Trying to select a tail light to stick on the box. I only anticipate using it in daylight and dusk.
I got suggestions for flash modes or brightness settings, but I'm resisting the urge to feature creep something that is in itself an extra.

Antenna sundries are running late, blah.

Found a weather resistant toolbox a good size, and cut a sheet of 25ga copper clad aluminum to line the lid. I need to attach a couple of ground braids, and a reinforcing rib or standoffs, then silicone it into place. Also seems I'll need two mounting brackets. With just the one, the box is effectively cantilevered and wiggles around too much.

Pics incoming when I have something more worthwhile than a pile of parts to photograph.

Alpine edit: Eris damnit, doing two level light. I ended up selected a light that had two levels, so got a SPDT On-Off-On type switch for it.

I am buying specific parts for ITX build, however I estimate shipping and part prices are up 20%. The price for the water cooling loop is like 100% more expensive than my last build six years ago.

Trying to fit everything in the smallest space reduces the part selection, but it seems a lot of people are targeting the bits i am going after.

Jebus, I am way over budget lol.

I have a list of parts on a website shopping cart ready to order but the fucking parts keep changing price drastically every other day.

I kept getting error messages about IP configuration and kept having to reset it with the troubleshooter so I went online looking for a fix and it said to go in the command prompt to reconfigure everything in nerd typing.

I messed something up and had no internet connection and was sweating like a nun in a cucumber patch. The command prompt turned into Windows PowerShell (Admin) and the window was blue instead of black but it looked the same otherwise and I had to go on my cellphone internet to get all the shit to type in there with step by step instructions and thank God it worked and I got back online.

I haven't run into those issues in quite some time, since I use ifconfig and dhclient manually to bring up my network interfaces and therefore have to know everything by heart.

On a different note, I'm still in awe of the quality some of the old Merrie Melodies/Looney Tunes cartoons managed to reach, given the budgets and technologies available at the time. Makes me feel like animators have (for the most part) either just gotten lazy or (more likely) been forced to deal with ridiculous deadlines/budgets compared to what they used to be.

Specifically, I just re-watched "Porky in Wackyland." I have it on one of the "golden collection" DVD's, but it looks to be watchable [criticalcommons.org] here as well.

It's just wildly, wildly creative and surreal in a way I rarely see. I kind of feel like moving to computer animation, while a good time-saver, also has made it more laborious to do some of these wild one-off things that are comparatively easy to do in free-hand.

considered getting that second hand yet? usually the price evaporates when it goes onto the used market. always amazed how much those are marked up when its essentially a radiator, a pump, and some tubes

Yes, but I redid it correctly. Trouble is, I'm still having internet connectivity issues that have to be fixed through the troubleshooter.

There's an entire page dedicated to this shit because Windows 10 sucks that much ass. Worse OS ever.

I thought maybe it was an update that corrupted the internet card but the drivers are up to date. I can't figure out what's causing this all of a sudden. I checked if there was a new Windows update and there was so I installed it but when I shut the computer off or put it to sleep it still can't get back online without the troubleshooter. I just redid the internet password. Seems like nothing is permanently fixing it. We've also been having problems with TV stations not coming in. Our ISP sucks and I don't want to call them.

I just fixed an incompatibility in [www.kairo.at] my seamonkey theme of choice again (EarlyBlue, not LCARS), but then realized while writing this that the author has actually been updating it still and I've just been doing the same damn tweaks to keep it working concurrently with them for at least a year or two since they fell off AMO.

Most recently, all XUL checkboxes disappeared because Mozilla removed an old bit of cruft from their XML bindings.

Glad the original author didn't stop updating it like they claimed they were going to, but I sure wish I'd found out earlier before I started maintaining my own spinoff of an older version.

Three of the icons in the toolbar are for my own custom addons, btw. They basically just change settings and stuff when I click them (toggles). One enables/disables an addon and the others change about:config prefs (something I cannot do with post-57 Firefox). The 'a' turns into an 'あ' when I have set the browser to view pages as shift-JIS when no encoding is specified. the tabs thing just makes new tabs open in the background or foreground depending on the current icon. The last one enables/disables the "inline disposition" extension (which makes attachments try to open in-browser; handy for PDF's and images from some sites as well as C code snippets).

Was just reading [www.c0ffee.net] someone's writeup about OpenBSD, and found this.
QUOTE
The default OpenBSD desktop is an ancient window manager called fvwm. I'm not sure if anyone uses it other than Theo himself. You can find various people online who have made it somewhat usable and not-ugly, but those kind of people enjoy suffering.

I kind of got annoyed by that. I set it up one time and FVWM's been wonderful ever since. I've not been able to find another WM that's so easy to make to do whatever I want (I can make it show or hide window decorations, set keybindings to do pretty much anything, and generate arbitrary menus; it's pretty damn handy).

It's no magical "works out-of-the-box" solution like MATE or GNOME or whatever, but I've come to appreciate its versatility, especially in version 3 which actually supports RANDR. Is it old? Yeah. But it's also good. It can imitate MWM (Motif Window Manager), and then enhance it further, which is pretty much how I use it.

And anyway, yeah, at least one other person besides Theo de Raadt and Thomas Adam (appears to be the current main maintainer) uses it (although OpenBSD does use a pretty old version of it because of licensing changes).

QUOTE
OpenBSD's GTK port is built with the default key theme set to emacs (heresy!)

