The data is still in disk unless you write (namely erase) them again.

using which software? ccleaner? i think ccleaner does the best job at erasing files.

[en.wikipedia.org] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_remanence

Essentially, unless you take steps to prevent it via repeatedly overwriting a disk, you should assume that data can be recovered via specialized software. That said, unless you're doing illegal shit, working with really sensitive data or have someone with a grudge, technical skills and a lot of time on their hands, it's really not going to be an issue.

well i'm certain the data was securely erased because it is not possible to recover data on encrypted hard drives that have been reformatted. If it was an unencrypted hard drive, then yeah the data can be recovered. But data on encrypted hard drives (that get reformatted) cannot be recovered. So yeah, I reformatted an encrypted hard drive. It is all gone. For good.

Did you just format it or did you cycle the "keys"
If you just formatted it the data still exists
If you completely zeroed then wrote a new encryption partition to the drive then you cycled the keys, any data that was on the drive is now completely lost. Still there but without the old key you can never get it back.

Yeah, if it's encrypted just erasing the key (usb?) took less than 1 minutes and nobody can ever read your data re-formatted or not.

as a side note, possession of adult pornography and hentai is illegal in many places. I obviously don't own any cp. But I own several hundred gigabytes of adult porn and hentai, and I realized that isn't legal here in Ontario. So just to be safe, I'm getting rid of it from my computer. Of course, adult porn and hentai is relatively safe, but it still isn't legal to have saved on your computer.

Let's say you cross an international border (from Canada to the USA). Or book a flight at an airport from Canada to Japan. The border inspectors might inspect what kind of files you have saved on your computer/devices. And if they discover porn saved on your devices, you might get into serious legal trouble.

Of course, if it is just bookmarks/browsing history to porn sites they discover, nothing might happen to you. But if they discover actual porn files saved on your hard drive, you might get into serious legal trouble. Even if it is adult porn and hentai (and not actual cp).

What

I don't have any porn on my hard drives either, but it's more of a personal choice. If I started "collecting" stuff I know it'd just lead to hoarding sooner or later.
