QUOTE(Spectre @ Jul 20 2012, 19:40) Nice try. GTX 570 maximum operating temperature is listed as upper 90s, I think 97-98c. Even then the solder (let alone the PCB) have a considerably higher melting point than that, like say... double that for the solder. I'd take an educated guess that the PCB resin is at least just as high.
I remembered reading a reviewer's comment on "how a good cooler could prevent the processor from being fried and the PCB from turning into a thick puddle of plastic" in one of my PC magazines some time ago. QUOTE(Spectre @ Jul 20 2012, 19:40) edit: now, my card hasn't gotten that high; mine gets to around 86c under the load I put it on.
That's still pretty HOT. (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) They should've put a better cooler for overclocked versions. This post has been edited by hujan86: Jul 20 2012, 14:14

My fan speed is on full load while running ZDoom. True story. I need to get a better rig when the gaming urges come back at me. :C
Also, if your system allows your GPU temperature to go over 90°C without a BSOD or surprise shutdown, you should do some tinkering before a nuclear meltdown happens.

Just updated the drivers for my graphics card (which didn't solve my original problem) and now I can't play Psychonauts. I've no idea of the extent of the problem either.

Solder usually used for electronics has a melting point of about 180C and PCBs significantly higher than that (since a lot of PCBs are populated via reflow in an oven for the less heat-sensitive components).
But seriously, 86 is still way too hot. You need to crank that fan up.

It doesn't make a bit of difference guys, the balls are inert That's more or less how the card is apparently, based on the three/four dozen testimonials I've read online. However, underclocking just a little bit dropped me down to 75-80c under load.
Also, I had a laptop that hit and sustained 102c. That was fun!

A testament to the idiots who designed the thing. QUOTE(Spectre @ Jul 21 2012, 21:01) Also, I had a laptop that hit and sustained 102c. That was fun!
Dude, my first laptop was a freaking space heater when idle.

I used to have one of those old gaming laptops with a pentium 4 inside(not mobile, an actual desktop pentium 4), it used to get past 100c while playing Bioshock (it somehow ran Bioshock)

Keeping tabs on AMD's 2nd gen APU may prove fruitful.

Apparently Num Lock and RegisterHotKey() don't get along too well Would have been nice to know before I spent half an hour trying to figure out what was wrong with a hotkey module

Geezers might get into computers if you could somehow prove them they can save on heating bills by merely using them in a small room. And that they can also do cool stuff at the same time with them. Like playing crosswords and mahjong, ordering food online and Googling for shit instead of watching TV.
Turning old people into hikikomori might cause unexpected issues, though.

Changed my FB privacy settings because my "wall" was being spammed with religious-related posts with "Like" requests.

AS long as they're not driving. Hmm, I think I lost an o ring for one of he injectors. Guess I'll find it when I'm tearing the engine down to see what killed it.

Everyday we exchange documents with over 20MB file size through email. Because none of the company's staff has enough brain capacity to figure out how to resize or compress pictures in their Word, Excel and Powerpoint files.

Maybe you can share a folder on the network or something like that, that should be easier to do.

During my stint as an admin assistant for the Feds, I improved the efficiency of our office's administrative division by 30% simply by applying the use of software automation protocols. True story.
