It would be completely optional, of course, only on items you'd specifically request monitoring on. I remember seeing a number of people complain about how it's not that fun to have to hover around auctions as they're ending to read each post and make sure they see new bids, and so they know when they have to rebid on items they really want - or how if they make a bid on Wednesday and someone outbids them Friday and they'll have to reread everything carefully later to remember what they were bidding on and see whether they still have the highest bid.
(Well, some people are happy to do that for the sake of tactical advantage over those that don't, which is fun for them, but not everyone is like that)
If the auction post gets updated immediately every time there's a new bid, that partially solves the issue, but changes still probably aren't quite as obvious as some people would prefer.

Plainly, yes.
Would that only count for being outbid or would it be possible to track bids in general this way?
Well, theoretically it would be "possible", but that's way too many server pings due to the fact that a very interested bidder only really cares about
that one bid on the item after theirs, and whether it exists or not. It's not something I would ever inflict on E-H servers or myself. The interested bidder will have to actually read the updated auction post in the thread to see the current highest bid, or check the [

auction log and search for the item code if they're really that curious about the full bid chain.
PMs: I don't think they're a limiting factor because
(*) Someone would specifically request notification probably only for one or three items they're
really interested in. Multiply by the average number of bids
the user makes on an item before winning or giving up and it's still quite low. (I would have to make sure my own "Save a sent copy" and "Track" is disabled, though (IMG:[

(*) Worst case: maybe someone participates in 10 of my auctions and ends up with a few pages of mails over a few months. So at that point, they would have to take a minute or two to select all in each folder and delete all of them.
