Microsoft Flight Simulator X crashes too, but in a different way. I can het to settings menus, select an aircraft and spawn location, but it just hangs when it goes to actually load the game proper. 2020 dumps me back to seam before I get that far.

Wow, last time I heard about a flight simulator was in something about one being hidden in a version of Microsoft Excel (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

People keep posting Twitter links as though you can view them. They now show nothing without Javascript enabled, and I don't feel like letting them run it. Fortunately, there is a solution: [nitter.net] https://nitter.net/about

Replace [twitter.com] https://twitter.com with [nitter.net] https://nitter.net in the URL, and they scrape it for you, no shitvascript required.

Nice; they discontinued the ancient mobile site last week so I was wondering how best to deal with that.

I got FSX to work, which is good because I already have all the flight sim hardware. Yoke, throttles, rudder pedals, and headset interface- I can use that bit for other stuff despite it being geared for aviation headsets and flight simulators. I already had a couple aviation headsets unrelated to flight sims.

I think MSFS 2020 would work now, but discovered another huge caveat. Despite logging in with steam, and even if I bought the retail version w/ disks, I'd still need to log into my non-extant microsoft account to play it.

I used to play MSFS 2002 back in the day with a cheap non-feedback joystick, and I seem to remember it being easier. Maybe the yoke has a steeper learning curve, and the game had lots of assitance. More realistic physics and assitance that is now off because I have actual inputs for rudder, brakes, throttle, engine mixture, and flaps, so I must manage all of these things manually.

My initial flights sum up steam edition pretty well: I spawned on at an international airport's GA ramp at night, in an Extra 300S. I took offf from a taxiway, and did some acrobatics- then entered an inverted flat spin and yeeted into a house. Shouting "Mayday mayday mayday! 7700!" into my headset (this was also single player) did not help me regain flight controls. Next flight was a trike ultralight in one of the tutorial missions, which I then proceeded to lawn dart back into the runway. It spawned me on the active at Edwards Airforce Base, and mentioned it was the longest extant runway. I still fucked it up multiple times.

As for what was broken, it turns out auto-update only ignores my registry and group policies sometimes. So I still had a very out of date system that regularly broke stuff and restarted itself. Fukken worst of both worlds. The updates also shiehorned a web browser, which wasn't the easiest thing to remove.

Told someone that got locked out of their Linux machine to boot with init=/bin/sh, remount as read-write, and run passwd to change their user password.

They just replied that it started to work but then got stuck on a screen saying "sh-3.1#".

I am at a loss for words.

I am surprised how many people can't build their own computers now.

Its easier than it used to be but people seem less able.

It was hard to be a gamer in the past without building your own computers because you would have to pay so much for a system builder or branded version.

I don't think I would be able to do all the stuff in the first paragraph without having the knowledge to handle what's in the 2nd.
But maybe that's because I'm from the generation MS-DOS (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

Just got a Pixel 4. Pretty annoying to root and set up new phones. I really don't like doing it.

Also I miss my stupid fingerprint reader thingy. But PIN's are sort of secure anyway so I shouldn't complain. I refuse to use face recognition.

Lightning reply.
Eh, the Pixel 4 was pretty easy to root, the more annoying thing is that when you unlock the bootloader you have to erase your phone's storage. I'd set most everything up before unlocking the BL so I had to do it all over again.

Most other phones, yeah, harder and harder to root. The same thing happened with my Nexus 6 though so I really should have expected this (the erasure).

I miss phones with non-rounded screen corners (yeah I know why they do it, but I still don't like it).

So much Google garbage to turn off, too.

I'm mostly referring to dodging google garbage, installing all the apps you like, getting termux feeling somewhat comfy, etc.. I had a Debian chroot on my old phone that I'll have to set up here as well.

I use old versions of several apps, and have custom builds of one or two as well (and I no longer have the tools installed to rebuild them from sources), so it's kind of an ordeal to find and sideload all of them in. And then I have to get ublock origin, my user scripts, etc. in my firefox install (I use an old version of nightly from before they rewrote most of it, but I'll likely upgrade at some point). I also use a custom user agent (via general.useragent.override) so it uses mostly desktop sites, and have several other about:config tweaks I have to remember, like one to change the download location.

And there's also remembering how to install ringtones and stuff (I use a custom alarm tune).

Spent literally all day today upgrading my car. Added seat heaters, replaced the door cards the last owner fucked up (substituting the much classier mid-80's ones for my early 90's ones), installed some nice speakers hidden behind the OEM grilles. Made the passenger side seat height adjustable with a lever like the driver side is (using the mechanism from a parts car's drivers' side door). Replaced all the foam in the drivers seat while I had it apart, too, using donor foam from the parts car's passenger seat. Fixed lumbar support.

Now I want to curl up and die, but at least my car feels better now.

Got 3 new keycaps for keyboard. A red doubleshot molded (like the oem black keys) ESC, and two printed Ubuntu logo caps for the super keys.

WASD keyboards also had XFCE, Debian, Arch, Amiga, Commodore, generic linux/Tux, and possibly others. I was gonna go with XFCE, but the Ubuntu logo is cleaner, and won't look terrible once it gets some wear.

I wish my "F" and "J" keys had bigger finger nubs. At the bottom of the front of each of those keycaps is a nub that sticks out so that your fingers can feel which are the F and J keys. Ever since I switched to this logitech keyboard because I finally wore out my Microsoft Office keyboard. The logitech keys also don't have deeper concave curves for F/J keys. The deeper curves and the protruding nub made it easier to put my hands into the home position without looking at the keyboard.

Just etch into the key surfaces with a knife, lol.
Or make the bumps bigger by dabbing a little epoxy or super glue on them. I'd say epoxy since super glue tends to leave a white deposit behind.

I don't actually use the nubs for touch-typing, myself; my fingers just know where home row is based on muscle memory, and anyway my old Apple keyboard has nubs on G and K so I'd get thrown off anyway if I tried to look for F and J on it.

Really though, [www.pckeyboard.com] just get a good keyboard already.

Thinking about the Microsoft ergo keyboard. I remember using various IBM keyboards with mechanical springs. It's an interesting feeling have the spring loaded key suddenly go down after an initial resistance. But the noise and amount of energy from the fingertips isn't what I want nowadays. Nor the nearly zero resistance of the IBM Selectric keyboard which I do admit is good for continuous fast typing. But normal keyboards have just enough resistance to allow me to rest my fingers on them without typing. Those spring loaded keyboards at pckeyboard.com would be at one end of the spectrum opposite that of the selectric keyboard.

But any keyboard must group sets of the full-size function keys since I put certain battle or casting sequences upon them. For example, the group of F1 to F4 keys have a blank area between the next group of F5 to F8 keys. Having an empty space between groups of function keys helps me press certain keys better in a surprise panic.

Alright then.
I have an ancient MS natural board here somewhere, too, but I don't really care for it. I agree about separating the F* keys out, it's the most annoying thing about old macbook keyboards for instance.

Attempting to compile my own Android build for the Pixel 4 XL so I can have a -userdebug build and sidestep dm-verity, since I can't find public official userdebug binary images.
Wish me luck; I'll need it.

RIP, storage space.

I like my Cherry keyboard with their MX Black Silent switches, I just wish the keys had shorter travel. I did add o-rings. I'd like a keyboard with laptop stlye scissor keys + everything in a flat plane and 6 key roll over, but cannot find one.
I do like their actuation force, and the travel seems good for gaming, but I don't care for it when typing.
The roll over on my laptop isn't good enough for gaming, ot at least for My Summer Car.
