I have been warned by old coworkers never to take a salary for that reason, and it's advice i might take.
Depends on the org and industry. Salaries can mean infinite work, but it can come with job security and career progression. The majority of higher paid roles above 100k are salaried I think.
There were times when I made a bucket load on hourly rates but those roles are the first to be cut when there is a downturn.

But 40 is still bad if you'd rather be elsewhere and you're spending over half your time awake commuting and doing something you hate.
If you have a seat on public transport then you can sleep or read or listen to music or zone out. 30 minutes is probably the ideal length if possible.
Damn, my parents only had 10 min commutes back in the day and they complained about it. It did mean they spent more time at work I guess.

Remote work (if i could find it), I could probably handle better.
A lot more jobs have flex between office and home now.

I think my real problem is that there's no reason offices have to be such harsh and bleak places. But management would fight me every step of the way if I tried to make things more pleasant. Just little things, like lamps with shades instead of overly-bright overhead LED tube lights (to replace fluorescents).
Depends on the office really. Ours has different lighting zones and break out rooms with different lighting levels. Its mostly open office though which has its own issues.
The staff that have hot desks seem to be happier than the ones with designated desks... I guess because you can move to the best location available at any time?

I think I might have some autistic sensory overload thing going on. Another thing is, sometimes I just want quiet. Coworkers would want to play music all day every day.
Its not will power or anything, its more routine and habit. When you get into the habit and routine then it works. The trick is finding the way that helps you create constructive routines.
