The mtbf is lower and the failrate is like 10-20x higher for traditional drives compared to Intel or Samsung SSDs?
Occassionally windows or smart will give you a heads up right before the drive fails, but with SSD unless its a firmware issue or a shit brand with a shit controller then usually the failure will be slower.
Most of my ssds became obsolete before they came close to failing. Can't even remember how many platter drives have failed. Bittorrent just ate hard drives alive back in the day.
I wouldn't touch budget brands or sandforce controllers though.
You can say that, but in my personal experience I've never had a hard drive fail except for once in an ipod classic which got banged around a bunch.
My Amiga 500 has a SCSI drive from 1991 that still works.
Meanwhile three friends have come to me to try to get me to help them recover data from dead SSD's, only to find that we can't even detect the presence of a SATA device when they are plugged into my desktop.
HDD's also give indications if they're about to die. Noises, SMART warnings/errors, etc.
This is all anecdotal evidence, obviously. But I'm not sold on SSD's.