Ironically, he's just making OpenBSD sound more and more appealing to me.

QUOTE
Unlike fvwm, cwm is a somewhat recent development. It's a simple window manager with a keyboard-focused workflow, perfect for laptops. It's also very easy to learn: the man page is ten times shorter than that of fvwm.

That's because fvwm actually has a very thorough man page that explains how to do a crap-ton of stuff.

Nah custom loop, otherwise I'd just get the best rated non-rgb parts.

Build has a couple of rgb parts but only because they are sticking it on freaking everything.

LOL there are rgb PSU cables rofl.

are you using one of those boards that has an ~rgb connector~ for driving led strips directly or just the generic china variety? also yes rgb has gone way too far.

I'm into cable management as a craftsmanship type deal, as I do electrical for work as well. You can only even see most of the cables with the back side of the chassis open. I used all velcro to allow easy upgrades/swapping. I suppose my routing has a marginal effect on airflow, but that wasn't the goal.
Case has no windows in it. Mobo has RGB, but I disabled that. I added a thermistor and PWM fan to the PSU and let the mobo control it, as the loud stock fan with only on/off control was troublesome.

I got it as best as I could without investing an inordinate amount of time, or customizing cables beyond splitting ribbons to allow them to bend.
And in it's natural habitat:

Today when I turned on the computer, I had no problems getting online. It must've been a bug in an update and the latest one fixed it. I still hate Windows 10. Even Windows Vista was better than this shit.

VISTA is better only if you can also time-travel to back then and use software made back then.

If you tried to use VISTA now, you'd say it was worse. Although there are browser versions that run on Vista, some websites are incompatible with Vista. Those websites refuse to display certain or premium parts without running software on your PC that requires updated or new software code to do things that Vista didn't support such as creation of a mini-database (client side) on your PC to help track what you are doing. This new feature, which VISTA doesn't support, defeats cookie deleters and other similar privacy protection devices. By making it an "essential item" it can't be easily eliminated. And once it exists, it can keep storing more info until the next time you visit that website and it retrieves the data in that database. Various websites and companies developing web standards created things like this. That's what happens when consumers not only allow the Fox to guard the Chickens, but also allow the Fox to write the rules regulating how the Farmer is allowed or not allowed to possess a weapon when visiting the Chicken Coop. It's still the early days, so I wonder what websites will be like 10 years from now with the Fox continually setting the rules and website language standards rather than an independent body appointed by the Farmer.

Anyways, VISTA won't cut it. You can visit websites certainly, but the ones that use advanced methods simply won't let you login, or some forum sites won't let you post, and sites using the new code won't let you purchase any products since they need to access their section of data inside that database on the PC. Eventually, the Fox will feel confident enough that they can throw away win7 users by making code that can only exist in Win10.

Cinnamon? KDE? XFCE? MATE? That reminds me of my old MATE desktop. I liked it, I just find FVWM strangely liberating despite the spartan feel.
Not sure which DE you're using there.
And it's nice to see you're still using that mouse.

Cable "management." I didn't have an extra HDD mounting bracket that came with this case, and the FDD bracket didn't fit an HDD in properly, so I just used screws on that top drive.
The CPU cooler is one of the older Intel stock units that actually had a copper slug in it. It does its job. At about 35°C right now, with torrents running. 69W TDP for the CPU according to Intel (i5-3350p). Yeah, I know the official numbers have only minimal reflection on how hot they usually run.

There's a window on this case because someone who cared more about management was getting a new case for his PC and he gave me the old one. The window faces the wall.

The computer actually is rather quiet (the noise is slightly noticeable, but not unpleasant, and I have the fans just configured to run at constant speeds which means they don't fluctuate and kind of fade into the background). It sounds about the same as the air vents in the room, so it's pretty subtle and unintrusive. The HDD's are far louder; particularly the 15 year old boot drive (but it's always sounded like this). All fans are dual ball bearing, including the one in the PSU which I had to replace a couple years ago (original was a sleeve bearing fan mounted horizontally). PSU is something like 430W, I think; I don't even come close to using that much power so I'm not too worried. I've accidentally left the PSU fan unconnected for days at a time before.

Also you'll notice the rear case fan is mounted using bolts and hex nuts. So is the front case fan. I don't notice much if any noise difference vs. just using rubber mounting pegs.

Just noticed your board still has PCI slots. Nice. Mine does, too, and although there are a couple on the market for Zen 3 that do have conventional PCI, I'm hesitant to upgrade since mine works and has 2 slots (as opposed to one, which is the most I could find on any new board). Also I don't really need more power.

My GPU's in the bottom-most PCIe slot on my board, which is PCIe 2.0 x4, in the x16 form factor. I honestly haven't noticed a performance drop from when it was on the x16 PCIe 3.0 slot, since it's just not a huge card (750 Ti).

I'd like to get a multiple-port NIC card so I can free up one of my conventional PCI slots for my PCI-X SCSI controller. Currently I have two NIC cards (one PCI and one PCIe), plus onboard.

I'd recommend blowing that out, but it's not really any of my business anyway. Guessing it sits on or near the floor based on how much there is. Even before it gets very noticeable in my machine, blowing mine out usually results in me having a coughing fit if I don't wear a mask and open a window.

I only dust out my X201 (thinkpad, laptop) when it shuts down due to overheating.
