so basically illegal streaming/downloads are more and more present, but it's still not proven piracy actually does affect the market in a sensible way.

meanwhile, in italy seems that SIAE (the italian equivalent of RIAA or MPAA, just a tad bit less powerful) will be stripped of its monopoly. and quite recently, its president (a famous italian singer) has been investigated for tax evasion, but absolved because of tiime terms.

Except for recent top films yes. Well, actually they see even some positiv effects. But i am now to lazy to go search and quote them.

back then, they said downloading said materials could've been useful for users to evaluate the product before actually purchasing it. sort of a demo. it has even been proven (don't ask me why, nor how many people were interviewed) that a fair amount of those same users actually purchased them after having tried them this way.

Also this.
Most stuff is quite expensive, especially for 1 hour or so of content.

I happily buy dvds of stuff I like, but to know if I like it or not, I have to see it beforehand, and no way I'm paying before that (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/duck.gif)

(cinema is an exception since I don't have a giant room with a huge white screen, an ultra-mega-hd version of a movie and a poweful projector to recreate the experience, so few € once in a while are okay (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) )

But mostly: a whole bunch of people that uses illegal streaming/download is that part of population that would've never been a purchaser in the first place.

So piracy or not, the sales don't change because of those people (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/duck.gif)

cinemas are giving a service, so i may still understand that. popcorn/coke's costs are, well... mere speculation. but whatever.

fair enough.

also, while we're at it: we italians are a peculiar case. i don't know how exactly it works in other countries, but as far as i know here SIAE is eating a percentage of the price blank CD/DVD supports (and possibly even USB storage and recorders, iirc. don't know how this goes with CD/DVD with actual contents) because of "equo compenso" ("may be translated as a cocky "fair reward", but the real concept is way more perverse).

basically, SIAE assumes you'll use those supports to burn pirated content, and is artificially raising the price of those supports to earn back (in advance) those missing incomings. the amount of the raise can be up to 50% of final price.
also, legally it's (roughly) defined as "the tribute to pay to be able to buld a backup copy of digitally protected supports", while you should be awarded by the publisher itself a second copy in case the first one has DRM technologies.

thrilling, isn't it? (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

This is actually very much the situation in my country as well. With the way our copyright laws work, the expected "lost" income is assumed to be made back from blank CD/DVDs (despite the fact that no one really uses them nowadays). And it's in fact legal to download and own any amount of pirated content (movies, TV shows, music, etc), as long as it's for personal use, so you could have a hard drive full of pirated movies and no one would lift a finger as long as you're not distributing or uploading them yourself. Computer games and other programs are an exception, though. It's illegal to pirate those. Go figure (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

Well, we in germany have the Pauschalabgabe or Urheberrechtsabgabe. It is a part of the price we pay for every scanner, printer, fax, copier, computer with and without CD/DVD burner, smartphone, tablet computer, MP3 player, USB storage, hard-drives, video recorder, DVD Player, tape player and anythingselse, that just even has some similiar abilities. Isnt that nice? (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/happy.gif) I guess that gives the term Tätervolk a whole new meaning. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

And i am sure this isnt even the full list. Now that i thought about it, cameras are also included so are tapes in every form, just like blank CD/DVD and i would bet and win, that i still did miss something. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

yes, yes. i know how it goes. if we go by whatever can play DRM content, then even FM radios and TV should apply.

Only if they are able to record or use something you could record with. So a FM radio that would be able to play cassettes would qualify and so would a TV with HDD. Just a normal TV wouldnt afaik. But i could be wrong.

You mean absurd like a television and radio licence fee every single household had to pay and it doesnt matter if you even own anything that could received any broadcasting and could you even bring into jail if you refuse to pay it? Or still pay a tax on sparkling wine that was introduced by a monarchy that doesnt exists since nearly a century ago, to finance a navy that doesnt exsists also since a century? Yo. We got complete bullshit politics regarding piracy here too. And the laughstock of agencies that is supposed to fine those who do download stuff, without any regard if you actually already own the thing you've downloaded or not. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif)

Anyone watching that [hea01] in Superlat's auction? LOL it's over 100M now. I wonder how many PF DWDs tsukikoazusa had to do to win that piece of hardware.

This, folks, is why lower, less well heeled players cannot keep up with 0.86 - the gear they need is routinely subjected to a Lensman-style bidwar arms race.

I'm wondering when a Spiral Nemesis will happen in the auction-verse (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Well, in Russia, we have dual-like copyright system.
On one hand - we have pretty strict laws about copyrighted content (mostly music and cinema) and these laws were established one-two years ago. Access to thw site with pirated contented may be blocked on ISP-side and owners should pay a fair.
...but on other hand - nobody give a damn. ISP do not block my torrents - I can download anything with no fear. Yes, lots of sites were blocked (like rutracker.org and rutor.org) - but any proxy or VPN may bypass that restriction. I have 3 HDD full of cinemas, TV series, music and so on.
What the heck, in our Russian social-web - vk.com - anyone can listen ANY music of any singer or band for free, add them in collection, upload and give a link - and that site is not blocked. I know some people who never used vk.com for communication, but used it for finding a music or listen it online (more like a radio station with no ads and favorite songs only).
Our country works at the principal "we don't care about laws, to hell with them" - totally different law culture than in Europe or USA. =)

hmmm... not worth it, trust me. either you have a big backup of things already, or it'll be hard at this point to try and earn a 3rd spot.

Ahah. Of cource, just joking =)
No way I can fit with my hypothetical third auction and outbid such established auctions (especially Super's server-side system). Well, and I think, with automated system or not - managing an action is a headache and a real pain in buttock.
