I think they did it this way more than a decade ago, but it created a big mess back then. It might not even have been freenode, it may have been another server and then everyone migrated to freenode. I can't remember exactly.
You're not thinking of EFNet/IRCNet and the great split? In the early 90's?
There's still one server running the old IRCd and it's kind of interesting what happaned there. People are just basically waiting for Andrew Lee to kill the node and the ##apocalypse channel's been full of spam all evening since someone /op'ed everyone in the channel.
Meanwhile, I drew a picture on my amiga. Re: flags on the right, They've been spamming those particular flags in chat on and off all night. Just like everything else there.
And a bad portrait of al capone i doodled, you can't really tell it's him.
P.S. Someone else (selicre) also drew a doodle; I was "CompuServ" in this pic. Services weren't running, so someone else got NickServ and someone else got ChanServ, leaving me having to choose a different handle.

Speaking of the 90's, I tried writing a tiny program in the Motif toolkit today.
Gave up on it. The documentation is bad, and small, simple examples nearly non-existant. Additionally, it feels uncannily like programming in pure Xlib, which is pretty horrifying.
I specifically gave up when I couldn't find good examples of people laying out widgets with the "BulletinBoard" layout manager.

Windows 11 launching? They barely got windows 10 working.
edit: People reviewing the leaked dev build are saying that it is literally windows 10 with a new UI. Its free, BUT you have to pay to be able to make it look like traditional windows.
Reminds me of the 8.1 bs. Windows 10 does not require a windows account but to make use of all the features you need a windows account for 11.
bleh.
edit:
Windows 11 leaks....
Microsoft: We will do it live, DO IT LIVE. We will do it LIVE !FUCK IT. Fucking thing sucks.

So they decided to break user expectations once again, nice. Not surprised anymore; windows hasn't had a relatively stable UI between versions since 7 (Vista, XP could still be made to behave like 95).

Can you link to where it says you're gonna need to pay to make Windows 11 actually usable? I believe you, I just want to be able to cite my source if I refer to it. Also, is this just paying to reskin it/put lipstick on the pig? Or are they finally locking the ability to use unsigned apps and real win32 programs behind a paywall in favor of UWP/Metro from the "app store" only?

The "cloud"/IoT/software as a service mentality (and more accurately, the people who are actually stupid enough to accept it) make me worry for the future. So many people are so fucking goddamn stupid/willfully ignorant.
Like I said, If you use modern Windows, you can no longer even claim to own the hardware you pay for.

Reviews are all over the place.
Functionality reviewed at from 6:00 onwards.
-Store is more integrated but at least in this early build looks like you can install win32 programs independently. There are lot of pre-installed rubbish being pushed. -Its some of the personalise functions are behind a registration / paywall 9:30. Classic functions are premium? - Widgets are back, but full functionality requires sign in. -15:00 windows security tried to get in the way of running older programs. Glitch or feature?
Other reviews are talking about features but not indicating whether it requires paid registration / or windows account authentication.
Ah, well I usually use a prime lens or a relatively standard kit zoom lens.
On another note, I noticed my USB keyboard gets quite warm when in use. It's got one chip on the controller board - a Cypress CY8C24493.
Trying to figure out why the hell it runs so hot, but the datasheet for it is massive.
It is hot to the touch(!) after around 10 or 15 minutes of use, and it additionally creates a noticeable warm patch on the underside of the keyboard case.
This is a modern-ish 7mm x 7mm chip being run off USB power. So I really would rather not have it guzzle more current than an IBM AT keyboard from the 80's.
