Maken-ki. I'm not usually a shonen fan, but this one was a pleasant surprise. It's got great art (especially from chapter 40 onwards), well written, has awesome fight scenes that buck the usual trend of simply being about "power levels", and it even concludes with a surprise twist.

Even better, it doesn't overstay its welcome. At only 124 chapters, i was able to binge through it in about 3 or 4 days. It's that good (I was hooked).

Super difficult for me to say personally, but the first serious manga I read as a child had to be Phoenix by Osamu Tezuka. I'm not for sure if it was the Tokyo Pop release or not since it was so long ago, but it definitely stuck with me!
