Yeah I've seen Fluttershy many times before and identified her. It wasn't until THIS new puzzle scheme that I ever had persistent problems.

If you ask me how certain pony look then i probably wont give even some vague answer. But when i see pic then its like insta easy correct answer. I had no doubts thats fluttershy.

Thats probably some hv magic. That puzzles trained me like electroshock.

The problem is that if picture would have color-scheme, then by using pretty easy code one can find percentage of every color in this image and then this information might be used by bot to solve the captcha quickly.

In short, picture with Pinkie Pie has lots of pink and red colors - more than any other picture with any other pony. If script, after parsing the picture, will see that picture has lots of red & pink - it might click "Pinkie Pie" button with no doubts.

So, having greyscaled images is like one more barrier for easy, bot-based, captcha solving.
