That's odd, because 4090 is even worse at RRP.

Its not completely irrational. The 4090 has a 30% increase in relative price to performance to the 3090ti (at 4k).
Below 4k the benefit drops off rapidly. They consumed most of the value with a price increase with some tech magic frame generation to trick people to think ti was okay. Its not great value.

The 1000 and 3000 series at least had some value added (at least at the RRP) before the prices shot to the moon.

The 4080 however is a 1% increase in price for every 1% increase in relative performance. Its complete shit value. There is no relative price to performance gain. The die is cut down so much it would be a 4070 in previous years, but they use frame generation BS to pump the price.

Nvidia shat on frame generation for years when AMD did it and claimed it wasn't real performance and a problem for the industry.... but now they use it to pump the price people are supposed to love it.

Why do people want more frames? To reduce latency but frame generation introduces rubbish graphical artifacts and latency.

Nvidia: High frame rates were kinda BS anyway, you can't really notice the difference with generated frames trololol.

Its like shitting on the whole premise of why we need higher resolution and higher frame rate to begin with. If its bs we can't notice, then why even buy newer graphics cards. They are shooting themselves in the foot.

Yesss. The karma. The 4080 initially sold out... but it was mainly scalpers... On Ebay scalpers have only moved 8% of the scalped cards.

Gamers: Its shit at the RRP, why would be pay the scalped price.
So scalpers are getting hosed. Nice. Unfortunately they still made loads on the 4090 but losing big on the 4080 is good.

yeap feels great when consumers vote with their wallet. The message goes clearly to the greedy corporate and scalpers. I mean what were they thinking it 2020-2021 ? Crypto Booming and global shortages still going on and people will pay absurd prices in 2022 ? lol

Even though I don't agree with 4090 price but understand why it cost a lot since its the latest and greatest GPU in the world at the moment performance wise 2x times 3090 and all the hype but 4080 is a JOKE price to performance ratio is absolute JOKE.

You're so close to reaching enlightenment.

Just stop buying them.

You definitely aren't noticing the latency difference between 60fps and 120fps. You may notice smoothness or something, but I can't say I do.

I think there was an interview of me when I was top gamer for a while ages back, where I said that higher stable FPS makes a difference in first person shooters at the very highest level when you are competing with people in the domain of hundredths of a second to come out on top otherwise it was a fad.

edit: Mercedes is going to add a subscription service for unlocking the torque vectoring and full speed. So they are nerfing the EVs unless you pay the 1200 USD subscription fee. These subscription models are super BS.

You will own nothing.

I hate renting, I hate paying interest, I hate subscription fees. I hate cloud software.

Middle click on my mouse went funky again.
It was double-clicking most of the time again.
I disabled the workaround (and the click, supposedly) in G HUB, and it seems to fix it.
Maybe the OS ignored the mouse software and enforced the click, thus cutting it in the software fix it.
Weird garbage.
But at least, it seems to be working for now.

if the seller replies, I think I've just scored a Panasonic 50" 1080p plasma (TH-50PZ800U) for just over $100.

My parents have that exact model.

It's a 2008 model rather than a later one, unfortunately... but it should still be nice. Can't find newer ones of the same "trim level" and size My parents still have theirs.

I was hoping to acquire their set, but they just informed me of their plans to move theirs to the basement... so not giving it to me after all.

Yeah I gave up on the plasmas because the later models I wanted were selling for too much.

My grandparents have a 2013 or 2014 model in the same 'premium' segment as my parents' '08 one, but they're still using it unfortunately.

Maybe I'll get it some day, regardless. They've been known to splurge on high-dollar items before... although not super frequently.

They were betamax, laserdisc, and trinitron buyers in the 80's. And they opted for an Atari 600XL over a Commodore for their home printing needs. (I mention that because afaict the Atari models were typically higher priced... not because of any inherent quality or lack thereof, although my Commodore experience has been rife with issues).

Today I am planning to try to fix my commodore monitor, which has a trimmer for adjusting pincushion that does not do anything. I've replaced the trimmer, so looking at schematics I am suspecting I have a faulty transistor somewhere.

Knowing me, I won't have the correct spec transistor and will get tired out after desoldering the existing ones to test them and leave it unfinished.

that reminds me I really need to get around to hooking up my scope to one to find out what all these tv specific coupling options amount to.
Months/years later, I have an answer.
"TV Field" triggers on a vsync (vertical sync) pulse, which is significantly more negative than an HSync pulse. It's good for seeing an entire frame draw.

"TV Line" triggers on an hsync pulse, and is a good mode for inspecting an individual scan line's waveform.

