VESA made both standards, so why didn't they make the entire standard cross-compatible like the third-party HDMI Forum did with theirs?
Because displayport uses a different electrical signalling format which makes designing longer cables less likely to cause problems at given resolutions?
With displayport, there are only a few allowed transmission rates, so testing a cable up to the maximum allowed transmission rate is easy. With DVI/HDMI, the possibilities are endless, and with longer cables data loss becomes more likely at higher rates.
