Yes, but on the flip side, did you get anything remotely usable?

Since I'm stable for now I might as well ask. How was the JLPT level 2? I need to take it soon for some general credits but I haven't done any studying other than reading light novels and shit. Any tips or suggestions on how I should study?
Fuck me, this was intended for vlad

QUOTE(vlad @ Aug 22 2010, 15:56) This.
If we already knew what we wanted we'd rather have said "do this, this and that, and the one with the cleanest lines and the smallest deviation from our ridiculously detailed spec will be the winner." The point wasn't just to draw something nice according to instructions, but to design something and then draw it. We're not designers, so our critique would have had a pretty good chance of turning a good idea into a bad one, just because the artist thought he'd have a better shot at winning if he adopted our ridiculous modifications to his idea.
Imagine the shitstorm if one of us told one of the participants that "make it more like so, and more like this, and then you do that and it'll be great" and we then decided on something else, because the one providing the critique decided that his ideas didn't work out after all or because the rest of us decided that his ideas sucked.
Sounds reasonable to me. So, when will we have the results (the outcome) of this contest? QUOTE(radixius @ Aug 22 2010, 16:06) Yes, but on the flip side, did you get anything remotely usable?
Aren't we forgetting something here? They can use the image in whatever means they want to, including hardcore modification, 10% partial use of the whole picture, graphic effects etc. QUOTE(tehsmratgenuis @ Aug 22 2010, 15:41) Hurf I just want the credits.
I want the hath and the honor of having my shit used as a real mascot. The credits are nice, but I get about 200k every month with my HV sessions... This post has been edited by HybridGuardian: Aug 22 2010, 16:47

Let's look at the people that have three poses up:
BradRepko with a stick figure. HybridGuardian with a whateverthefuckitis. Panuru with his whateverhtefuckitis. XpoisonX's E-BoT. sekirei07's Bun E. Hentai. FourThirteen's whateverthefuckitis. cockrifle's whateverthefuckitis. FourThirteen's Cockscot. Panda's Tofu Block. EvoKing's book thing. John Stossel's coffin-thing. tehsmratgenuis's whateverthefuckitis.
And the only thing I can see as viable as a mascot is Panuru's whateverthefuckitis.
Mascots are overrated, anyway. Logos are where it's at.

You seem to have made up your mind on how a mascot/logo for a hentai site should look like. Care to share an example picture from whatever source? (I am really curious, because of your complaints that almost nothing is worthy to win this contest)

I did put some stuff up and bowed out because all of it looked terrible. I'm not about to put out some low quality bullshit to gain a reward that's ephemeral. Panuru's whateverthefuckitis has got the best chance because it's simple, yet unique, even though I may not like it, personally. It'll be easy to shrink down and remain recognizable. It can be used on other media, maybe even a future subdomain's logo, or what have you, and it's identifiable, rather than some animu person that looks like every other animu person ever used for a hentai translation group's mascot. The effort put into some of the other entries is admirable, this much is apparent, but effort doesn't give ground to quality, and, yes, I may be a little picky in this matter that doesn't require my opinion at all, but I despise graphical things looking stupid, which is something I have to deal with in my job pretty often, unfortunately. I really don't care if someone's proud of what they've done, I really don't care how much effort someone put into something they created and I don't really care how much they want or need something, if it doesn't look good, I'm not going to tell someone it looks good. It's not going to help someone grow if you solely tell someone positive things about their work, especially if it's not up to par. Let's just make a hypothetical situation, say you were the head of creative services for a business that actually makes money, and you were looking for a mascot, and these things came across your desk. Would you honestly consider some of these entries as viable? This may not seem like a big deal to anyone entering, because most of the contenders are proud of their own work, but think about the EHT, they'll have to put their names to this image for a long, long time coming. Do you really want to stick them with something that looks as if a juvenile with underdeveloped art skills gave them a picture to hang on the fridge? But as mentioned previously, the whole idea was flawed in the first place. Instead of looking for a mascot, the EHT should have organized under a logo, developed a name for themselves outside this little ramshackle operation, get an easy release schedule (i.e. a translation every 2-3 months), and work as a team to meet these schedules, and not this vague idea that some "mascot" is going to instill solidarity in their numbers, and then trying to pass it off on us as believable, because it isn't.

@radi. Your point is valid. But to admit that, means the whole contest was meant to fail from the beginning.
Only a highly professional artist could have met with the standards needed to win it. Yet we can't expect anyone but a fanartist to give out his work for a mere "virtual" credits.
However the EHT will have to decide themselves what kind of logo/mascot they want... maybe they don't care for a highly professional work, afterall it is a "fanworks" community... if they did, I doubt they would have made this contest.
And I share the opinion of tehsmratgenuis, none of the submissions made here should be used as a mascot, rather an artist should be chosen to work together with the EHT to create a good/worthy mascot.

Well, that would only be logical, but who wants to deal with that burden?

Offer the artist(s) a "virtual" payment and I think almost every serious contestant here would be willing to invest more time. Afterall it is the only option to get a decent/usable mascot, that I could think off.

QUOTE Since I'm stable for now I might as well ask. How was the JLPT level 2? I need to take it soon for some general credits but I haven't done any studying other than reading light novels and shit. Any tips or suggestions on how I should study? The hearing part is stupidly easy, which is probably to lull you into a false sense of security for the vocabulary and reading comprehension parts. You're extremely short on time for those two parts, so you'd better be good at skimming a text to get the general gist out of it, because there's simply no time for meticulous parsing and analysis. (Most likely by design, as nobody cares how well you can grasp the meaning of a text if it takes you the rest of the week.) I didn't really study at all except for refreshing my kanji memory, which was probably retarded. If you read light novels at a decent pace you'll do far better than I did. QUOTE But as mentioned previously, the whole idea was flawed in the first place. No, we don't think a mascot will magically make everyone productive as fuck. What we're doing is putting together quality standards and a bunch of criteria that every release has to fulfill, and some sort of identifying aspect is part of that. A release schedule would also make a pretty good addition, though obviously any sort of hard deadline is going to be impossible for a volunteer-driven operation. QUOTE Well, that would only be logical, but who wants to deal with that burden? Either we virtually bribe someone who has produced good results here (not necessarily the winner - best idea and best execution are seldom the same,) or I booze bribe an acquaintance of mine.

The latter is the best idea, I think. Reward the best idea here, though, just for the effort involved (unless you plan on using something, which would be dumb), and because someone will probably flip out over it for no reason. But I think going with a simple, nice looking logo would be better than a mascot, mostly due to mascots looking tacky as fuck if not executed correctly.

Second. edit: however, if you can live with a "fan-ish" mascot, it might still be a good idea to continue the mascot project... we seriously miss a pro in this community... This post has been edited by HybridGuardian: Aug 23 2010, 00:24

that sounded 'un' artistic. as long someone comeout with some mascot and get the job done is all that is matter. end of story. is that only you or others too? someone put all their hardwork and had to endure critique, stamina to draw, and time wasted and all those work put in gone wasted? if they were able to put their art to business, then go for it. but if art = money, probably art = nothing but just a tool of trade? then might as well post it in somewhere where there is more visitor and watchers rather then this small community. Last chance I'll have to check this thread until September. Old request but I feel that it accurately depicts the feelings of pretty much everyone in this thread in some way.
