I had to cover for someone who was on sick leave to do a slideshow presentation in front a group of govt staff and because my laptop didn't have Powerpoint installed, I resorted to use Portable LibreOffice. Unfortunately, due to compatiblity bugs related to Office OpenXML filter (formatting is all off and inability to edit Excel chart in the .pptx file), I was berated by the govt for using a "substandard" software. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

Maybe if MS software used actually 100% standardized file formats, then "substandard" would be a valid argument.

However, while MS's document format might have been standardized at one point they make no effort to keep the standard up to date, and their implementations don't always comply with the standards as published.

Also try M$'s powerpoint viewer in wine next time.

If it had an actual 35mm slide projector involved, I might be inclined to try just for novelty's sake.
Not PowerPoint, though. Fuck PowerPoint.

I don't think that "Repair" option of my antivirus solved my issue.
But reinstalling the whole thing seems like a pain likely not to work either.
And other antivirus can do worst (it's worst preventing a computer to boot rather than preventing it to shutdown), so I'm not sure what I should do.

This.

M$'s Office 2007 doesn't comply the standard at all. Office 2010 supports only the "transitional" version. And subsequent Office versions finally support the standardized version called "strict" but did NOT make it as the default. Thus the OOXML is a mess of a format.

hugan86: your signature forgets that Seamonkey is also customizable (for now) to the same extent as pale moon.

And you're 100% correct about OOXML. I was misremembering.

Somebody got naughty (spam) with the mail service of my ISP, and now Microsoft is blocking their entire server for spam on address they are in charge of, and all users of the ISP are victims.
It's crazy to see that Internet has existed for so long, yet something so ridiculous can happen.
Well I guess the one to blame here is Microsoft.

The dreaded Windows 10 April Update is finally coming to my laptop (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif)

edit: as expected, while the surface pro didn't show much bad effects (since it's a Microsoft product in the first place, so it would have better support), my laptop is getting a bad side effect from the update.

It seems some parts of the screen don't refresh as they should (the application or component don't redraw itself properly or draw stuff that should not be there (like the bottom left of the screen having icons from the bottom right appearing over the stuff normally appearing there, though I can fix it by moving the mouse over).

And the very bad thing is that I can't find anybody having the same symptoms on Internet (I don't know if I'm a rare case or I'm choosing the wrong keywords (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) ), so I don't know how serious it is.

edit2: good news, that was just an effect happening on the first session under the new update.
I continued using my laptop despite the bugs until I shutdown it at night, and now since I started it this morning, there doesn't seem to be any more trouble. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

edit3: bad news, it came back.So for now, I tried to uninstall my video card drivers and stuff (allowed me to kill some old temp stuff on the way) and reinstall it, but since it took some time after the startup (almost the whole day) for the bad effects to show again, I don't know if it's currently fixed or going to come back (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

Don't bother. Django's dying a Zope death, get a handful of the Flask ecosystem and get some experience with Tornado.

Sounds like some kind of flushing issue, but IDK how that would be solved in windows-land.

Pretty funny how MS can't even make their software work on new machines, while Linux has a similar 'rapid-release' thing going on but still manages to work on my PowerBook from 2004 with a Radeon GPU.

Somewhat similar story with the BSD's, but they generally are a little slower-paced than Linux kernel releases if memory serves.

Today was big maintenance day:

-Reinstalled my antivirus on my main Win XP computer (but really what's the point of making an offline installer that fail to install anything if it's not connected to Internet, make things harder (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) )
-Downgraded the Windows 10 of my laptop from 1803 to 1709.

The troubles I was having seem to be gone for now, though I should wait a few days to be certain.

So Softmaker has decided to get on the bandwagon, as well, of zipped, XML-based document format. Too bad it's proprietary. In other words, useless.

Pretty remarkable that even after instigating it's 'walled garden' which prevents addon writers from installing extensions in release builds of firefox that Mozilla still won't do what it said it would while justifying its requiring code signing, and refuse to sign spyware on AMO.

Oh well. I use seamonkey (which does not stop me from installing my own extensions) and userContent.css for styles anyway.

(yeah mozilla did remove it NOW, but they left it there for about a year it looks like after it started tracking users. How's that for quality assurance?)

If you didn't notice, I'm not a big fan of mozilla policies as of late. Seamonkey's what firefox should have stayed like (netscape communicator).
