Well that is wrong, eth weapon + shade and you can still do it. I've gone over 300 rounds on BT before using a potion. I sure as hell can't do that as a mage.

I think the problem with maging is the fact that you use too much mana. And there's really no reliable way for a mage to stop incoming damage, unlike a 2h melee (shatter strike is a 5 turn minimum no damage state for *all* monsters).

In addition to that, melee of both the light/heavy kind can easily get ~30 evade / block / okay evade + high block (feathered) + no burden + no interference. So if you compare survivability between mages and melees, there's a big gap. Mages do not have the mitigation that melees have, just the evade.

Another thing that is against mages is mana usage. Melees do not use mana at all when dealing damage. A simple comparison here: At BT, a mage will need to cast about 2-3 t3/t4 spells to clear a single round. Assuming both have IA4 (not uncommon), a melee would, tops, use 20 mana per round (12-15 turns of damaging), or in some cases, gain 20 mana (auras and such). So a mage would be using upwards of 80-100 mana per round, while the melee would be using 1/5th.

So mages right now have the disadvantage of both mana usage and survivability. This is probably why they can't get far.
