I'm not really a fan of Google, but damn, this feels so good.
Apparently there's a publishing lobby called AEDE in Spain that managed to get a law to pass that would require every news aggregator to pay a fee to the publishers they link to. This was obviously meant for Google News as an easy money scheme.
Google decided to have precisely none of this shit, shut down Google News in Spain and effectively removed every Google News link to Spanish publishers worldwide.
This basically fucks Spanish publishers and the AEDE right in the ass, since Google News generates a humongous amount of traffic that they now can't monetize. The biggest German publisher tried the same thing back in June and lasted barely five months before they had to cave in due to the lack of revenue.
Now the AEDE is complaining that closing down Google News will have a "negative impact" and asking for an intervention by the Spanish government and the EU to stop Google.
