QUOTE(Shank @ Dec 19 2023, 02:14) *

Would be harder to filter it by format if you do that. For example, someone might not want ai imageset, but might be specifically looking for an ai game cg, or not mind ai comics. What benefit would there be to it being a main category instead of a sub category?

What benefit would there be to the opposite? I am not opposing the creation of subcategories for AI-generated content, simply saying that the top-level descriptor should be AI-generated.

So the structure would be:

AI-generated
- Doujins
- Picsets
- CG

Not:

Doujins
- Man-made
- AI-generated
Picsets
- Man-made
- AI-generated
CG
- Man-made
- AI-generated

etc.

Either way the ability to search for each subcategory remains the same. The only difference is in the structure of the categorization and the ability to outright dismiss all AI-generated trash with ease without having to block each subcategory individually.

So you want to swap the X and Y axis of this grid for everyone just make it slightly easier to manually filter it out every single time you search instead of just blacklisting tags you consider to be thrash entirely once and be done with it?

There is really only "one" beneficial aspect to creating an AI main category, as it creates a big button to toggle the content on the main screen. The benefit is, reducing slightly the amount of weekly posts telling us to ban AI Generated content and similarly, the amount of times we need to reference the tutorial on how to block tags.

But tbf we are going to get these posts anyway. And having an AI subcategory makes it so people who actually want to filter "some but not all" AI content can do so using a combination of categories+subcategories.

I'm not swapping anything. AI-generated content was not a thing to take into consideration when the current system was designed, and now that it is being revised with AI content in mind, it is definitely my opinion that "AI-generated" is a much more significant distinguisher than what style of content the AI was trying to mimic.

Just what the categories are there to do. That's why there is category for "Western" or "Misc" or "Cosplay". What the Western artists are drawing, or what the person is cosplaying is then further signified through other tags undernearth that main tag. Being AI-generated is at least as significant if not more significant than whether the artist is "Western" but somehow that is a sensible way to categorize works and this isn't?

Well another advantage is that it just makes more sense thematically and structurally when compared to the other existing categories. I'm not only thinking of the situation right now, I'm also looking down the road where this AI-generated soot is bound to infest more and more of the intrernet. Keeping it as a sub-tag is at best a short term measure.

Also as a more practicular consideration right now, I believe that making it a main tag that NEEDS to be filled out when uploading would lessen the amount of incorrectly tagged AI content. As someone with o:AI generated in their blacklist I'm fully aware how common that is and I doubt it's going to get any less common with time and the advancement and profileration of these programs.

QUOTE(Tenboro @ Nov 20 2023, 03:35) *
We could consider adding new categories for Novels and possibly also Artbooks, though I'm not really sure if the latter is sufficiently different from Artist CG to deserve its own category?
Doesn't Artist CG imply that it is digital art? - Would amending the criteria for "Artist CG" on the wiki to allow for art book-type content be a preferred option? - Or renaming "Artist CG" to "Artist CG/Book" or something like that?
Worth noting that some eroge have more than one artist associated with them, and in that case I'd think they'd need to go in "image set" or something like that.
(Or why not just allow them under "Game CG?"- main point being, I think the definitions need refining.)

These books/eroge manuals for the PC-9800 series largely pre-date computer art in print, and are likely originally in graphite or watercolor or some other physical medium, rather than "CG."

I have manuals that I've scanned and been holding off on uploading because I know they'll get pushed into misc. - despite being decent quality eastern art - because they also qualify as "game manuals" and no exceptions are made in the criteria for game manuals. And they deserve better than the Misc. treatment.
[postimg.cc] sample page. Also got some C's Ware stuff.

QUOTE(Cipher-kun @ Nov 20 2023, 11:08) *
As it is due to some rule changes published art books should end up in the image set category due to the lack of narrative. However most people (citation needed) do not like this. A category for this kind of content could fix this issue.
Hey, at least those aren't ending up in misc...-but I agree, they deserve better too.

QUOTE(Basara Nekki @ Nov 20 2023, 09:18) *
I think it would be better to create a category for the entire "official publication" (only Non-H). This would gather in the same category magazines (anime, game, tokusatsu, hobby), books, novels, artbooks, game manuals, pamphlets (distributed in theaters or in large events), booklets (CD, DVD, BD scans), calendars, product catalogs (for example, toys), produced by Japanese publishers.

Currently these galleries are spread mainly in Non-H, Image Set and Misc.
I like this idea.

