I am trying to gain some dark proficiency, so I did some experimenting:

I noticed that this was only a slight reduction of speed against schoolgirls. Almost the same time to finish the SG arena's. Then I noticed that Konata was killed 2 times faster than before.

So I did another experiment, now for speed:

This gave me a slight improvement of clear speed on SG arena! Even with crappy low holy proficiency and no holy-imperil abilities equipped.

Hypothesis: Imperil Elemental Mage (maybe Dark too?) can finish SG arena's faster when T3 holy spell is included in spell rotation, especially with some holy abilities added.

Well, you can tweak that to perfection by not maxing the ability of Paradise Lost. Maybe at 4 turn cooldown the mana is through the roof, but at 8 turns - what I used - it's hardly noticable. Maybe the sweet spot is at 5 or 6 turns cooldown?

I guess holy imperil isn't much use against SG, because they don't have any holy resistance? So that means only invest in Soul Fire for this experiment?

soul fire and decaying soul (or however it's called) are basically free, so why not? however, did you try the effect of T2 vs T3?
