I have some comics and want to convert the halftone patterns back to grayscale images. Is there a way to do this? By the way, Photoshop's Gaussian blur effect doesn't work very well. (IMG:[invalid] style_emoticons/default/cry.gif)

Do you have the physical comics or just image files?

What you are looking to do is to "descreen" which is a feature on scanners that cancels out the halftone pattern from that style of printing. If you have the comics themselves, you'll probably get the best results using such a scanner, but otherwise you should search for a 'descreen plugin' for photoshop or whatever software you have. There might be some free or opensource options out there.

Okay, here is the plugin you need

[github.com] Github Fourier Transform Plugin for GIMP

GIMP is an opensource editor, like a freeware Photoshop. If you don't have it, you can get it at [www.gimp.org] https://www.gimp.org/

After installing GIMP and then installing the plugin, you should be able to use it on the image files. I haven't used the Plugin, but it seems pretty simple, it'll apply a filter that will convert the halftone patterns to gradient greyscale. There may be settings which you can adjust until you like the result.

I'm sure there is a way to 'batch process' this procedure, but I do not know how to do this with GIMP as I use Photoshop. Basically, once you figure out the settings that work well for filtering one page (pick one that has a lot of detail as your test) you'll just need to go through the 'help' section or maybe ask an AI like Grok how to apply a batch process in GIMP. That way it will take all of your images, apply that filter to each of them, and then save the new copy so you don't have to do it individually.
