Seriously. I've tried using a staff and it's poop so I guess I have no idea of how to become a mage. Since it's all the rage these days, how do you do it and be successful at it?

Hum, ok I'll try to fully explain. That can take a while until you can be a "good" mage since you staff/cloth, elemental/forbidden proficiencies are probably very low, and you need to raise them first. -To raise staff proficiency, get a crude item, battletoad it, using magic missile, cost 0 MP or use a staff like you're melee, hit to death many monsters lol. You don't need to cap it, but try to get 70% of your level. -To raise cloth prof, just melee a while with 5 pieces of evade silk, and go go go. -The other 3 don't worry they'll cap very fast. For general proposes like GrindFest/IW: First you need: -All elec tiers, including ratings for max power (elec is the elemental which less monsters are resistant) -Arcane Focus/Arcane Mediation -Ebony staff of destruction like this one. MDM, elec EDB, elemental proficiency, are the priorities, and then INT/WIS. Ignore ET stats, you don't need it. -Elemental proficiency gear like this or mjolnir gear like this (although I could get 18% for my level) Now equip godlies, and start maging IW items. Fist cast AF, them cast T-storm on blue slime/mind reapers/mantras every rounds, and if you can't one-shot the entire round frequently yet, cast it again. Later when you capped the proficiencies, harder difficulties, and even using WoT on battletoads. Dealing with Bosses and for End of Days+ arenasSince you have the 250 tier, get the soul spells, and max the soul rating. Gear: A staff like this, and the gear is the same like the elementalist, but now it's demon.fiend instead like this-Advice you to raise forbidden prof in item words first until a very decent level like 70% of your current level or so. For bosses just cast nerf+blind+weaken, then soul burst to kill them, and well of the EoD+ arenas, when the time arrives (Forbidden proficiency almost capped) ask again how to do it, since you'll need ET to recover MP this time, ok (IMG:[ invalid] style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) Edit: Almost forgot, for the random bosses you encounter in IW/Fest/Hourly challenges, you have the "elementalist" gear but don't worry you kill them the same way, you're just a little weaker nothing more. tl;dr: Equip an Ebony Staff of Destruction with high damage and Elementalist armor with high proficiency bonuses and max out Elec and Soul. Thunderstorm shit mobs to death, Soul Fire+Soul Burst the big bads.

I noticed Staffs do crushing damage. I'm so used to DW with bleed and PA. But it seems mages can beat the higher arenas much easier so that's why I wanted to see how you do it.
Am I going to see a huge difference using this fighting style? And when we get to the higher arena challenges, are we expected to play as mages?

Silly, you don't hit things as a mage. You melt their faces off with witchcraft.
You can clear a round in one attack, if that's what you mean by difference. The Legendary Slogs can be done as melee, it just takes so long and is so boring. AoEs make everything quicker and easier. Maybe when we finally get Skills, it'll be a little faster.

once you can untargeted clear rounds, the difference between mage and melee is mage is
(you can hotkey your spells but i just hover click)
hover mouse over AOE spell of choice
click, 1, spacebar, click, 1, spacebar, click, 1, spacebar
you just cleared 3 rounds. ~1-2s per round
for melee you have to
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,spacebar,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,spacebar... much longer, and things hit back.

You got to 274 without maging even once? I have to commend you on that, should be an accomplishment in itself.

most interesting topic ever.. i was wondering about the same question
stick please
meh i hope that next patch will fix this thing, it's not right that only mages can clear rounds so fast the most beautiful game is the one that gives choices in gameplay without too much drawbacks

while mages are able to use aoe to clear rounds fast, they are too heavily dependant on mana. they are practically dead meat once their mana gets too low.
and this is where melee shines...

Okay, okay. Let's stop the bullshit already. As soon as anyone starts talking about how mages are overpowered, a bunch of people jump up to explain reasons why mages aren't.
Well, it's bullshit. Mages ARE overpowered. Ridiculously overpowered. Like, the balance isn't even remotely close.
Dependent on mana? Guess what, melee is dependent on mana too.
Melee can clear the same arenas mages can? Yeah, at half the difficulty, with twice the item usage, and 4 times the time. Sure.
Maging requires more attention? Yes, if hitting 2 keys on your keyboard at the same time instead of 1 somehow totally shuts down your brain, then I guess so.
The fact is that mages can do anything a melee can do. Cheaper. Faster. And at 4+ times the difficulty.
It's not like it's some great secret that needs to be kept. Tenboro knows. He's not brain-dead. If he's going to nerf maging, he's going to nerf it. No matter how many people try to say that it's balanced. It's not. Get over it.

Mage >>>>>>>>melee At the very least melee needs AOE skills to be time efficient viable again.
Then again, melee used to be >>>>>>>>>> mage.

Even at my level lightning storm only costs 9 mp, with my 750 mp i can use it 83 times (probably more, but let's ignore my low magic regain of 12.54 and my aura which speeds up mp regain).
1 TS can pretty much kill almost every mob in 1 hit (minus mind raper and mantra and some occasional bosses that show up), if i can get a second wind (which recovers 86 mp for me) every 9 or 10 rounds i will never run out of mp. I don't even need to cast any buffing spells or regain if i kill them instantly so that saves me mp as well.
Even if i do run out (after encountering bosses and not getting secod winds or mana gems) i still have 10 mana potions in my inventory.
In short, even i (not that high level) don't have to worry much about mana.
Magic is ridiculously overpowered compared to melee X_X the only thing that i can't handle with magic yet are FSM and FPU due to my low profiencies

Ok, since I'm going to get the third tier of fire spells at Level 110, I've been wondering, should I switch over from my current Electric spell setup to Fire spells until I reach Level 170 (when I get the third tier of Electric spells) and then switch back to Electric spells at Level 170, or....?

i am stil using tier 2 spells and i can pretty much one hit kill almost anything with 1 chain lighting in an exquisite item on hard. But i have some mjolnir gear though.
So it depends on what you have, if you have a very good surtr gear or no decent mjolnir stuff, then you could go for tier 3 fire or ice spells. Ice is the 2nd least, after elec, elemental spell that gets resisted by normal monsters

Yeah, I have no good Mjolnir or Surtr gear, so I might as well just try out the Tier 3 Fire spells to see how much damage it does overall.

Yeah, I've always been DW after equipment became available and I got around to doing the arena battles. I remember using Ball Lightning a lot before that but I've never used a staff except to experiment. When HV came out, I didn't know how to play it and I was left behind everybody else. I couldn't even beat a Legendary and that's why I made that thread in the other section asking how to do it. After I understood it, I caught up and passed everyone. I have a lot of EXP bonuses so what I can't do skill-wise, I make up for in amount. I've never hidden the fact that I don't know how to play HentaiVerse. I just play it while I'm watching TV and lately it's been boring me. And I don't do Grindfest or IW, either.

I can almost one-shot mobs with Chain Lightning. I'm about 200 damage off from being able to one-shot mobs with Chain Lightning.
I've one-shot two mobs successfully, including a 9 monster mob with both a Scary Ghost and Blue Slime. I targeted the Blue Slime with Chain lightning, it crit for 1,986 damage, Scary Ghost was crit for 1,271 damage, everyone else hit for around 700-900 damage. I always seem to leave a little HP left on them, so I figure that once I hit 100 and get the second focused aura, I'll upgrade my Yellow aura to Rank three to get the 2% Elec rating....I also need to get my Elemental rating up...right now, I think it is around 30 or so. I'm working on it, though.
