Tried to make a new x265 encode of a 1080p 1995 movie with strong grains throughout the whole scenes. First attempt resulted in a video with a final bitrate of 20+mbps by utilizing RF=23. Way too high. In my second attempt I used 2-Pass ABR in order to target that 3.4GB max file size. The result was a final video bitrate of 15mbps. It was way off. Other than the bitrate control, I used the exact same parameters at both times - Main 10 Profile, custom Slow Preset: QUOTE cpuid=1111039 / frame-threads=4 / wpp / no-pmode / no-pme / no-psnr / no-ssim / log-level=2 / input-csp=1 / input-res=1920x1036 / interlace=0 / total-frames=0 / level-idc=0 / high-tier=1 / uhd-bd=0 / ref=6 / no-allow-non-conformance / no-repeat-headers / annexb / no-aud / no-hrd / info / hash=0 / no-temporal-layers / open-gop / min-keyint=23 / keyint=239 / gop-lookahead=0 / bframes=8 / b-adapt=2 / b-pyramid / bframe-bias=0 / rc-lookahead=30 / lookahead-slices=4 / scenecut=40 / hist-scenecut=0 / radl=0 / no-splice / no-intra-refresh / ctu=64 / min-cu-size=8 / rect / no-amp / max-tu-size=32 / tu-inter-depth=1 / tu-intra-depth=1 / limit-tu=0 / rdoq-level=2 / dynamic-rd=0.00 / no-ssim-rd / signhide / no-tskip / nr-intra=0 / nr-inter=0 / no-constrained-intra / strong-intra-smoothing / max-merge=2 / limit-refs=3 / limit-modes / me=3 / subme=3 / merange=57 / temporal-mvp / no-frame-dup / no-hme / weightp / no-weightb / no-analyze-src-pics / deblock=0:0 / sao / no-sao-non-deblock / rd=5 / selective-sao=2 / no-early-skip / rskip / no-fast-intra / no-tskip-fast / no-cu-lossless / no-b-intra / no-splitrd-skip / rdpenalty=0 / psy-rd=2.00 / psy-rdoq=1.00 / no-rd-refine / no-lossless / cbqpoffs=0 / crqpoffs=0 / rc=abr / bitrate=4600 / qcomp=0.60 / qpstep=4 / stats-write=0 / stats-read=2 / cplxblur=20.0 / qblur=0.5 / ipratio=1.40 / pbratio=1.00 / aq-mode=3 / aq-strength=1.00 / cutree / zone-count=0 / no-strict-cbr / qg-size=64 / no-rc-grain / qpmax=30 / qpmin=0 / no-const-vbv / sar=255 / sar-width / : / sar-height=36001:36000 / overscan=0 / videoformat=5 / range=0 / colorprim=2 / transfer=2 / colormatrix=2 / chromaloc=0 / display-window=0 / cll=0,0 / min-luma=0 / max-luma=1023 / log2-max-poc-lsb=8 / vui-timing-info / vui-hrd-info / slices=1 / no-opt-qp-pps / no-opt-ref-list-length-pps / no-multi-pass-opt-rps / scenecut-bias=0.05 / hist-threshold=0.01 / no-opt-cu-delta-qp / no-aq-motion / no-hdr10 / no-hdr10-opt / no-dhdr10-opt / no-idr-recovery-sei / analysis-reuse-level=5 / analysis-save-reuse-level=0 / analysis-load-reuse-level=0 / scale-factor=0 / refine-intra=0 / refine-inter=0 / refine-mv=1 / refine-ctu-distortion=0 / limit-sao / ctu-info=0 / no-lowpass-dct / refine-analysis-type=0 / copy-pic=1 / max-ausize-factor=1.0 / no-dynamic-refine / no-single-sei / no-hevc-aq / no-svt / no-field / qp-adaptation-range=1.00 / scenecut-aware-qp=0conformance-window-offsets / right=0 / bottom=0 / decoder-max-rate=0 / no-vbv-live-multi-pass These are the settings I used for the old encode I made last year - Main 10 profile, Medium Preset: QUOTE cpuid=1111039 / frame-threads=4 / numa-pools=16 / wpp / no-pmode / no-pme / no-psnr / no-ssim / log-level=2 / input-csp=1 / input-res=1920x1036 / interlace=0 / total-frames=0 / level-idc=41 / high-tier=1 / uhd-bd=0 / ref=3 / no-allow-non-conformance / no-repeat-headers / annexb / no-aud / no-hrd / info / hash=0 / no-temporal-layers / open-gop / min-keyint=24 / keyint=240 / gop-lookahead=0 / bframes=4 / b-adapt=2 / b-pyramid / bframe-bias=0 / rc-lookahead=20 / lookahead-slices=6 / scenecut=40 / radl=0 / no-splice / no-intra-refresh / ctu=64 / min-cu-size=8 / no-rect / no-amp / max-tu-size=32 / tu-inter-depth=1 / tu-intra-depth=1 / limit-tu=0 / rdoq-level=0 / dynamic-rd=0.00 / no-ssim-rd / signhide / no-tskip / nr-intra=0 / nr-inter=0 / no-constrained-intra / strong-intra-smoothing / max-merge=3 / limit-refs=1 / no-limit-modes / me=1 / subme=2 / merange=57 / temporal-mvp / no-hme / weightp / no-weightb / no-analyze-src-pics / deblock=0:0 / sao / no-sao-non-deblock / rd=3 / selective-sao=4 / early-skip / rskip / no-fast-intra / no-tskip-fast / no-cu-lossless / b-intra / no-splitrd-skip / rdpenalty=0 / psy-rd=2.00 / psy-rdoq=0.00 / no-rd-refine / no-lossless / cbqpoffs=0 / crqpoffs=0 / rc=abr / bitrate=4000 / qcomp=0.60 / qpstep=4 / stats-write=0 / stats-read=2 / cplxblur=20.0 / qblur=0.5 / ipratio=1.40 / pbratio=1.30 / aq-mode=2 / aq-strength=1.00 / cutree / zone-count=0 / no-strict-cbr / qg-size=32 / no-rc-grain / qpmax=69 / qpmin=0 / no-const-vbv / sar=1 / overscan=0 / videoformat=5 / range=0 / colorprim=1 / transfer=1 / colormatrix=1 / chromaloc=0 / display-window=0 / cll=0,0 / min-luma=0 / max-luma=1023 / log2-max-poc-lsb=8 / vui-timing-info / vui-hrd-info / slices=1 / no-opt-qp-pps / no-opt-ref-list-length-pps / no-multi-pass-opt-rps / scenecut-bias=0.05 / no-opt-cu-delta-qp / no-aq-motion / no-hdr / no-hdr-opt / no-dhdr10-opt / no-idr-recovery-sei / analysis-reuse-level=5 / scale-factor=0 / refine-intra=0 / refine-inter=0 / refine-mv=1 / refine-ctu-distortion=0 / no-limit-sao / ctu-info=0 / no-lowpass-dct / refine-analysis-type=0 / copy-pic=1 / max-ausize-factor=1.0 / no-dynamic-refine / no-single-sei / no-hevc-aq / no-svt / no-field / qp-adaptation-range=1.0 What could be the cause of the bitrate spike in ABR mode? Did somebody say bodge switch? It disconnects the ring of the 1/4" TRS jack to it's left to allow use with a mono plug. Said contact happened to run through a jumper before hitting the logic IC, so I cut the jumper and soldered the switch wires across. Switch is in an inexplicable factory hole in the case. quality job, I saw those on/off label rings too when bulk ordering the switches but the deals were worse for them at the time.

