I figured this is the best place to ask so I'll just get into it: Is there an actual reason for doujins.com to dither all of the colored images they upload? Sure, sometimes it's not noticeable, especially on large images that get downscaled, but sometimes it just looks so awful that I cant believe they did it.

I have basically 0 experience with editing, but to me it looks like they're just griefing their own galleries. Maybe you have to go on their website and pay money for the undithered version?

I guess it's mostly for bandwidth and storage space, assuming they're paying for their own image server.
Exporting those RGB images as 8-bit PNGs can save them anywhere from half to two-thirds of the file size.
You'd think they'd do better, though, given how aggressively they monetize their content.

Well, there's so much you can do when you're compressing 16.7 million possible colors down to 256 indexed colors, and frankly I don't think the ugly downside of banding & dithering everywhere is worth sticking with the lossless format at this point. JPEG might just be more efficient.
Even Fakku or Irodori never export their color pages to PNG, iirc.
Though I guess it also helps to trick people into thinking it's PNG, therefore lossless and high quality?
Or maybe it's just pure incompetence? Not like Doujins.com has ever been applauded for their editing prowess.