Bottom line: I think the game manuals definition needs to have an exception for stuff of eastern origin containing unique art (especially of an erotic nature), or else be considered a kind of art book. Clumping them with instruction booklets for games like Kirby's Adventure or whatever feels wrong.

I am in favor of the other proposed revisions in the original post.

QUOTE(kotitonttu @ Dec 18 2023, 18:45) *
AI should be its own top-level category.
I don't like that, simply because it legitimizes AI art further. But I don't really have an alternative suggestion to counter with.

3D and Western are currently subcategories in the new system, like AI.
Making AI a main category also means scrapping all the current plans for Western and 3D, making them main categories and each of them having sub categories for "gamecg/artistcg/imagesets/comics". This is in addition to those sub categories also being main categories for "native" content.

To visualize you now have
QUOTE
Doujinshi
Manga
Non-H
Cosplay
Game CG
Artist CG
Image Set
(Game CG/Artist CG/Imageset/Comics) Western
(Game CG/Artist CG/Imageset/Comics) AI
(Game CG/Artist CG/Imageset/Comics) 3D
Misc

instead of

QUOTE
Doujinshi
Manga
Non-H
Cosplay
(Western/3D/AI/<blank>) Game CG
(Western/3D/AI/<blank>) Artist CG
(Western/3D/AI/<blank>) Image Set
(Western/3D/AI) Comics
Misc

its essentially just swapping main categories with sub categories, creating more in total.
The main benefit being you can now disable AI more easily. Or you just disable the AI subcategories in settings, just like how you can disable categories by default now, with the added benefit of having less main/sub categories in total.

they are supposed to go into misc right now, and the amount of AI generated galleries that get reclassed from doujinshi category is still incredibly high.

Interesting that you took a Japanese game designed by Japanese artists as an example for what should be staying in misc, could you provide a more objective definition of "unique art"? Or is "I'm pretty sure I saw a nipple in there" actually the only criteria relevant here?

One recurring thing I've noticed whenever the category for Artbooks comes up is "everything outside of Doujinshi/manga(/artistCG and/or non-h made by artists of Asian or unknown nationality depending on the person) is garbage, therefore the definition of those good categories has to be warped to cram in any exception to that mentality I encounter" which is maybe not the most objective or logical way of going about it.

I'm well aware of that. Personally I'm a big fan of the Misc. category, as the catch-all "final frontier" category where works too outlandish or too creative to neatly fit into other categories get filed under. To me, the main advantage of the Misc. category is its surprising and creative nature, and filling it with 9000 near-identical AI-generated image sets could not be further from the main draw behind other, man-made content that gets filed under "Misc."

Like I alluded to earlier, in my opinion filtering out o:AI generated is a short-term solution to "fix" this dilemma, thought on the spot once easy AI image generation became available to the masses. But it is at most a quickly thrown together solution devised when AI-generated content first started filling up the Misc. category. It was not a bad first reaction, but I also don't feel like it's a good long-term solution. Currently there is no required "AI" tag to upload a gallery, so an AI-generated Misc. gallery is not incorrectly uploaded, it is simply lacking clarification. It's my wish that it would be incorrect, and the correct way to upload AI content would be in its own AI category.

I have no intention of legitimizing AI "art". If it were up to me, I would ban all of it outright. However, I recognize that this website is not tailor-made to fit my personal tastes, so I would gladly settle for a solution that bars it behind an ironclad top-level categorization, rather than infesting each category little by little.

This is a futanari game. So more than just nipple. And unique as in "not in any other printed or digital work, but still nevertheless H art from an artist that doesn't fall in another category due to its appearance in a game manual."

QUOTE(Glovelove. @ Dec 20 2023, 11:23) *

Unique as in "not featured in any other printed media, and of eastern origin."

The example I have above is from artist:"makita aoi", who also has been doing doujinshi for 20+ years. And has done doujinshi featuring these same characters, but not with the exact same artwork.

The best way to swing it to try to keep it out of "misc." under existing category definitions would have land in "manga" (clearly wrong, but this was sold in shops, presumably, and was published officially) or "Artist CG" even though it's not CG.

Yeah, I know that wasn't your intent. Just loudly complaining about something I don't know how to fix. I just don't want people to be encouraged to dump their AI shit here by seeing that the site has a special dumping ground for it (and thinking that means that we welcome their garbage clogging the site's arteries).

I want to question whether it makes sense to separate western / 3d / AI content into both Artist CG and Game CG. I understand why this was done initially for asian content, giving us the current Artist CG and Game CG categories.

