I wouldn't do it, unless you have gotten a much better rapier. How do you know the game version won't change one day and mage becomes weaker? Or maybe a higher difficulty is introduced that is too tough for mages. It's good to keep around the possibility of going back to melee one day.

Your rapier is endgame quality and better than mine as it currently is, but it won't be notable without that IW.

I might face a similar decision to you someday, even more so because my rapier is max forged and has a less perfect IW. But I think mine can only be replaced with a Peerless Ethereal (I've seen a couple better and near perfect Legendary Ethereal rapiers, but any improvement wouldn't be worth the trouble). If I got a Peerless Demonic or Hallowed, I'd probably max upgrade it without salvaging my current one.

Charged cotton shoes of elementalist are another seriously overrated shit, after the presence of ethereal rapiers. The market and this established notion are fucking cursed. Shoes are like 3~5 times expensive than gloves.

Replacing gloves with shoes only increases 2.43% of total EDB from phases(counting EDB from staff, that's ppl +2%damage), but lose a bit mitigation reduction(unless they already hit 0.78 with shoes) and counter-resist, which might be even more beneficial than those EDB.
+2% damage trading for less mitigation reduction and counter-resist is almost negligible for imp styles.

It give you a bit more evade and PABs also, but I agree it is overrated.
I would rather buy DD perks or even building a non-imp holy set, instead of buying shoes.
Maybe those riches all have DDV already.

AFAIK caps and shoes are preferred over gloves because it's still possible to reach 0.68 prof factor with shoes alone.
But IMHO, one should aim for 1.0 prof factor. By doing so, one may lose a small bit of EDB, but will deal damage way more consistently, which makes a difference between killing 6-7 monsters with a single blast, and killing only 3-4.

In all cases, if gloves are so cheap, then one should seriously think about going that way if one wants to build a cheap elemental build.
