typically. Note that I am typing this on a thinkpad x201 tablet right now. You can get good old latitudes for under $100 easily, even on ebay. Core2Duo and newer is all fair game IMO, depending on what kind of graphics support you might need. I adore my Pentium M laptop (Latitude D610), but it is markedly slower than a Core2Duo. Not to mention 32-bit. So Thinkpad T60/X60 series and newer, or Latitude D620/D630/D820/D830, etc. should all be good, as well as any E series latitude. This post has been edited by dragontamer8740: Dec 28 2022, 03:02

Need to look into what the newest 32 bit and serial tough book or similar is.

Does it need to be 32-bit only? CF-53 has a serial port. CF-54 had one optionally. I believe both of those are 64-bit capable. CF-51 is a pentium M, so purely 32-bit, and it comes with serial, parallel ports and two PCMCIA slots. Gigabit ethernet and 802.11abg card. I'd recommend that one. Due to having two PCMCIA slots you should even be able to upgrade it to an 802.11n card. Possibly via miniPCI as well. Also has firewire (IEEE 1394) and a PS/2 port. Or a Dell Latitude D610. Pentium M as well. Not quite as rugged, but still good with a pretty solid body. I'd say it's closer to thinkpad tier, if that's good enough. Actually feels sturdier than my X201 thinkpads do. Make sure it has OEM hinges and not aftermarket ones (which are way too stiff and will eventually make the lid break... you'll know if they're aftermarket by the ridiculous amount of force they require). If you buy a new lid for it, that should come with new OEM hinges already attached. In fact I think I have an extra set of OEM hinges for them that I could send your way. Dell Latitude D630 XFR or ATGD630 are Core 2 Duo, so 64-bit capable, but also have a serial port and firewire. Those ones are fully rugged I think. It's mostly that you are used to windows already, and linux/unix does things very differently. You are judging difficulty by the metric of 'similarity to windows.' Depending on what you want to do it could be easier or harder. If you can write scripts, definitely easier. If you want to run <windows program> rather than find an equivalent, then it'd be harder. If you have specific questions about things you're trying to do, and you can give me some details, then maybe I could help point you in the right direction. I vaguely remember my first encounter with that learning curve coming from a DOS/Windows background. Thought: Glad I finally got "Ultra DMA" working on my old desktop for disk I/O. Got rid of all of the lag I was seeing during video playback on disk accesses (from PIO). Even had an old 80-conductor ribbon from over a decade ago handy still, so I was able to replace the 40 conductor ribbon with that. This post has been edited by dragontamer8740: Dec 31 2022, 01:19

I think it has to be 32 bit to support 16 bit programs for some windows reason. I can't recall why that reason is though.
It doesn't need any form of networking, as it'll be kept air gapped.
Just need serial with proper voltage levels and handshaking, usb, and pretty stout build.
My 10.3" CF-18 is miserable to work on and a potato.

You can install 32 bit windows on an amd64 architecture computer and that will run 16 bit programs. NTVDM is only packaged with 32-bit windows.

The vendor AMD used for the vapor chambers for their newest cards screwed up or the vapor chamber was insufficient for their design.
Many users are getting the dryout effect, where the vapor chamber stops working
