on steam i'm seeing way too many negative reviews, on youtube i'm seeing "players are deleting borderlands" but then reddit is all like "its just what ever other game does" and "auck hellfire"(the one uploading the videos criticizing the EULA)

also if the game i have is spying on me whats my best bet to start playing it without worry.

You're gonna have to be a bit more specific. I haven't heard of any NEW controversies regarding BL4, but there's some baggage with the company and it's president and CEO, Randy Pitchford. It's been a few years, so i don't remember everything that's happened since BL3 released. Pitchford supposedly assulted Claptrap's VA, and them intimidated the guy out of the company. I remember a lot of Gearbox employees coming out and saying Pitchford was up there with bobby Cotick as Game Execs who were just terrible to the staff. Not only in regards to crunch, but just being terrible people.

One of the Randy stories I remember quite well was that he retweet hard cat snuff on twitter. He undid the RT, but made a weird move and tried to explain why it wasn't weird for him to do that?

It's possibly the price of BL4 that's got people riled up. $70 USD seems to be the limit people are willing to pay for games, and are understandably voicing frustrations with anything higher than that. Hell, Doom Dark Ages just released for $70 USD and I've not heard much complaints over that. It's nintendo's $80 USD that's started the vocal pushback on pricing.

He also casually carried around a USB stick that contained porn of "barely legal teen" actresses and left it at a public location. Also saved on it was a bunch of sensitive company information.

The kicker is that he said that he didn't save it because of it being porn but because the actions the actresses were doing reminded him of a "magic trick" and, being something of a magician himself, he couldn't help but want to hold onto it for """research""" purposes.

He made controversial comments about the pricing of BL4 and games in general that were out of touch with the cost of living crisis and 'boomerish'.

They have had a ton of other controversies like getting busted for inappropriate behaviors then responding by doubling down on performative wokeness as a smoke screen. This ruined the movie, and some borderland fans are still raging about character changes in DLCs or Borderland 4.

Then they doubled down on intrusive anti-piracy measures which people might tolerate if they trust your company / brand.

Basically they are doing all they can to tarnish the IP, which culturally was like bottled lightening and cool/zany at the time but now seems to be turning into corpo slop.

you know what? I'm gonna play ones i already own at my own risk and if my friends vouch for 4(i don't think they play much borderlands) then i will get it to add to my collection.

every $10 USD a game is priced at should equal quality, re-playablity and freedom to play however i want. tf2 is free and the platinum standard for FPS shooters with server plugins, custom class load-outs and taunts, i own more cosmetics than i can equip across my 36 cosmetic load-outs for my classes.

"Take Two doesn't install Spyware"

"We just want to have a looksee at your data and machine regardless of your consent so we can se...uh...improve player experience going forward and make sure everything is running as it should! Yeah, that's it, completely different"

"And we of course reserve the right to ban and disrupt your access to the game/service you paid for. Does using mods for Borderlands count as disrupting multiplayer play or going against the intended experience that the developers envisioned? Who knows! We'll just say that we don't care what you do in singleplayer games and leave it at that"

I don't give a shit about all the culture war drama, but the new update made even the old Borderlands games total spyware. No way am I ever installing those again on any machine I own, so I was effectively scammed of my money. Plebbitors saying shit like "every game does this" are just part of the problem. No, not every game does this. None of the games I play do this. If you're a braindead NPC consoomer who can't resist the temptation of installing every Sony movie game regardless of their EULAs and attached spyware then yeah, you're already being spied upon. But retroactively adding this spyware bullshit to old games that didn't have it at the time of purchase is still not acceptable.

On top of that Borderlands 2 is so buggy you NEED to mod it to play at a framerate higher than 60fps without getting stuck on random bits of the environment, so enjoy getting banned for "exploits" like FIXING THE FUCKING GAME.

As for "how to play the games safely?": Just pirate an older version. Or play something else. They're not that great anyway.

seems my character zer0 wasn't just stubbing his tow on everything, i really do need mods to make it so i can walk over the terrain.

also in this reply is my review: its fun, its got story, its got both good and bad rng rolls (good like enemies will spawn with higher stats to really challenge me, bad rng rolls where i ended up with too many weird parts to my weapons that make no sense like the iron sight snipers). verdict: I really should have played it earlier in life when I first bought it rather than wait on friends to also want to join a session.

oh and the character i chose happens to speak in haiku, this is something I've only ever seen once before: gruntilda in the japanese release of banjo kazooie