My main concerns are:
  • Game CG content would be much less prevalent in western / 3d / AI than it is in drawn asian content (this is based solely on my experience, I don't have any data to back it up)
  • Game CGs cannot always be identified by gallery content alone, you have to rely on external resources (or on title / uploader comment). The images will look like either imagesets or artist CGs unless images containing only sprites, backgrounds or game interface elements are included.
The alternative would be to have those galleries receive a tag. I'm not convinced this is the better solution, I just want to put the concern out.

Some examples so you can see for yourselves:
western:
https://e-hentai.org/g/1166771/173520a9fc/ - pretty "typical" game CG gallery with backgrounds and character pics as well
https://e-hentai.org/g/1484260/0995a69e1e/ - if not for the title and cover this might well be "[PIXIV] no background art collection #42"
https://e-hentai.org/g/1083298/f6c7ae5abc/

3d:
https://e-hentai.org/g/2307523/1fc085739d/ - only indication that this may be a game CG is the title, otherwise it looks like any other 3d CG
https://e-hentai.org/g/1716085/6081686a90/ - same as above
https://e-hentai.org/g/1415176/62a7883394/ - same as above
(I honstely don't know if these actually are game CGs)

ai:
https://e-hentai.org/g/2400891/0a315c0acd/ - looks like any other AI image dump except for the characters / backgrounds at the end
https://e-hentai.org/g/2688284/5c619bea73/ - the interface makes it pretty evident here (but it's actually non-h I guess)

To contrast, here's the work dump of a 3d artist that looks deceiptevily like a game CG (the same uploader has many galleries like this):
https://e-hentai.org/g/2776476/5807c8dc41/

I support separating western / 3d / AI content into both Artist CG and Game CG

Re AI translated: it's difficult to impossible to reliably determine when a translation was done by AI vs someone who just doesn't translate well - especially when you consider translations of translations etc.

My feedback as an ignorant and stubborn user who configured their settings over a decade ago and can't really remember everything I did nor why: My primary concern is how these changes would affect the "Front Page / Search Settings" and related UX.
Currently the categories are displayed as follows inside the 732x132 searchbox:
CODE
[ Doujinshi ] [   Manga   ] [ Artist CG ] [   Game CG  ] [ Western ]
[   Non-H   ] [ Image Set ] [  Cosplay  ] [ Asian Porn ] [   Misc  ]

By default I have only Doujinshi and Manga shown. When I'm using a few tags to search I will rarely toggle on Artist CG and/or Game CG and/or Image Set by clicking their buttons. I probably won't toggle on Western unless I'm looking for something very specific.

I don't want to see this searchbox blow up in complexity. This might be a hard ask with the sub-categories proposed.
I think I saw somebody mention that the buttons could toggle through their list. For example, the Game CG button could cycle through Off, All Sub-categories, Native, Western, 3D, AI. But then what if someone wanted everything Game CG except for one or two sub-categories? It'd get too crazy to cycle through the factorial combinations. Perhaps cycling through Off, All, Native, Western, 3D, AI, !Native, !Western, !3D, !AI would be enough.

If that looks like the way things are heading... I think we might need the settings page to have a 2-dimensional config for the default state of the buttons and also a 2-dimensional config for excluding sub-categories (and their button states from the cycle list). And then maybe also have another button state that does all sub-categories including your excluded categories.
So if you excluded Game CG - AI your button state cycle for Game CG would be like Off, On, Native, Western, 3D, !Native, !Western, !3D, ALL. That would allow you to limit the cycle-able states to your preference, but also let you see everything without needing to temporarily change your settings.

Ultimately, I like the simplicity of the category buttons, normally want to avoid western stuff, almost always want to avoid AI stuff, but would like the ability to see western stuff (or maybe even AI stuff) without needing to fiddle with my settings.
Trying to put my thoughts into words drained my brain, and I'm probably rambling, so take everything I've said with a grain of salt.

I don't see why this 10-option layout could not be retained and have the matrix in the post above as an "advanced setting". Best not to assume the UX is going to be compromised in favor of function.

Hi. I'm just here to say that, as a consumer of AI generated content, I would like style tags like 'realistic' or '2d' or '2.5d' or '3d'.

Side note about why I like AI generated content: one of my reasons is some galleries are quite high-quality and have plenty of less-popular characters.

We do not have any plans on introducing any tags to filter AI content specifically. If you want to suggest something more broadly applicable that has not already been suggested, read here: https://forums.e-hentai.org/index.php?showtopic=174444