Hmm, I read all these tech articles saying that they were releasing new OLED tvs and screens with 0.01ms latency, but they were referring to pixel color response latency not overall screen input latency.

So the oleds are still capping out at min 7ms overall input latency.

I though there was a CRT contender for second but it was marketing.

There will never be a CRT contender for latency unless we get a display technology that draws out pixel by pixel as they come in instead of waiting for a frame buffer to fill and be flushed.

Even then you'd have to send all three subpixels in parallel instead of serial. At 8 bits per channel that'd be 24 parallel wires for each bit of each pixel. Plus grounds.

You can probably get close... the serial to parallel conversion is pretty damn fast. You can get it below milliseconds, I am certain. But you won't actually beat it or even equal it with a serially transmitted signal, and you certainly won't with a full-frame-refresh technology.

BTW, Eso, you remember the calibration thing we were talking about? And how it's probably something you don't notice normally unless you are trained for it?
Here's something you can't unsee. Specifically in the hair.

You do see it, but you're kind of conditioned to accept that that's the way things are so you don't pay attention.

Animated PNG on a two second timer. It's especially noticeable in the dark part of her hair, which looks quite a bit bluer in the uncalibrated picture.
Note that the laptop screen has about 66% sRGB coverage, so it's still not going to be a perfect match with the CRT (P-22 phosphor CRT's are what the sRGB standard was based on).
Also note that this is not just a brightness adjustment. The backlight was left alone (you can see that the black parts of the screen don't look any brighter from bleed-through).
Both were shot in RAW on my DSLR and had the same settings applied to them in darktable. So the white balance is identical between the two shots.
[files.catbox.moe] (IMG:[files.catbox.moe] https://files.catbox.moe/7p7qry.png)

The same images in static form:
[files.catbox.moe] https://files.catbox.moe/souiig.jpg
[files.catbox.moe] https://files.catbox.moe/j6bzs2.jpg

Making a 3D lookup table in a format that works in retroarch (as a "reshade" GLSL shader texture) is quite annoying, but once you figure it out it's not that bad. I wrote a python program to make it easier for me in the future.
------
This came up because I replaced the LCD in this laptop yesterday. The one that had been in it had some weird burn in pattern on it (I think it was burn in, at least) and a pressure spot. Took the opportunity to change to the other manufacturer of panel for this laptop (there were two vendors; Quanta and Samsung).

For just the gamut coverage improvement, it wasn't really worth it, but at $20 to remove the pressure marks and get a fresh CCFL tube from a totally unused panel, I'm pretty happy.
(IMG:[i.imgur.com] https://i.imgur.com/GaIuEQ1.png)

It's much, much better than trying to replace the LCD in a thinkpad of the same vintage... a basic screen might run you $100 or more. Although there were "flexview" (IPS) thinkpads (the display upgrade was done at purchase) around this time that had superior gamuts to this one.

If you want to find out who in a room uses Pale Moon, all you have to do is recommend Seamonkey to someone who asked you and wait for them to waddle up to interrupt your conversation and start deriding your choice, even as they foam at the mouth about their favorite browser that is developed by a furry (Moonchild) - and formerly by a professional internet asshole (Tobin), before he threw a shit fit and wrecked as much project infrastructure as he could on the way out the door.

I only mention the 'furry' thing because the palemoon people really do seem to conduct themselves rather childishly compared to what I've experienced in my encounters with seamonkey people. If they're going to do ad hominems, I can too.

You can try to explain that Seamonkey is a pretty good browser, does most of the same stuff pale moon does, and that it's okay if they like pale moon but that you don't like the project leadership or community. It won't matter.

You can try to explain that there are 13 primary developers of seamonkey, that it's based on a newer version of the Mozilla codebase than palemoon, that several of the developers are retired IBMers who are just using this as something to keep them busy (while being far more professional and friendly on IRC, in my experience). Or that you like seamonkey's built in email client/newsgroup reader. Or that it can use almost any addon palemoon can. But none of that will matter.

Just had this experience. They were laughing at me for recommending an older version of seamonkey that was released three years ago as a good browser to use if you're still running WinXP - completely ignoring the fact that XP is old enough to drink in the United States now.

And then they unironically recommended me some chinese-made closed-source web browser that's a modification of Internet Explorer as an alternative to both palemoon and seamonkey. Fucking dipshit.

Also apologies to people on this board who use Pale Moon. You might not personally be assholes.
...But too many of your peers are.
QUOTE

Why on earth would I ever recommend a Chrome variant, though?

That'd never happen.

Though you are right that all the chrome users think they're different because of the different lipstick on their copy of Chrome.
