The 'ionic breeze' things spewed ozone, and were more ozone than ion generators. If you can smell ozone in the room, you have too much

yeah those are actually ozone generators, an easy way to check if you can see the corona discharge in a dark room. if its very trace amounts (like the carbon fiber bristles on what i posted), it wont do much. if its glowing purple/blue like those plates or spikes its just producing ozone.

great for freshening up the car though(or mice filled attic), let that sit for half an hour with everything closed, air it out, good as new. have one of the small 12v plate units for that

The ionizer in question that now makes noise, and the other one.

The protoboard has a 1M resistor in series with each module, a 100K for the neon, and a 1M discharge for the filter board. The green capacitors in the big one are power factor correction, and the box is a potted 26 stage multiplier, with 3x 1M5 in series with it's ouput and 1M across it's input. I have further pics if anybody is interested.

I would pay good money for a PCIe card that just had slots for a fuckton of RAM on it. Even if I couldn't get the same speeds as with sockets on the motherboard.

I'd like it if I could either use it as additional main system memory or else use it as a huge ramdisk to seed smaller torrents from (use a script to copy files to ramdisk when client launches, and then seed from the ramdisk to avoid HDD thrashing).

Would also be handy for audio editing on long recordings at high sample rates.

Damn it, Firefox closed without warning or giving me a chance to prevent it.
It had not happened for a while.
I tried to look into a recent solution, but instead I found a dev going "*whine* *whine* making a new modal window is too much work *whine*".
With that anti-user-friendliness attitude, he should go work on Windows 11 instead (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

They exist, but they are obsolete. They could be used as a ram disk or for a page file. Some had battery backup. Due to latency m.2 expansion pcie cards are better though more costly.

The old cheap ones are pci.

I just made a single shitpost on reddit to karma farm using an old alt account I created years ago and forgot about so that I could post stuff without cooldowns.

That post got four times as much karma as my previous record on my primary account for a single post. I know karma's just fake internet points, but I'm still a little pissed, not gonna lie.

Literally no hardware that I own has m.2 slots, though. So they might as well not exist.

I do still have two conventional PCI slots on my current motherboard, however, so maybe. Would just be cool if such a thing existed in expresscard form factor or such for laptops since I could set up virtual memory mapped to a ramdisk that way and effectively get more RAM than the motherboard supports (albeit "slow RAM").

Suddenly been getting cloudflare captchas today. Probably on a crowded vpn server or something. Still, not liking it and hoping this isn't a permanent "feature."

I think my old IBM servers' hardware RAID controller had something like that in case of power failures. Not on a PCI slot physically, though. Of course the battery swelled and stopped working, so it didn't end up helping me much.

Can't even `wget` my profile picture anymore without dumping a bunch of cookies because of the cloudflare thing. Ugh.
At least the API didn't get wrecked (I can still grab tags with a program I made a while back).

Looooooool at cloudlare using the CIFAR dataset. The car/ship/plane problem is the one that has the most off-the-shelf solutions - they probably gave the captcha making to the intern.

Give a try changing the user agent - bump the Mozilla version to somewhere in the 70s of 80s - as strange as that may be it works for me on a few different places of cloudflare stupidity.

They're using someone else's service - I've seen it a couple other places that don't want to use the Google reCaptcha (which I hate far more than this one).

Nope. Only thing that works is answering the captcha in a browser and then using the cookie obtained from that.

Good thought, since I do have seamonkey reporting Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:60.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/60.0 SeaMonkey/2.53.7 right now. Firefox 89 has the same issue though.

I just spent an hour and a half fighting with a small C program I wrote in GTK. I wrote it a year ago, and had to change something about its behavior today.
Basically, it's a units converter, and I wanted to make it display feet and inches instead of just fractional feet in the result area).
So anyway i had to do some additional snprintf() magic to display the results. I knew either had a memory leak or double-free() happening somewhere, since it was crashing pretty reliably when entering numbers.

…Turns out it was actually a buffer overrun. I just wasn't malloc'ing one additional byte for a string null terminator. I just wonder why it wasn't happening before, but now it's not crashing and Valgrind's happier, too, so I'm not going to think too much harder about it.

Valgrind isn't truly happy, though, because GTK explicitly does not appear to free all the memory it allocates. It seems to depend on the MMU cleaning up after it.

To be fair, yeah, I can imagine that managing memory manually in threaded applications is a huge pain and basically necessitates implementing garbage collection. But it still feels wrong.

since you mentioned vpn, no amount of ip changing is probably going to help within their block, but once every blue moon I run into this until I reroll my ip

I usually have more luck with -fsanitize=address or even -fsanitize=leak to weed out cases where I overwrite nulls or go out of bounds, with leak it even (tries to) achieve decent results with multithread specific issues. while valgrind is never truly happy with anything I make the sanitizers can eventually agree its as good as it gets, even when you use gtk or some other awful library thats impossible to get completely sane.
reminds me of something where I just used glib-dbus it'd always leave a couple kb behind every time you remake a connection.

Yeah, hate GTK more and more every year.

My newer projects tend to use FLTK instead. It has its own problems but it at least seems relatively sane.

personally continuing my quest to avoid gui programming at all cost.
though that said even ncurses has its own bits of horribleness, including lack of any and all thread safety

That is of course my favourite solution, when viable.

"Just don't use threads, then, lol."

But I am really struggling to think of when I'd be using curses in a threaded program. Do you have any examples of software that does this?

Also, I do enjoy curses programming, relative to many other libraries. I designed a curses frontend when I was making upgrades to a chiptune player from the early 2000's (after migrating it to ALSA).

I have never looked at the code but I imagine that wicd-curses must be a nightmare. You get the network back in a background thread so you do not freeze the "gui", but the you need to communicate with the display thread to inform it when the network returns. Add timeouts and SSID scans to it and you have the perfect storm.

Crap, i forgot about wicd-curses. Good point about not freezing the UI. I bet deluge's curses client is similar.

I undeestanding coding conceptually, and was getting my feet wet with basic at one point (Yeah, I know.), but trying to do it for any length of time just nakes my eyes cross.
I've programmed PLCs in ladder logic, but that's bascially an emulator for hardware. The last project I did on one, a gray code counter that counts up and down, I was starting to get fancier with flow control- using the states of I/O terminals that didn't physically exist as status flags, and having large blocks of logic controlled by them to add different modes.
The PLC already abstracts some things like time delay on, time delay off, and recycle timers. I do not recall if it had an alternating relay function.
I suppose I think more visually.
Edit: damn you, phone keyboard.