I have relatively few bodge switches of that sort on my gear. Mostly I just break things out to RCA jacks and then use RCA cables as patch cords/external jumpers, since I have a lot of panel mount RCA jacks floating around. I use them for stuff like exposing the pre-amp outputs inside stereo amps.

Damn, I spent the rest of my morning making a program to merge subtitles lines happening at the same time. I can't believe that garbage program Aegissub can't do something so obvious...why am I keeping that damn thing already? (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

(IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) Can't you edit the raw subtitle file? (Its been more than a decade since I did subtitling so i can't remember exactly how we fixed that)

Assuming it's an SRT or SSA subtitle then yeah

If you had the right software you could also edit / convert the image based subtitle formats too I think. Not sure what the current state of subtitling tech is. A lot better when you had to use the hardware based solutions though.

Some simple regex or delete dupe lines in notepad++ is possible.
Aegissub is for signs mostly.

(Its been more than a decade since I did subtitling so i can't remember exactly how we fixed that) I think the amount of changes to do (I put a counter in my program, but didn't write down the result) may have reached the thousand, hence why the manual editing was given up. As for regex, the trick is that I need to replace "constant line beginning" + "timecode" + "irrelevant data" + "subtitle1" + "line end" + "constant line beginning" + "same timecode as earlier, whatever it was" + "irrelevant data" + "subtitle2" + "line end" by "constant line beginning" + "timecode" + "irrelevant data" + "subtitle1" + subtitle2" + "line end". Regex give me headaches, so I can't tell at 100% it's impossible to process that logic, but it's not like there's any helpful information out there on the web (people asking about this stuff usually just get some nonsensical big line of esoteric characters dumped on them without explanation)

sounds like something a pile of shellscript couldve done, or as you mentioned one abysmal line of regex (pretty sure its turing complete at this point) my memory of srt is that it's fairly straight forward at least, though I can see some data getting lost converting to srt because its so simple and barebones with what info it can define.

The Amiga and MSX made great subtitler machines, if you had genlocking. Thought: Got the new powerbook charger today. TIL there's supposed to be two LED's in there (green and red) and not just a green one. It should light up the red and green LED's together when charging and switch to green when full. My old one just showed green always. Guess it was more broken than I thought.

Got some drawer thingies at harbor freight. Trying to organuze my parts into them in a sensible way. Might stop at a craft store tomorrow and get some of those bead bags to group identical things I have a lot of, or values.

Wish I'd taken the plunge on this charger ages ago. So nice to not have to fight with my charger constantly to keep my machine powered. And it might just be me, but it feels like the laptop might even be running cooler/quieter, somehow. Not really sure why that would be though. In any event, I'm quite pleased.

Why is it so hard to find a good microwave?
All the models with the features I like seem to have durability issues. I'd like one to last 5+ years, hopefully 10 years, but most seem to be averaging 2 years or less.
No wonder they recommend buying the garbo generic ones for 1/2 to 1/3 the price, at least then you don't care if it dies I guess. The cheap Kmart ones seem to be using tech from a decade ago but the price is 1/3 of the big brands.
It seems that two major Chinese manufactures make the majority of microwaves these days.
Only the higher end Panasonic / LG / Samsung are still made in Japan / Korea.
edit: I just read that the body could be listed as made in Japan but the main components still made in china XD.
I don't particularly care if its made in China if it is quality but seems that quality and durability of all microwaves has declined recently.

Look at a food service store and get a commercial-grade microwave?

I have a 800 watt US made one from 20+ years ago, still works fine except it doesn't spin so it's not efficient.
