So I remember asking this a few years back, but then I got busy with life and stuff and forgot. I want to do some doujin translation in my spare time, but I'm not sure what is the best approach to my situation.

I think I would be a freelancer (not sure if the right term), because I want to be able to pick out the works to translate myself. However, I am not able to clean or typeset, only the translation. I don't want to pay for any typesetting, nor do I want to be payed for my translation. I'm fine just to be credited on the credit page.

I initially thought to use the bounty system, but I didn't quite understand it, and moreover, it feels like a bounty for hiring translators anyways.

I also thought about just posting the translation online once I'm done, then whoever wants to typeset it can do so.

What is the typical approach people take to just translating works, but not cleaning and typesetting?

Forgive me if anything I mentioned goes against scanlation ettiques, I am not very familiar with the scene.

You can ask Red of EHCOVE to join the EHCove and just work as a translator, from there he'd prop up the scripts for any hungry editors to jump onto. You can at least ask him if it's fine for you to pick and choose the things you want to do. Otherwise if you want to work fully solo, then just do your scripts and toss them up in the air for editors to use and upload so they can acquire all the GP generated from the upload.

Thanks for the reply. I took a look at EHCOVE's FAQ page, and I've noticed they require Japanese translators with no rewrites. I didn't originally plan to translate from Japanese since I don't have the skills for it, but instead translate from the translation of another language. Is this not allowed in scanlation?

If not, is it also not allowed to be done even if I take the solo route as you suggested? I don't mind not claiming the GP for uploading since I don't use the forum very often, but I would still like to be credited. Would this be possible to enforce if I just upload the translation openly?

This is the typical approach if you only want to translate, but there is no guarantee you will get credited as the translator. You just need a place to dump your completed scripts and tell people they exist, such as a thread in "Cove of Scanslators" or a Discord.

You can, for example, do translations based on translations, if that is what you mean (e.g JP (raw)->EN (TL, other translator)->CN (TL, you).) But translating from a second-hand source and not the raw may result in a loss of accuracy and meaning, to the point that your re-translation enters rough translation territory.
Still, the worst that will happen is that some people despise you online and post angry comments. How much you care about this depends on you. Even machine translations are accepted on E-H for now.

I see. Do such threads exist already on the forum? Or is there a dedicated discord server to that (if so can I have the name please).

I will likely be using JP -> CN -> EN Translation since there are lots more vacancies in the EN side compared to CN, but you are right, it may become a rough translation since I can only somewhat read Japanese.

Not getting credit would suck if it happenes. If that does become the case, will anyone else be able to reupload with credit, or is there some rule that a scanlation can only be uploaded once and no modification are allowed to be made to it?

The best thing to do is make your own thread and/or Discord server. That way you can organize it any way you want as the OP/admin.

Again, you can request to be credited, but there is no guarantee it will happen.

I believe you can petition for a gallery to be renamed to include you as the translator.

I am unsure if you can download a gallery someone else has edited with your script and re-upload it with your added translator credits page. Technically, a translator has uploader priority over an editor on E-H. I don't think it's a nice thing to do, but being nice is not in the rules.
