The engine had not been known to have ever been used previously and Microsoft received scathing criticism for leaving such a powerful (and dangerous) tool enabled by default with no one aware of its existence.

Fun fact : Windows still masks extensions of known type by default, making it possible for the average computer user to get infected and wonder how it happened while opening a "picture".
Another Fact: Some PC users don't even know what is a file extension. They were puzzled as if they were presented with a hard-to-solve secret of the universe riddle when they saw ".exe", ".doc", ".jpeg" etc. in the file names.
