I guess it's mostly for bandwidth and storage space, assuming they're paying for their own image server. Exporting those RGB images as 8-bit PNGs can save them anywhere from half to two-thirds of the file size. You'd think they'd do better, though, given how aggressively they monetize their content.
Well, there's so much you can do when you're compressing 16.7 million possible colors down to 256 indexed colors, and frankly I don't think the ugly downside of banding & dithering everywhere is worth sticking with the lossless format at this point. JPEG might just be more efficient. Even Fakku or Irodori never export their color pages to PNG, iirc. Though I guess it also helps to trick people into thinking it's PNG, therefore lossless and high quality? Or maybe it's just pure incompetence? Not like Doujins.com has ever been applauded for their editing prowess.
