Manga:
- Karakuri Odette probably counts as obscure, it's a shojo manga about robots but I liked it a lot when I read it in middle school even if I wasn't the target demographic.
- [en.wikipedia.org] Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou is kind of well known, I guess (certainly better known than Karakuri Odette), but people still don't talk about it much and it's really good. Also about robots… kind of. But really it's not so much that as it's the atmosphere and a sort of sense of sadness and longing as the planet falls apart.
- Sankarea, which is about zombies. Also it's a love story.
- Dragon Half - silly and wacky but was also a really fun read for me. Not sure how well known it is because I'm younger than most people who are likely to know it.
Anime:
- Dragon's Heaven - cool, experimental, very different.
- Patema Inverted - one of the newest things on this list, i think it was from around 2013. Very cool and unique sci-fi setting. Was absolutely fascinating to watch.
- Dragon Half - silly and wacky but was also a really fun read for me. There's an OVA series too.
- Key the Metal Idol - well known in certain groups but I think especially younger people might not have seen it. No one knows what I'm talking about when I mention it anymore. And I don't think it's had a blu-ray or other HD release, just DVD and laserdisc and VHS.
- Not even remotely obscure, but no one talks about it anymore, anyway: bubblegum crisis.
I'll also recommend reading tetsuwan atom (astro boy) which is not at all fucking obscure, but no one actually seems to read it anyway despite its significance.
